I believe the Liquid/Kingston product is compatible with any M.2 SSD, and the Phison collaboration just involves the actual M.2 modules.

Probably, but if the card isn't ever sold without Phison drives then it doesn't make much difference. And the relationship between the three companies is pretty close: Kingston is a shareholder of Phison, and both Kingston and Phison are major investors in Liqid.

Actually, it is intended to be sold with M.2 from any manufacturer. There is no logic on the Liqid board itself that is from Phison.

Would be nice to have an affordable 2Tb SSD.

Hope drives with the E7 hit 50 cents per GB this year.Even that would be rather high compared to SATA drives but the pricing would become more tempting for a wider audience.

NVMe's advantages in a typical consumer setup will remain limited until NVMe controllers improve on 4k random reads.

The 950Pro are nice, but just too expensive. I was going to get one and have an old 830 128GB to hold me over in my Skylake build, but i found my 830 to be fast enough where i can wait for the price to drop or for the 960 Pro.
