unfortunately, still waiting for Cyanogenmod to get their Lollipop update out to users.

Can you save any settings since it is read-only memory?
  • A5 - Saturday, April 4, 2015 - link

ROM is just shorthand for "OS Image File". I believe the root of the term is from the very earliest smartphone devices where the OS area actually was read-only.
  • CaedenV - Saturday, April 4, 2015 - link

Way back in the day you would take your ISO or image file, and burn it to a DVD or CD ROM. This ISO that is ready for deployment was known as a ROM, and somehow that really stuck in the mobile industry even though they never really used disc based media to speak of for any kind of deployment.
  • zeusssk - Sunday, April 5, 2015 - link

    Lol.

Mobile devices have had EEPROM and NAND for storage since long before DVDs. Also, disks of an OS aren't called ROMs. Try asking a friend for "Windows ROM" or an "OSX ROM" and watch them humiliate you.

Getting a little off topic here but if making a simple mistake in nomenclature warrant an automatic humiliation from your friends, maybe it's time for you to find new friends...

Is this in any way related to the old Oxygen Rom made by AdamG?

  • _thalamus - Sunday, April 5, 2015 - link

Nope, not in the slightest - OnePlus just nicked the name, but judging by the size of their ROM download, the name Oxygen isn't correct - LeadOS would be more appropriate. :p

I didn't even realise that an XDA forum wiki existed for Oxygen...it was fun developing that...
  • loki1725 - Sunday, April 5, 2015 - link

Is there a review of the new OS planned?
  • ciparis - Sunday, April 5, 2015 - link

It's stock Android L, but it would be useful to hear how stable or buggy it is.
  • Bob Todd - Sunday, April 5, 2015 - link

I'm going to take a backup and install it today. As a long time Nexus user, I'm fine with stock, but I have a sneaking suspicion that future updates will come out quicker for OxygenOS than Cyanogen can manage. I guess we'll have a better idea when the 5.1 updates come out.
  • soccerballtux - Monday, April 6, 2015 - link

good. they were all a bunch of filthy sellout thieves who stole a bunch of contributed work meant instead for the benefit of everyone, not meant for the benefit of a few who had control of the name 'CM' anyhow.
  • Taristin - Sunday, April 5, 2015 - link

It's 5.0.2, but with some annoying quirks, like the inability to set a new home screen (or reset which screen the home button takes you to), or having to reboot the phone to get your widget window to update after several new apps are installed. Coming from CM11, those are a bit annoying to adjust to. As is that persistent search bar at the top of every screen. And the Google Now page that you cannot link to the home button long press, as it is in CM11.

Otherwise its a fast, nice rom that doesnt seem to have any major game stopping bugs (yet). (Ive only installed it this morning, so time will tell.)
  • Taristin - Monday, April 6, 2015 - link

As a follow up: Battery life is atrocious with this rom. What used to last all day now barely survives 8 hours of light usage. Think I'll be going back to CM as well.
  • Bob Todd - Monday, April 6, 2015 - link

Same situation with battery life here. On a side note, I like that they distributed this as a recovery flashable zip. I'll take another backup with OxygenOS on it so I can flip/flop between the two easily as updates come out.
  • Kristian Vättö - Monday, April 6, 2015 - link

I installed it a couple of days ago, but couldn't get any service (apparently this is a known bug). I went to CM12 nightly instead, which has been running fine for now.

One has to wonder: How does someone that buys a device like this, regardless of how cheap it is, deal with an experience that is so poor and inexcusable? Imagine something like this happening with regular companies, like Apple, Samsung, and so on.

A situation like this just sets in stone how amateurish One Plus and their products are. Certainly nothing more than toys for young men to play with. And that is strange, because smartphones are supposed to be personal objects that help you during the day, and never fail you.
  • Carstenihm - Monday, April 6, 2015 - link

Opo's working fine now. There's allways playfull needs around, what's the problem?
  • smorebuds - Monday, April 6, 2015 - link

Yeah, what are you referring to specifically by an "experience so poor and inexcusable"?

If you mean the whole CM/OnePlus split, then yeah it's a shame and unexpected, but CM11 will continue to be supported and updated for 2 years, as promised. OxygenOS seems ok (will be trying it soon) as a stock Android type of experience. And CM12 will be coming out eventually.
  • Bob Todd - Monday, April 6, 2015 - link

Yeah, other than a weak attempt at trolling with no specifics given, the current situation actually seems ideal for users in a way. You've got officially supported CM builds if you want the customization options, or what is very nearly stock if you prefer a 'Nexus like' experience. And either route should get you 2 years of updates so the software situation seems better in a lot of ways than most of the Android competition.
  • JimmiG - Tuesday, April 7, 2015 - link

The experience if you stick with the official OTA updates only is fine. This is "released" software, but there's a reason they aren't pushing them as OTA updates at the moment. If you want to experiment with the latest software, go through the hoops and manually flash the ROM. If you don't want to risk stability issues or data loss, don't do it.

If you don't do anything, you'll remain on CM11/KitKat for now, which is perfectly stable on this device. Once CM12 is ready (any day/week now), you'll get that update OTA.

I do agree that the split is a bit unfortunate, though. It does lead to confusion and there will never be a clear answer as to which is the "best" OS.

I think Cyanogen made a mistake going with Micromax over OnePlus. China is a more evolved and still rapidly growing market than India. OnePlus also has political connections to work around all the red-tape that will hold Micromax back from an otherwise dilapidated infrastructure where service (and electricity) constantly goes out, often days at a time. Long story short, China is the market Cyanogen wants to be in for rapid growth, not India.

And Micromax as a company has very unusual things in store for Cyanogen's distro...which includes notebook/mobile devices. I don't understand the purpose of running Android on a laptop, especially when Chrome OS is (like Android) free. Even Windows is free for distribution on phones and budget devices now.
  • Major_Kusanagi - Wednesday, April 15, 2015 - link

I just flashed my OPO to O2 and so far it's not that bad of a ROM, for being newly released and all. Sure there are some minor bugs but this is version 1 and that's to be expected.
