I don't understand the purpose of that chart. It leaves too much ambiguity between CPUs that are efficient at load vs CPUs that just have poor idle power management.
100% agree with XZerg. I was coming to this site because you had the idle and load charts. Those two infos really are needed. Not this delta chart. We do not even know where power consumption in watts at idle starts to add in the numbers.
Agreed. The delta is basically useless information, because it gives a CPU with a power range of 10W-20W and a CPU with a power range of 100W-110W the same score, and tells us nothing about how much power the part actually draws (so we can't use the info to size PSUs) or how much heat it might produce (so we can't use the info to size cooling).
The delta is, without the idle/load, completely meaningless.
I think that the Delta chart is designed to give an apples to apples comparison of how much power the CPU itself consumes under load. The platforms of all of those systems are vastly different. There's a range of motherboards from single socket consumer IVB to dual socket workstation/server Haswell and everything in between. While a comparison of raw platform power under idle and load certainly bears its own merit and and represents an interesting set of figures, it does not provide a meaningful comparison for the subject of this article - a CPU.
Delta power allows for all kinds of comparisons. Regardless of motherboard, RAM, etc you can establish that a given CPU will use (approximately) X number of watts under load. If you then provide performance figures for that load, you can get the compute efficiency of the CPU. In big data clusters, especially ones that primarily perform a specific workload this is an important figure.
It's a bit annoying, that despite it's ability to produce 16-core behemoths, Intel is still only setting 4-core chips in it's mainstream line. There is plenty of room for product differentiation here, but I guess lack of competition means Intel doesn't have any reason to add cores.
> but I guess lack of competition means Intel doesn't have any reason to add cores Yup. That's why it's lame to be a fanboy. You want many companies to succeed in a market with good product substitution.
Mainstream line does not need more than 4 HT cores. If you need more, haswell-E and haswell-EP are available to you. 5820k is low cost if you want or have need for a x99 chipset and ddr4.
Yeah, it's not lack of competition, it's lack of any good reason whatsoever to sell >4 cores into the mainstream market. Only a vanishingly tiny percentage of users can even fully utilize 4 cores; for those who can (and could use more), there exists both the enthusiast desktop and Xeon workstation segments.
This is insane. You can now have TWELVE Haswell cores FOR LESS POWER THAN MY 2004 PRESCOTT Pentium 4!
That is freaking amazing.
And while it's hopeless that I'll ever get to run something like this (probably even for a sever at work, much less in a desktop PC like I'd like), it's still freaking amazing to see what's possible :-D
What should be common to all those processors with lower results in Bioshock minimum frame rates is the added latency at the L3 or memory controller/system agent level. An easy test to see how much it can effect test results is to drop the frequency of the memory controller. The effect can be as much as half the performance for a 200 MHz drop, depending on the test (SPECviewperf 12 for me).
You're comparing different parts with different performance sold in different volumes to different markets for different purposes. How many A8 chips would it take to get the performance of an 8-core Haswell chip? 32? 64? The dollars-per-MIPS might not be as different as their overall costs.
All that is secondary to production cost. Trying to emphasize that the production cost of Intel chips is barely 30-50 bucks at the most. Probably much less since those mibile chips still get the profit. Some 4 core mobile chips with 1 billion transistors are already sold for 4 dollars and still bring the profit
To results, i would like to see comparison 65W Xeon with Core i7 architecture -65W model - 4590S head to head.
In comparison Core i7 3770k - for 320$ and this 1320$ is 1000 bucks for what? + 25% of performance in most of multi threaded benchmarks and - 5% in gaming and generally limited mainboard choice and + for ECC memory.
If there would be +50% in multithreaded apps i would consider Xeon for my workstation, otherwise it does make no sense. 12 weak cores is nothing to be excited, or my good for some web, DB server, or visualization - here im still curious about results.
Something wrong with the results they seem inconsistent, why doesn't 2687W v3 mop the floor with 5960X? By all means it should as it have both more cores and more cache, yet it loses to the i7 by a quite significant margin sometimes. Is that the result of using the bigger die which is quite different in cores arrangement and also have bigger but slower cache. Still, I think it should win practically everywhere and yet it even manages to loses to its predecessor(2687 V2) in Linux-Bench NPD FD and the margin of victory of 5960X is strangely high. Were they tested in different motherboards or even with MCE enabled on 5960X and disabled on 2687W V3? How can you explain those results?
Why are you guys doing gaming benchmarks on server processors? No one is buying $2500 processors for gaming when a $500-$1000 i7 will do just as well or better at it.
Where are the server workload benchmarks that used to accompany Xeon reviews? I want database benchmarks, not Tomb Raider benches.
Also, the power delta is stupid/useless, as others have pointed out. Higher deltas could mean less efficient, or better at idling, and there's no way to tell which is which.
The quantity of models, and their -purposely- confusing naming, paired with the scarcity of trustworthy reviews for all the models, make purchasing so difficult, that it discourages upgrades.
Similarly named processors have huge differences in performance, and prices that don't match it. Worse, the jungle of models also extends to older CPU, not just the last iteration. An older CPU may be more powerful, cheaper, or many other things which add a lot of confusion.
The asking prices are so high, that is better to not buy or upgrade, because the large number of processors rises the probability of making a wrong purchase. Is better not to run risks.
I'd like to see some citations that production costs between these chips are close to each other. Even allowing for that it's a naïve argument. Might as well say that the costs of Windows 8 and the movie Sharknado are the same because the production cost of the DVDs is the same in each case. Kind of misses the fact that billions are spent on R&D and that these costs must be recouped.
I'm now picturing you in a shop demanding all books be priced at a set rate per page because "it costs the same to print per page, don't it?"
(but still, citation that production costs actually are the same still required, please).

I wish, I have L5640 these are worth about $125, the E5-2650L is about $600, this is kinda a 2nd reflection of what was at the beginning of article, the older chips are still goo so they hold price.
I got a dual Xeon 2690 v3 rig at home, paired with a GTX750Ti, and the Asus ROG Swift. Waiting for the big Maxwell. If anyone wants any tests done, give me a hawler !
Anybody can clue me in why in Linux NPB and redis benchmarks single 4820K/4790K totally own single and dual Xeons. Or a Dual 2650Lv3 does worse than a single 2650Lv3?
Indeed. Redis is single threaded, and all the other CPUs are faster, but not three times as fast, so some analysis of what's going on would be appreciated.
There should be a line of discussion of why haven't CPU speeds increased in the past 5years in a significant way. My 5yr old Intel I7 is a 4 core at 3GHz. The ones discussed here are only 6 or 8 cores and run stock in the mid-3 to 4GHz range. So over 5yrs, the CPU capability has not grown 2 to 3times faster, and that only applies to applications that can use the extra cores and hyper-threading. The usual rule we work to is that people won't even notice a 50% speed increase. It has to be 2 to 3 times before it is noticed. Previously, a 3year refresh of a computer resulted in a 5 to 10x computer speed increase.
With the current barely noticeable 2x, why bother with the trouble of an upgrade? No wonder Intel's and AMD's sales figures are failing to grow.
