Uh, maybe they should like concentrate on like making the best high-end Android phone like every year instead of tons of half-assed models everyday to throw on the wall with almost everything falling to the floor, especially hilariously underspecced and overpriced "budget" phones that makes Xiaomi laugh their butts off. Preferably with far less bloatware junk preinstalled.

If they got that memo about their latest ugly Q3 financials, that is.

Aren't they doing both? The reviews I've read about the Galaxy Note 4's are pretty unanimous on it being the best of the best right now.

I really don't get why people promotes greedy sales tactics like the one Apple are using. Over-pricing one model weenie trying to convince people that this exact type of device is THE only one you want. Let people think for themselves.
  • theduckofdeath - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

    while, not weenie.

    I hate SwiftKey :)
...and also the lack of a simple edit button on this site. Come on Anandtech keep up with the times, will you? You were once the go to place for tech news. Haven't changed much around here since those 90's, except for the repetitive Apple promotions getting more and more out of hand.

Far from a top phone if you ask me! /Garret at http://www.topreport.org/phones/

The scale of the phones from the main image is waaaaaay off.

I accidentally made the A3 100px too short. Thank you for catching that.
  • solipsism - Friday, October 31, 2014 - link

Didn't Samsung add USB 3.0 to a smartphone a year ago? Why are they now sticking with USB 2.0? People realized it wasn't making their read/write any faster due to NAND limitations?
  • Brandon Chester - Friday, October 31, 2014 - link

    Horrible connector.
  • cosmotic - Friday, October 31, 2014 - link

The USB3 implementation was really flaky. Apparently there were problems with interference with data and voice while USB3 was connected. I think there were also driver problems and crashing/hanging/restarting issues.
  • Impulses - Friday, October 31, 2014 - link

Seems USB 3.0 RF interference is much more common and an order of magnitude higher than 2.1... Intel has a whole whitepaper on 2.4GHz/BT interference with USB 3.0. Can't say it's ever affected me but the only 3.0 device I have is a hard drive... USB 3.0 causing certain Logitech wireless mice to malfunction is pretty well documented tho.
  • jay401 - Sunday, November 2, 2014 - link

Truth. If you use a logitech wireless mouse, plugging it into a USB 3.0 connector next to one with a USB thumb drive in it, for example, will generally screw with the mouse's ability to respond to inputs and your cursor will intermittently lock up or stop responding. Ugh.

There is no way for something to be "very unique". It's either unique or it's not.
  • darwinosx - Friday, October 31, 2014 - link

More junk from Samsung now that Apple has effectively kicked them out of the high end smartphone market.
  • boozed - Friday, October 31, 2014 - link

    They have?
  • KPOM - Friday, October 31, 2014 - link

Yes. Did you notice that Samsung's profits were down 60% last quarter?
  • ruggia - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

So if Samsung is out of the high end smartphone market, who is in second place now? Or are you telling me this market is such a monopoly that is can't have more than one major players.

Also, I thought Samsung lagging in profit was more due to increased competition in low and mid range market
  • xype - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

    Jup, they have.
  • theduckofdeath - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

In his imaginary world Apple rules everything.

Are you sure these are full metal unibody? The back looks plastic in the pictures, which makes sense given the lack of antenna windows. Perhaps their claim of unibody is more to do with the sim card and micro sd card slots being trays in the metal frame because of the non removable back?
  • watzupken - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

Samsung is all over the place as usual. They just cannot seem to focus on a few models. And this looks like a IPhone 5 to be honest.
  • theduckofdeath - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

Top 10 annoying things you read on the internet:
Why make a list? Apple trolls claiming the rights to everything fills most of those spots.
  • djscrew - Sunday, November 2, 2014 - link

I love how people view it as Android vs Apple and that any criticism of either device is tantamount to taking sides. How about you look at it like this. Apple dominates the market because they focus on making a few good products. Samsung meanwhile seems to be spraying a firehose of products at the market with the hopes that something sticks. It's sort of dumb. I also know people who have had Sammy phones break on them (not dropped or abused) and Sammy did not provide any warranty whatsoever.
  • lolipopman - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

Did I read that right? The phone with a 5 inch screen only has a resolution of 1080p but the 4.5 inch one has qHD. What is this?
  • lolipopman - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

    Never mind, I'm an idiot.
  • extide - Sunday, November 2, 2014 - link

qHD is not QHD ;) but yeah its stupid they are si\o similarly named
  • stefstef - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

as always a good, reasonably priced product from Samsung. much more attractive than the americano Skunk phones. rotten blackberry, chinadized Motorola, freaky crappy Google and the slaughterhouse products from once Quality handymaker Nokia. asia rules, Keep up the good work Samsung !
  • piiman - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

Damn it looks like an iPhone So when will Apple file the suit? Any guesses?

I had the opportunity to read a Korean language Samsung strategy paper last night.
The gist of the paper was that Samsung Electronics feels very threatened by the rise of Xiaomi in China.Their solution (or as the paper said, their new weapons) are metal-body phones and flexible displays. They lamented the fact that Xiaomi beat them to market with a metal bodied phone in CHina.

In my opinion the paper was another example of Samsung's gimmick-based approach to electronics. They seem to be convinced that their profits dropped 60% because they got out-gimmicked by Xiaomi, so they vow to respond by doubling down on gimmicks.
  • StrangerGuy - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

You mean they will release a metal model with 800x480 screen and a lame dual core, plastic models with flexible screen with 3 different screen resolutions, 4 screen sizes for 15 individual SKUs not counting regional variants, then add in region locking, lagwiz UI and bloatware to take up 90% of the internal flash...While all are so overpriced it makes Xiaomi laugh out loud and potential buyers left confused whether Samsung will even update the firmware 3 months down the road.

"Why? Why people ain't buying them up? Because we don't have enough models yet!", Samsung.
  • tipoo - Sunday, November 2, 2014 - link

I wonder if that low 1.2GHz clock points to Cortex A7s?
  • extide - Sunday, November 2, 2014 - link

Well its either A7's or A53's...
  • toyotabedzrock - Monday, November 3, 2014 - link

Why use metal on the midrange phone? And you listed the A3 as having 802.11ac and the A5 as having 802.11a.
  • semo - Tuesday, November 4, 2014 - link

No user removable battery. Booo! That's the one thing you could count on Samsung not screwing up.

Also, these are likely to be ARMv8 compatible phones. The A3 is likely to have a Snapdragon 410
