The people who comment in the DailyTech forum must be really tasting the sour grapes. I'm sure they're find some way of spinning this in an anti-Apple manner, though. (Actually, it will most likely be a post insulting people who buy Apple products.)
Say what? This is vindication. We've been saying for a long time that Steve Jobs was an idiot for claiming a single size phone was best for everyone, and that nobody was gonna buy a phablet. Jobs dies, Cook takes over, directly contradicts Jobs and introduces different size iPads, and now different size iPhones (including a phablet), and Apple has their best quarter ever. Completely validating what we said.
It's a phone, not a religion. Most of us don't care whose product you buy so long as it suits your needs. And a wider variety of choices (and competitors) always helps accomplish that. OTOH arbitrary and capricious limitations on choices like Jobs insisted on are bad for the customer. No, one size does not fit all. I say congratulations to Cook and co. for actually giving the market what they wanted, not what one man though the market wanted.
everyone said that crap man, lol you act like it was you guys. The market demanded a larger screen phones. But what about all the other arguments you guys made about the UI, OS, too expensive, to locked down, "android is awesome and cheap", more customization?
the market drives innovation, not dailytech forum people
No it doesn't because Apple had their up until that point best quarters back when they had a single size in 3.5" and 4" iPhones. And Steve Jobs never said that the 3.5" iPhone was the only size display hat Apple will ever sell. Note that both the 4.7" iPhones were lighter and had less volume than most 3.5" iPhones that came before. It was never about the screen size, but about the device size.
Are there any numbers floating around for sales of the iPhone 6 vs the 6+? I imagine competitors are particularly interested in that... Wouldn't be surprised if the 6+ is selling better.
I just hope it levels out or most manufacturers are gonna keep ignoring the smaller phone market or hobbling smaller models compared to the large flagship (which even Apple did to an extent).
I don't know of any independent reports, but Cook gave a vague comment that both sizes of the iPhone 6 series are dominant in certain markets. I assume the US is the iPhone 6 and China is the iPhone 6 Plus, but that's just speculation on my part.
Jebs NEVER said people need only one-size phone. He has argued that with one-hand use you can no go to big sizes. And it was true and still true, Jobs was and is right. However, since then Apple has invented double-tap-to-shift-half-of-the-screen-down feature, and has made the phone itself much thinner, so actual grip perimeter of iPhone 6 is not bigger than that of iPhone 4S.
I think people misunderstood Steve Jobs. The screen size issue was simply that Apple didn't have anything that was the size of competing product, so Steve says that his product was the perfect size. If he iPhone screen was 9", Steve would have figured a way to say that his company's screen size was perfect. There was no way in hell he was going to give credit to Android devices.
The guy was all about making the perception that his company had the best ideas and products available. If he was still alive, I think the same screen size creep would have occurred. Steve would have taken credit for it too.
Nerds generally have no social skills and sense of taste. That's why they hang out in DailyTech fawning over no-talented clowns like Google and Elon Musk, while angrily complaining about people with taste and real-world social skills.
They seriously think Google, instead of Apple, invented the modern smartphone. And they think Elon Musk somehow created anything but the most boring rockets in the world, completely ignoring all the amazing things NASA was already doing 40 years ago, like the Space Shuttle.
NEVER trust the advice of nerds when it comes to tech products. Always trust the person that's not a nerd.
They're salty that Anand is working at Apple, salty that iOS is still a tier 1 platform for developers while the gap in app quality has actually widened, salty that Android's share in the high end has plummeted, and salty that DT is no longer on the Anandtech sidebar.
How many idiots keep buying these overpriced iphones....
looks: no. all decent specced phones from multi vendor have decent looks, and all have options with cases to go wild on the desires... IOS: no, unless you are a 60+ old guy and have issues with GUI. while android is far open and requires a bit mor ehands on, MIUI for example is actually way better then IOS Store: If you want to pay for everything and limited apps go ahead specs: well they are very optimised that is for sure, but on a daily base no diff with any decent android battery: hell no, the only ones you see on charging desks are iphones. price: the last reason to buy one e-penis and show off: YES
I bought 2 IPad2 because at that time they were great, but long gone these days vs competition. My MI3 and now OnePlus One are way better phones then any released Iphone.
Say the guy who feels the need to validate his purchases on an online forum, by listing in what ways they are better than Apple’s offerings. Good job, there, chief.
Ahhh fanboys and haters with old grudges so far removed from the story no one can follow and some guy calling buyers idiots. I love articles about Apple.
Weelllllll, isn't that special? There you are just typing away at your typewriter, tapping those keys. Hmm??? So, who filled your head with those NASTY, nasty ideas? You typed the male member into your comment to show off to all your little friends.
Who might it be that gave you that idea? Could it be . . . SATAN!!!
Going back to 2007, there were rumors that apple was builing an i-pod/telephone. I was thinking an ugly phone with a big circle in the middle to select things, so i didn't buy the stock.... ;)
The iPhone was unveiled on January 9 in 2007. AAPL stock price didn't move at all during this time. It started its slow uptake in May. So you had plenty of opportunity to buy in once you saw that the iPhone was not a ghastly chimera. But you probably didn't believe anybody would buy a 600 dollar phone. Neither did Steve Ballmer. Nor did I.
Yep, no doubt about it...were it not for the cell-phone business, Apple would be history. I thought this comment from the article was funny:
"Right now, the iPhone is Apple. It accounts for 68.6% of the company’s revenue for this quarter, and iPhone revenue alone is about the same as Microsoft ($26.47B), Google ($16.52B), and Intel ($14.72B) combined."
None of the compared companies generate 70% of their revenues from selling cell-phones...;) (Samsung would have been a far more accurate comparison.) Surely, therefore, Apple & Microsoft do not directly compete (as > 70% of Microsoft's revenue comes from PC software & services), and of course Apple certainly doesn't compete with Intel *snicker*, and the Google correlation is just as off-base.
Hopefully, if and when Apple's cell-phone business hits 80%+ of its total revenues, traditional Mac fans will at last dispense with the myth that Apple & Microsoft are "direct competitors." They aren't. Should Microsoft's Windows phone business ever approach 70%+ of its total revenues then they'd certainly be direct competitors at that point. But until then people might as well think of Apple as just another cell-phone maker...yawn...because that is exactly what Apple has become.
Apple is also the most successful PC company. It captures the majority of premium PC (over $1000) sales and makes more money on its laptop business than competitors who beat it on (low-cost oriented) volume.
So companies only compete if they have largely comparable revenue structures. Uh-huh. Wicked definition you got going there.
Must be comforting for BlackBerry (formerly RIM) that they aren't really competing against Android since Google makes 90% of its money with online advertising... *rollseyes*
Anyone heard of the coal mine stores that operated back in the 1800's? When your limited to living in a restricted ecosystem, you have no options to buy products for outside stores as competitive prices. Apples raking in billions by selling the bulk of their phones to people who already own an older model IPhone. If you look at apples growth, it's not as impressive.
I give Apple major props for being able to make Billions by getting their collective incremental bits of what other phone makers have been providing for months, years.
At the end of the day. Buy what you want, but it's simply childish to think one person knows whats best for someone else, so drop the personal attacks for either owning an Apple product or some other companies. It just displays one's level of ignorance IMO.
"...what other phone makes have been providing for months, years."
Please point out the other phones on the market that have as secure and easy to use authentication system as TouchID.
While your at it, let us know when you find a hardware/software ecosystem with the same *quality* selection as iOS.
Oh, and I'd also like to be able to take it to any store and receive the highest level of in-store support in the industry, not a carrier store or a craptastic place like Best Buy.

Your points have already been debunked.78million phones .... good penetration in China (first time user, NOT previous apple users).
You don't make $18B in PROFIT selling to the same customers.
