That jab at Apple wasn't really needed to make this product announcement a good read.
  • Sttm - Thursday, March 19, 2015 - link

I enjoyed it. It also has the same number of USB ports!
  • lilmoe - Thursday, March 19, 2015 - link

    lol +1

Companies make funny jokes about apple in a tasteful way. But Apple has a very long history of mentioning other companies in a very offensive, non-professional manner. If blackmagnum is offended, he needs to ask Apple to be a bit more humble during their keynotes.
  • Teetu - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

I agree, just this past week Tim Cook made several comments about Windows when talking about the Apple Watch. While the comments may be true, I thought it came out of left field and sounded very unprofessional. I would have expected that from Jobs but Cook has the same attitude.
  • Teetu - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

"The magic of Apple, from a product point of view, happens at this intersection of hardware, software, and services. It’s that intersection. Without collaboration, you get a Windows product. There’s a company that pumps out an operating system, another that does some hardware, and yet another that does something else."
  • kspirit - Saturday, March 21, 2015 - link

    Yikes. That's tacky.
  • sonicmerlin - Sunday, March 22, 2015 - link

No it's not. It's accurate. So was the Apple jab in this article. I had no idea the camera was so pathetic on the new Macbook.
  • PubFiction - Thursday, March 26, 2015 - link

Except its not surface pro is basically designed to work well with windows and show off its features. MS hardware products are often made to showcase what windows can do including mice and keyboards.
  • nikon133 - Monday, March 23, 2015 - link

Apple's solution sounds a bit... inbreed. No fresh genes from outside. Just saying...
  • Taneli - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

Also, this here has same amount of RAM as $699 iPhone 6
  • nikon133 - Monday, March 23, 2015 - link

    But less buttons! ;)
  • StormyParis - Thursday, March 19, 2015 - link

It *was* a bit deserved though :-p
  • Brett Howse - Thursday, March 19, 2015 - link

It wasn't a jab as much as a joke :) I'm sure the MacBook will have a much better camera despite them having the same resolution.
  • MadMan007 - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

But will the camera be $1229 better?!?!
  • GC2:CS - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

What about the other parts ? It's foolish to say that a Mac pro for example should have a "3000$ better" (whatever that means ?) camera, just because it costs more...
  • Flunk - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

Why? If the computer is $3000 more, everything should be better. That's a huge price delta, you can buy cheap laptops for $200, on that costs 15x as much should be much better in every way.
  • Refuge - Saturday, March 21, 2015 - link

What he meant was, that you shouldn't expect all extra $2,930 to go into the front facing camera...
  • Alexvrb - Sunday, March 22, 2015 - link

The sword cuts both ways. This $70 Lumia? Do you think the camera cost $70? Of course not. The budget for the camera on the Mac should have been substantially larger. Why is it acceptable for an expensive Mac to have such a lousy camera? Even a typical $600-range Ultrabook can be had with a decent full HD 1080p unit. SD -> HD -> Full HD.
  • Dorek - Thursday, March 26, 2015 - link

I highly doubt it. There's only so much you can do with a 640x480 camera.
  • close - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

Keep that in mind when you're enjoying jabs taken at Apple's competitors in various other articles. These go both ways and this one in particular isn't at all offensive, unlike most pro-Apple literature.
  • kspirit - Saturday, March 21, 2015 - link

That Apple jab gave me life :')

    Brett <3
  • Refuge - Saturday, March 21, 2015 - link

I had to read the entire thing twice to be sure I was looking at the right "Jab" before I commented...

Is that even really a jab? I mean jeese, all he did was make a comparison on cameras.

Have you ever read any of their case/keyboard/laptop reviews? They (sometimes) can be brutal.

Go find a corner and pout quietly I suppose...
  • clewis97 - Friday, April 17, 2015 - link

A jab? That was an apples to apples comparison with no opinion inserted. For my money, I have never preferred Apple products aside of the iPod and iPhone prior to 2012 when android began to work effectively and Windows phone 8 became available. Apple computers seem to me counter-intuitive, low end hardware, not upgrade-able, with a glitched OS. I prefer Microsoft services (one-drive, MSN services, Office etc...) and modular hardware any day of the week. Except for Garageband!!! I love Garageband. I have owned a Mac, IPad, IPhone, and simply do not prefer them. I never got it. My gadgets are not fashion accessories. Windows and Windows phone are intimately suited to the way I do business, and the way I live.; Windows phone is the simplest, most intuitive, best working phone OS I have ever used and I have used several iterations of each. Apps you say? I have never not been able to find a useful app in the store for the purposes that I need them. This applies only to me as personal choice is always recommended, but pushing apple products and services on people as the best option is simply ridiculous. It's not... It is an option (1 of 3 or 4 perfectly viable ones). I admire Apple as a tech innovator but any of their past or present eco-systems and hardware specs simply do not live up to the hype or my expectations. Still, it is better than Chrome\Android, but not on par with Windows and Intel in terms of software\hardware combo. Not even close to me. Just a thought.
  • althaz - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

THIS is the new 520. Looks pretty amazingly great for the price.
  • Michael Bay - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

Yes it is, especially considering how out of place 530 was with all Nokia cut without changing the price much.
I bought 435 for my mother, she`s happy with it.
  • Stanand - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

I mostly agree, but the Lumia 430's 2MP fixed focus camera makes me curse. Even without flash, I find the Lumia 520's 5MP auto focus camera (with Lumia Camera software) to be surprisingly useful.
  • blanarahul - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

    Things that are not necessary:
    a) Ambient Light Sensor: Never works properly on low end devices.
    b) 0.3 MP camera: Why is it even there?
    c) Back camera: IMHO Microsoft should innovate and put the 2 MP FF Camera on the front.
  • blanarahul - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

    d) They should make a camera-less quad A7 option/IPS display option.
  • hojnikb - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

at this pricepoint you're better off buying a second hand smartphone.
  • Calista - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

I tend to agree, but this phone will be sold in developing countries. You just won't be able to find the same surplus of old more expensive phones as in richer countries and thus new but inexpensive phones are needed over there.
  • Daniel Egger - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

For my taste they could even leave out the useless cameras. However I think one promised feature will still be amiss: battery run time. Funny enough I've never heard about anyone returning a phone or even suing the companies for false advertisement.
  • Michael Bay - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

That`s why they have this fine print stating that battery runtimes are counted with specific parameters.
From personal experience, my Lumia 730 can handle 4-5 days on one charge if I don`t use internet and play music sparingly. 435 will probably have a half or 3/4 of that.
  • MrSpadge - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

I like those new budget devices. They're budget for sure, but don't have those foul smelling compromises of the x25 / x30 series. The 430 and 535 make pretty much all other 4xx, 5xx and 6xx devices redundant.
  • jjj - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

70$ plus taxes is not ultra-cheap, half that is.
It's also not their cheapest Lumia actually, you can buy the 530 in most (if not all) markets for less than 70$+taxes. So don't just repeat their claims without checking if they are accurate.
  • Brett Howse - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

When the devices are launched, they are always a bit more money, and they drop over time. The Lumia 530 started its journey well over $100. This is the lowest price yet for the day one price. And it is before any subsidies.
  • GatesDA - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

They never said it was the cheapest Lumia, and $70 MSRP before subsidies certainly doesn't mean it'll cost $70 in all markets after subsidies.
  • Michael Bay - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

Where I live, right now 530 still costs more than 435. Granted, it`s like 5 to 10 dollars, but still.
  • cuex - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

In Indonesia, Android One phone is only Rp 699,000 (~ USD 54) yet it already packs MT6582M (Quad A7), 8GB ROM, 1GB RAM, 4.5" IPS LCD, 5 MPx Rear Camera, 2 MPx Front Camera, Android 5.1. It packs WAY MOARRRRR than this lousy lumia phone.
  • Michael Bay - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

It "packs" Android, which by itself is a dealbreaker.
  • sonicmerlin - Sunday, March 22, 2015 - link

    Probably lags and stutters though.
  • Alexvrb - Sunday, March 22, 2015 - link

I try not to support Mediatek. I don't want their junk creeping into mid-range devices. Keep it in disposable devices with poor build quality, like those sub-$50 tablets.
  • Michael Bay - Monday, March 23, 2015 - link

I`ve had a Mediatek SoC phone before moving on to WinPhone, and it was okay performance-wise and in battery times. True, GPS was bad, but that`s about it.
  • Furunomoe - Tuesday, March 24, 2015 - link

Where you can get an Android One phone for only Rp 699,000? The cheapest one I could find is the Rp 999,000 (~ US$77) Nexian Journey One, the other two models are even more expensive.

Granted, it is not a bad phone, I have one myself. Everything is pretty smooth considering the price and I don't feel disadvantaged when comparing the usability to higher-end phones.
  • Wolfpup - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

This sounds like an astonishingly good phone for the price! If AT&T picks it up it could well end up cheaper, because like the 635 that's supposedly $180 or whatever actually goes for $50 most of the time (and $100 before that).

I disagree with the comments regarding the 635. I've had multiple flagship phones and tablets, and on some of them auto-brightness doesn't really work at all (and on all of them I have to adjust it manually regardless sometimes), and it's super easy to adjust on the 635 regardless...the middle setting is normally fine for everything. And the proximity sensor is always flaky from my experience too, so not having one doesn't seem like much of a loss. On my iPhone 5s and others I'd often have to wait for the sensor to decide it wasn't near me anymore, sometimes hold it back up, put it back down, etc.

Anyway both features aren't really anything I miss on my 635.
  • Michael Bay - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

But there must be a proximity sensor on 635.
I`ll have to check 435, but I think it was there too.
  • Gunbuster - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

With the 635 dipping into the $30 range is the 430 going to to be $20 on sale? $15?
  • cheshirster - Thursday, May 7, 2015 - link

    +630

Brett Howse is just another theorist, that do not want to learn how really successful budget phones should be done.
  • Calista - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

Why oh why did they not add an LED flash? What could it possible cost, 50 cent? I bought the Lumia 520 when it was new to try out Windows Phone. And while I could live with the small screen, low ram, slow CPU and basic camera the single thing that made me sell it was the lack of any kind of flash.

It's quite simple - many of the countries this phone will be sold in are really poor. Poor countries have often bad lightning both inside and outdoors. As in a single naked light-bulb in a room. This makes a phone without a flash useless more often than not.

The only logical reason I can think of not to include a flash is to further segment the market. But that's being greedy, not a very charming quality.
  • whatsa - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

Honestly if that's what your house is like then get a dumb phone for $20 and use
the other $50 for a few things around the house (lights) and other things that benefit the whole
family. You don't really need a SP and a $100 mini laptop the whole family could use is a better investment.
  • Calista - Sunday, March 22, 2015 - link

Why do you assume I'm poor/living in a poor country? And besides, you never tried to refute my point. It's quite simple, a LED flash is a very inexpensive but at the same time very useful addition to a phone.
  • Murloc - Friday, March 20, 2015 - link

"the lack of a proximity sensor and ambient light sensor made it difficult to use in real life"

Lol seriously? I use it on medium and I can see everything even in the full sun, I never felt the need to change the setting although it's quite easy to do.
  • lithium451 - Saturday, March 21, 2015 - link

Finally, I've been waiting sooo long for a cheaper Windows phone. Thanks MS!
  • AlluringRaja - Saturday, March 21, 2015 - link

Am too happy Microsoft is listening voice of it's customers. Just hoping Microsoft releases Lumia 3** series with ₹3000-3999 price. Lumia 2** series with ₹2000-₹2999. If they decreases display (3 inch to 3.8 inch and fix ram below 1 Gb )but add flash to device. And support Telugu or local native language support in India. WP will definitely rise more irrespective of apps in store. Because more than half people don't know English but still they buy smartphones but if you support native regional languages it makes sense to people really think to buy phone to communicate. I myself is eagerly waiting to buy 2 smartphone to my parents. But due to lack of my native language. My mother who doesn't know English language is unable to use it for even calling. Every time I she needs someone's help.
  • marees - Tuesday, March 31, 2015 - link

buy Lava IRIS win1. only ₹4000 and quad-core, 1GB ram etc.
In all aspects that is a better phone than this.
  • Alexvrb - Sunday, March 22, 2015 - link

    I'm a little confused. You list it as having the MSM8212. But isn't the MSM8212 a quad-core?

This is one of the best smartphone by Microsoft as people are looking for the Windows smartphone but during Nokia the price was high and for low price you won't get front camera but Microsoft is providing everything that user wants.
Find the full specifications and price of this smartphone on www.smartphoneandprice.com and I was amazed to saw the price and then confirmed the price here its amazing.

Nice little phone but would have preferred to see a 3.2MP camera in there as I feel that's the minimum for a 'snaps' camera. That's about as much that's needed at this level.
  • Morg72 - Wednesday, March 25, 2015 - link

Just upgraded my Lumia 822 to a Galaxy S5... I prefer Windows Phone but there are no current upgrades from my old phone. I like the Windows Phone interface and how smooth it is to use, but with MS ignoring the upper-middle and high end, it really meant I go with a Galaxy or a downgrade. If MS wants to gain market share they need at least 1 current high end phone. The high end is what gets peoples attention and then the budget phones are what people that can't afford the high end settle for. I don't get this strategy of all low and mid-low range phones. It's a shame I was pretty much forced over to android for a phone upgrade.
  • cheshirster - Thursday, May 7, 2015 - link

"The Lumia 635 is a great example of this"
You should throw your dilettantish estimates out of the window and face the truth - 630/635 are the most popular WP devices in US and in the world too.
They now hold 20-30 percent of WP installed base in many countries, 35% in USA
Overall world sales are likely higher then Moto G, so it is one of the most selling budget phones too.
And they are the popular while not being the cheapest.
This is a big success, deal with it.
