I've got 8.1 + Denim installed on a Lumia 822. Lumia Camera is available with some of the performance improvements intact even on the older/lower-end hardware. It's like having the best of the old stock MS camera app (speed) and the previous iteration of Lumia Camera (quality/features) formerly known as Nokia Camera.
Sounds like some of the features will remain exclusive to stronger hardware, but any and all improvements are welcome. For the record, it already has a burst mode, though it could use some improvement.
I thought that the speed improvements didn't apply to older phones? Still waiting for Denim on my 925, but at this point the updates are purely OS, and not firmware. But I am still staying away from Preview for Developers.
If there are speed improvements in Denim, I am excited for it! Lumia camera is too slow to launch on Cyan.
Denim is a firmware update. Cyan firmware -> Denim firmware. It just so happens that Denim on Lumia devices is packaged alongside the latest version of the OS. Nokia typically does that for their major update releases, which I like.
Anyway, yes, Lumia Camera (formerly Nokia Camera) launches about as fast on Denim as the stock MS Camera app did on Black (Verizon skipped Cyan altogether, don't ask). Whereas when I tinkered with Nokia Camera before and found it was too slow to launch. It's now quite fast to start and take pics which is good because it has supplanted the old Camera app altogether as the stock camera app! Together with a dedicated shutter button it's really fantastic even on this old hardware.
I really wish HTC has a dedicated shutter button on the M8.
that's great the amount of money they are investing to improve the camera is great, although there are many camera apps on the market which does a greate job, i would recommned beauty plus camera app http://beautyplus.website for android & ios, this has been my favorite every since it came out
Awesome news. I look forward to the new Lumia Camera update. Even with a quad-core Snapdragon 400 (1.2 Ghz), my low-end Lumia 635's Lumia Camera start up duration is quite unbearable. I more often switch to the default camera app for quick snaps.
I refused to use Lumia Camera prior to Denim. As I said it's now the best of both worlds.
I like that they're pushing even more awesome features for newer faster hardware. When I nab a new device I'm going to get one that supports all the goodies.
"And just because people want to know, no, there was no discussion yet of a Lumia 1020 update."
You'd hope so. The 1020, besides being the flagship phone at the time, was essentially a camera with a phone tacked on. It takes upwards of 4 seconds to load the Camera app, part of which is the camera boot up sequence I admit, but there must be some room for improvement. They can't really drop support for its party piece already.
Too bad there is no discussion about the wrongfully long exposure times on Lumia devices. Almost no other phones go higher than ~1/12 without flash, where as for example the 930 uses even 1/4 sec, resulting in a complete blur if people are moving and unrealistically bright photos. If I want artificial light in the picture i would turn on the flash..
Lumiia 535 with Denim - I can't see any new functionality. How do I know if it's there? Some of the features are surely very welcome on non Snapdragon 800 devices.. especially since even the 830 does not use SD800.
Main improvements for non SD-800 devices at this point are speed. Although the improved algorithms likely made it over as well. Features added might be few/none over the Nokia/Lumia camera app, but if you're like most users going from the stock (default) Camera app to the latest Lumia Camera you're getting a lot of new stuff anyway!

So the new Lumia camera is faster on older hardware(even though it won't get any of the new features)? That's good to hear.kspirit - Friday, January 9, 2015 - link

How are folks getting the Denim update? (Specifically for a 930 on AT&T, if you can share)
