  • muppet_boy - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

    What about EU/US LTE bands?
  • andrewaggb - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

also CA LTE Bands. Phone sounds great. Can we assume that because it's a snapdragon 820 it has full LTE support in north america?
  • shabby - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

3g is all you're going to get in north america.
Don't understand why xiaomi phones are being covered by so many us/uk sites when the phone is for china only, unless you want to import them and be stuck at 3g?
  • akmittal - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

What time they will be launching this in India
  • sudipt123 - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

As per ususal practice- Atleast after 3 to 4 months
  • fatso485 - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

specs very comparable to G5/S7 for $262(32gb)-$345(128GB). very very impressed

he didn't talk about the resolution so its probably "only" 1080P. doubt any sane person cares about that
  • fatso485 - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

The Koreans are in deep trouble.

at this price& availability, even the oneplus 3 is not gonna impress
  • halcyon - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

    @fatso485
    >The Koreans are in deep trouble.

Yes they are, rightly so. And Apple as well.

    However, not yet.

Xiaomi sold 70M phones last year. Samsung over 320M.

Xiaomi is both manufacturing AND channel constrained. Also, outside Asia and some larger Asian markets, their brand is next to non-existent.

Samsung is just playing the waiting game, trying to milk the high-end for what it's worth, as long as the run continues.

Their exec stated just 2 days ago in an interview, that they will hasten the production introductions (i.e. shorten the cycle) in the very top-high end models, esp. int EU, where the market is as of yet not saturated. BTW, good luck selling $900USD (750€) and more expensive phones to Europe, which is mostly in recession and has been for the past 4 years.

But yes, Xiaomi is on a roll, but not the giant killer yet.

Also, they do _very little_ in house. Oppo on the other hand has actually some pure 1st class engineering. Xiaomi is just brand management and integration from off-the-shelf components.

In this regard companies with in-house chip design (LG, Samsung, Apple, Huawei) and with semi-fab-muscles (Samsung, LG) still have an upper hand in economies of scale - for now.

But you are right, slowly but surely Xiaomi will conquer more and more of the mid-end, high-end and finally the very top-end.

That's going to squeeze everybody's profit margins in the end, incl. Apple's.
  • nathanddrews - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

That's a great price, lots of greatness stuffed into that chassis. I would be in line for one if it used OLED. That's my deal breaker. Maybe the G8.

PS, how do you pronounce "Xiaomi"? Nevermind.

Koreans should definitely be scared. I just wish Xiaomi would sell their stuff in more markets. The Xiaomi mi.com store doesn't seem to sell any phones to Europe/USA. Just some accessories. If they shipped their stuff globally, no sane person would buy an overpriced Samsung phone.
Anyways, I think the Mi 5 will be my next phone. Just got to source it from somewhere else unless Xiaomi expands their markets.
  • Kepe - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

Although, it would be odd that they hold an unveiling event in Europe and then won't sell the phone there. So let's really hope they open up their store to European and American customers.
  • Speedfriend - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

This is 1/3 the price of an iPhone???? This is what should scare the hell out of any Apple shareholder, because over time all the marginal users will migrate to phones like this.
  • SaolDan - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

No they wont. Apple sheep are blind and dumb.
  • nathanddrews - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

They aren't blind or dumb, they just want a quality device that "just works", protects their right to privacy, built by people that make $15/hr minimum wage, and doesn't hurt the environment. Feels so good to be part of such a powerful social movement!

    *cough*

In seriousness, most of my Apple-owning friends and family don't expect a lot from their devices, don't know what an SOC is, but their devices work great for what they want to do - facetime, take pictures, videos, and listen to music. At this point, they're so entrenched in itunes that there is no turning back. They all complain to me when iOS keeps them from doing something Apple doesn't like, but Apple makes great phones, I just don't want one.
  • Flunk - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

Apple devices are built in the factory next-door to the Xiami factory anyway. Barely any difference anymore other than the pretentious "designed in California" written on the back.
  • nathanddrews - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

    Pretentious sells.
  • MikhailT - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

No, it doesn't. Xiaomi doesn't have the same brand power as Apple does globally but it can get there and when it does, that's when Apple might take a look at their pricing. For now, this won't be a concern for Apple and its shareholders.

It should scare Samsung shareholders and other companies that targets the same market as Xiaomi.
  • macs - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

That would be amazing with Aosp android

What does it mean 1.8Ghz bin of the 820?
  • T1beriu - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

There's a version of S820 that has a lower frequency of 1.8 Ghz.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_binning
  • Qwertilot - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

It looks (intriguingly) like the binning that Intel have done for ages, which I don't think QC have really done so much of before now?

If its that then the two versions will have the same overall TDP despite the clock speed differences.

Could conceivably also be a difference in the cooling in the high(er) end models letting them clock the same chips higher.
  • shadarlo - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I think I'd actually prefer the lower clocked 820. A few websites are already commenting on the G5/S7 getting rather warm from intense usage... perhaps a slightly lower clocked version would actually end up being a better option.
  • Kepe - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

But the lower clocks probably won't help. The lower clocked SD820 processors are extremely likely just more leaky individuals that are clocked lower to keep TDP in check. The higher clocked ones are better individuals with less leakage, and as such can be clocked higher. It's the same thing with desktop processors, the best ones are sold with higher clocks and those that aren't so good are clocked lower and sold at a cheaper price.
  • zodiacfml - Friday, February 26, 2016 - link

Right unless the lower frequency bin is much more expensive.
  • zodiacfml - Friday, February 26, 2016 - link

I meant, you are right. :)
  • doggface - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

So that's what a phone would cost without 40% markup and nit having to pay for patent costs.
  • watzupken - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I have to say China branded phones have improved leaps and bounds in creating a really premium phone. There is no wonder no matter how hard Samsung tries, its just not able to compete, especially after factoring in the price. Samsung Edge is still better looking, but for the difference in price, I am happy just settling for a Mi5.
  • zeeBomb - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

    Great keynote
  • zeeBomb - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

Nice specs...just don't like the fact the standard had lower memory speeds and underclocked CPU. I suspect the IMX298 will perform similarly to the 6s.
  • adriangb - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I just bought a Huawei Mate 8, but I'm considering returning it and have 2 questions about this device:
    1) Anyone know around what dates we'll be able to buy one shipped from China?
    2) Do you think the 820 will hold an efficiency advantage large enough to compare to the Mate 8 in battery life, despite the smaller battery?
  • halcyon - Thursday, February 25, 2016 - link

    @adriangb

More importantly, check the network frequency bands supported by Mi 5.

For instance, it doesn't support one of the major frequencies in Europe and likely never will.

So once you are in the network coverage area of that frequency band, you are out of reception.

This is a phone for China and Asia, not for US and Europe.
  • adityarjun - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

Fun fact, in their price comparison slide, they have put the battery capacity of iPhone as 171mH or am I reading it wrong?
  • 0iron - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

It's a typo that shouldn't happen at this kind of level. Correct capacity is 1715mAh
  • Space Jam - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I doubt this phone will end up $354 for the pro model without something giving. Like it steals your bank info.

Good display, high end SoC and camera, next generation LTE support, curved edges, high end storage, etc...

The Nexus 4 was a subsidized flagship and even with the LTE modem at $300 it seemed reasonable given it cut some corners. Unless this breaks after 5 uses I just don't see it happening.
  • halcyon - Thursday, February 25, 2016 - link

    @Space Jam

NSA already steals all your information. AT least with an open source phone, with an unlockable bootloader, you can change your ROM to more secure.

Besides, why would the world's fastest growing mobile phone company with 20 Billion in revenue, need to steal your bank info?

Really, your China-paranoia is ridiculous. All Apple iPhones get built in (non-Apple) factories in China too.

How are they any more secure? GCHQ revealed already in 2013 (from Snowden leaks) that all iPhones can be hacked/read in 10 seconds....
  • beginner99 - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

Just read Xiaomi phones ship without Google Play store and you can have issues installing it. Is that true for this one as well? Would be a no-go for me due do need of Apps only relevant locally where I live and sure nt availabel on Mi Store.
  • evozero - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

Google Play store missing for retail sets purchased from China, but easily installed afterwards (1 apk file). Retail sets sold elsewhere (e.g. Singapore, Malaysia, etc.) have international ROM, with Google play store (and other Google apps) pre-installed
  • realbabilu - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

Xiaomi phones has China ROM, and Global Rom. The Global Rom has Google Play Pre-Installed and No Chinese Apps. The Rom you can download it directly from en.miui.com
After downloaded, and pick manually using updater, it will automatically update the rom with Google Play.
If the Global Rom not available yet, like Redmi Note 3, you have to manually install the Google Play every the rom update, which is painful. Wait for the Global Rom before you buying it
  • beginner99 - Thursday, February 25, 2016 - link

thanks for the info. Hope it will actually be available for a good price here. Just saw the Mi 4 is selling for $550 here so at that price I can just as well choose a similar LG, Samsung,...
