You're confusing software audio codec with actual audio hardware codecs which are meant to be silicon audio SoC ICs - I know the terminology is conflicting and confusing but I'm not the one to blame here.
True that components are put into audio software codecs and other variant processing (eg Dolby, surround, effects etc. Discrete functions placed in hardware to speed up and reduce power drain. Aslso to improve audio quality (as in SNR ratio and 192bit processing). We need more of such chips since they do have different operational characteristics.
