I assume the Wifi hub function only works if the drive is connected to other Wifi? What about if there's no external internet-connected Wifi available? Can't Wifi Direct allow for usage of mobile internet while the phone is connected to Wifi?
Yes. There is an option for 'Move' or 'Copy' in the SD Card Import settings. 'Move' will clear the card, while 'Copy' will ensure you have one copy on the HDD and one copy on the SD card.

No. It creates its own network.Check the user manual, page 8 (english).
