Is there a way at last to make app windows remember their positions across open/close and reboots ? I'm on a dual-monitor setup with about 10 apps open, I'm tired of having to setup my desktop every time.
There's various third party solutions for this, MS has improved multiple display handling (the hard corners are nice), but there's still a lot of things apps like Display Fusion can do for you with 2+ displays.
Holding CTRL while clicking the red x to close the window is supposed to work, but I've found it hit-or-miss. I haven't tried it in a while so can't recall if it worked for placement in multiple monitors, but I believe it did. You can try it and see if it works for the programs you're trying to use it on, if not then 3rd party is the way to go.
The last build was so bad. So bad in fact that I bought a copy of 8.1 instead of waiting for 10. It is actually shocking how similar they have become since the first 10 builds came out.
Hmmm... interesting comment. I have Win 10 installed on my low-end spare desktop but never really used it as it was too buggy. (Others did not experience the magnitude of issues I did apparently). I will have to check out the new build.
honestly, for me its been as stable as my Win 7 install before that was... aside from the obviously incomplete settings and menus etc, I was actually shocked how well it runs. The only compatibility niggle was with my Kaspersky AV but after disabling the compatibility checking services I was able to install it and it works.

What mostly needs to be done is some tweaking of the Start Menu, some bug fixing and move over all the stuff from the control panel to the new settings app. That's really what's needed. Especially if they're smart and drop their stupid tradition of only doing feature additions or changes in major version every year, but they seem to be changing the way they do updates to something closer to the OS X \ iOS \ Android, more flexible.
argh this build broke my network (always says cable unplugged, and it seemingly tries to update the network driver when i downgrade it), and synergy seems to have stopped working with mouse on other computer (but works with keyboard), and it seems to darken the screen and not reboot.
Definitely faster and more fluid than previous builds (testing it on a Core 2 Duo). This build broke my Realtek High Dfinition sound drivers though, trying to fix stuff. Any similar encounters?
Yes my VIA HD Audio on my motherboard also is having issues. I had to change the audio from 2 channel to quadraphonic in order to restore sound. On the last build, I had to set it to 5.1 audio, so there's some known issues here. Give that a try.
Actually, mine doesn't want to load the driver at all. It says that the sound driver cannot be installed (using windows update). I'm trying older drivers atm.
Solved. There seems to be some changes in the audio driver stack in the latest build (actually starting from build 9926, the problem starts after Windows Update installs new Realtek drivers). A previous (known) bug in the Realtek driver resurfaces with the latest changes in Microsoft's code. Installing a driver directly (whether via Windows Update or from the OEM wont work and will cause a error.
For those having the same issue (which seems quite a few do), and if you have a red "x" mark on the audio icon in the task bar and/or your driver cannot install successfully, try the following:
- Device Manager -> High Definition Audio (right click) -> Update Driver Software - Select "Browse my computer for driver software" - Select "Let me pick from list of device drivers on my computer" - Select first option (or: High definition audio), and not any other from Realtek or Microsoft. - If it doesn't work, try others in the list.
This reverts the driver back to default Microsoft driver (pre-update), but you'll probably lose some advanced features provided by the chip (like surround and sub-woofer). It's a temporary work-around until Microsoft resolves the driver issue with Realtek/Intel.
Comodo does not work, I can see via dxdiag that it is indeed DX12 now, 3DMark11 & 13 crash every time I run them. Advanced Warfare takes a whole minute to join the level, and is bad when joined. MW3 doesn't run.
Furthermore, there is no 'basic' theme available now, you have to have some coloured theme now. Still no way to turn off non-essential apps running in the background, using up network connections etc.
The only thing that worked was the Star Storm demo, and it was terrible too - Mantel: AVG 20.33fps, DX12 6.72 fps.
Over the years what I've noticed is, when MS say Beta, they really mean it.
Games are probably not on top of their priority list right now. It was always better to wait out half a year before jumping to the next Win version if you were in it for games only.
GTX 580 here. Both games I currently play, one Civilization V and other... let's say MMO (under NDA)... both work just as well as they did with Win8.1 before - no problem found so far.
Oh.. I was checking the Windows Update window and glad Qualcomm Atheros and ELAN provided an updated driver for my bluetooth and track-pad. 1 month of agonizing experience is done hopefully..
Here's hoping Windows Update got an update... It's way to simplistic as is, barely any options, not even essential ones like selecting or hiding update. No idea what they're doing, the new Windows Update had more functionality in earlier builds.
I got build 10041 overnight, and I have no apps that I can see. Neither the "windows" button nor the start button does anything. Also, cannot type into the Cortana "ask me anything" field.
That Windows Update is very cool. I don't have to worry about Windows Updates in a school I work for with thousands of Windows devices. I would like to know about phasing out WimBoot as I am working on it as a new image on W8.1.
i hate how the shut down button is so high on the start menu. is there some way to move it back down to the proper place? ie lower setion of the start menu?
That THEME, Microsoft, THAT THEME. Are we ever gonna move on from Windows 95? Like, in this century at least? How about firing the ones responsible for such retarded theming and bringing some actual progress to the table theming-wise. I've not received the Spartan browser update and I don't know if the executable has the same name, but I get a bug where IE appears on the Task Bar twice, both referring to the same window, but the unpinned one is unresponsive.

The biggest 2 issues with Windows updates is that they are NOT rolled in to ISOs so that reinstalling is a BITCH! And the other is the computer won't install updates until you go to USE IT!
These two issues are HUGE! Easily solved, because Apple already has done this. Having devices sharing the update files is nice, but not nearly as important as the 2 issues I've mentioned.
As far as settings go, Microsoft really needs to spend the rest of the time fixing that cluster @#$% and drop the web browser thing entirely at this point. Only an idiot would use Internet Explorer or whatever they change the name too at this point, it's simply a downloader for a real web browser. I have heard nothing about Spartan that improves the user experience, only the same nonstandard BS Microsoft pulls in breaking industry standards with a reinvention of html to conform to what Microsoft want's, incompatibility.
Microsoft needs to start selling software that makes life better for the person USING the computer, not the companies selling computers, not the enterprise, but the end user. Internet Explorer used to be the one to use because Microsoft managed to get webpages optimized for IE in instead of the standard. But today there is no advantage to use IE, only significant downsides. It's only benefit is that it's the default that comes preinstalled, one of it's bigger issues.
My Mac installs updates in the middle of the night when I'm not using it. And when I sit down in the morning to where I was, in the app that I left open, I see the notification of the restart. In comparison Microsoft is at least 10 years behind, and apparently distracted solving no ones problems, unless you are an ISP burden with Microsoft update traffic. Maybe the Redmond campus pays their internet bill by the megabyte? Again, not making life better for the consumer by solving the big issues.
And if you only use your computer occasionally, this update BS is a huge deal. Because it means you have to wait for updates to finish often before the computer is even usable. Having to restart dozens of times after a fresh install because a software engineer at Microsoft is too lazy to roll the updates in to an ISO is simply unacceptable. And while they are at it, driver curation, do it and stop being lazy. There is no reason for Intel chipset drives to not be in install images once they have been on the market for 6 months. That's simply poor customer service.
Microsoft can't even bother to host the ISOs themselves!
And yes, reinstalling is a big deal because it is how many Windows problems are solved.

Wow, really? This isn't even out yet. The preview has only been for several months, even.
They should make sure the separate virtual desktop taskbars are the default, so this kind of thing doesn't bother everyone for years to come.
I'd like them to put that panel back in that lets you edit your wi-fi configurations, too.
