Their exec stated just 2 days ago in an interview, that they will hasten the production introductions (i.e. shorten the cycle) in the very top-high end models, esp. int EU, where the market is as of yet not saturated. BTW, good luck selling $900USD (750€) and more expensive phones to Europe, which is mostly in recession and has been for the past 4 years.
But yes, Xiaomi is on a roll, but not the giant killer yet.
Also, they do _very little_ in house. Oppo on the other hand has actually some pure 1st class engineering. Xiaomi is just brand management and integration from off-the-shelf components.
In this regard companies with in-house chip design (LG, Samsung, Apple, Huawei) and with semi-fab-muscles (Samsung, LG) still have an upper hand in economies of scale - for now.
But you are right, slowly but surely Xiaomi will conquer more and more of the mid-end, high-end and finally the very top-end.
That's going to squeeze everybody's profit margins in the end, incl. Apple's.

If they shipped their stuff globally, no sane person would buy an overpriced Samsung phone. Anyways, I think the Mi 5 will be my next phone. No, it doesn't. Xiaomi doesn't have the same brand power as Apple does globally but it can get there and when it does, that's when Apple might take a look at their pricing. For now, this won't be a concern for Apple and its shareholders.

I think I'd actually prefer the lower clocked 820. A few websites are already commenting on the G5/S7 getting rather warm from intense usage... perhaps a slightly lower clocked version would actually end up being a better option.
But the lower clocks probably won't help. The lower clocked SD820 processors are extremely likely just more leaky individuals that are clocked lower to keep TDP in check. The higher clocked ones are better individuals with less leakage, and as such can be clocked higher. It's the same thing with desktop processors, the best ones are sold with higher clocks and those that aren't so good are clocked lower and sold at a cheaper price.
I have to say China branded phones have improved leaps and bounds in creating a really premium phone. There is no wonder no matter how hard Samsung tries, its just not able to compete, especially after factoring in the price. Samsung Edge is still better looking, but for the difference in price, I am happy just settling for a Mi5.

I just bought a Huawei Mate 8, but I'm considering returning it and have 2 questions about this device: 1) Anyone know around what dates we'll be able to buy one shipped from China? 2) Do you think the 820 will hold an efficiency advantage large enough to compare to the Mate 8 in battery life, despite the smaller battery?
I doubt this phone will end up $354 for the pro model without something giving. Like it steals your bank info.

The Nexus 4 was a subsidized flagship and even with the LTE modem at $300 it seemed reasonable given it cut some corners. Unless this breaks after 5 uses I just don't see it happening.
Just read Xiaomi phones ship without Google Play store and you can have issues installing it. Is that true for this one as well? Would be a no-go for me due do need of Apps only relevant locally where I live and sure nt availabel on Mi Store.
Google Play store missing for retail sets purchased from China, but easily installed afterwards (1 apk file). Retail sets sold elsewhere (e.g. Singapore, Malaysia, etc.) have international ROM, with Google play store (and other Google apps) pre-installed
Xiaomi phones has China ROM, and Global Rom. The Global Rom has Google Play Pre-Installed and No Chinese Apps. The Rom you can download it directly from en.miui.com After downloaded, and pick manually using updater, it will automatically update the rom with Google Play. If the Global Rom not available yet, like Redmi Note 3, you have to manually install the Google Play every the rom update, which is painful. Wait for the Global Rom before you buying it

It looks (intriguingly) like the binning that Intel have done for ages, which I don't think QC have really done so much of before now?If its that then the two versions will have the same overall TDP despite the clock speed differences.
Could conceivably also be a difference in the cooling in the high(er) end models letting them clock the same chips higher.

@adriangbMore importantly, check the network frequency bands supported by Mi 5.
For instance, it doesn't support one of the major frequencies in Europe and likely never will.
So once you are in the network coverage area of that frequency band, you are out of reception.
This is a phone for China and Asia, not for US and Europe.
