In 1997 I was doing a 4th grade science project on RISC vs CISC processing architecture. And while I might have grown more interested in physics and etc. since then, it's still wonderful to be able to come to Anandtech and learn something about computer engineering every once in a while. I also have faith in the team that has and will continue to run this site. AT could easily be my homepage til the day I die.
GL in the future Anand. I know at some point you'll make rare surprise appearances with articles when something unbelievable happens :), like AMD retaking the performance crown LOL, or the debut of the first quantum cpu... Writing technique only gets better with age. We'll see you then!
That was my reaction as well. Don't take this the wrong way, Anand, but somehow I always assume that people that I'm learning from(like you) are older and wiser. The realization that we're just about the same age is humbling.

I've been reading your site on and off ever since 1998 or so when I was a kid a couple years younger than yourself. Whenever I come back it is because I want to know what the state of the consumer hardware industry is, and I know there is no better site for original in-depth analysis, and most importantly, sane and balanced writing. I've seen the move from solely enthusiast PC hardware to Apple products and mobile, and it has always worked because of your genuine openness to learning.

Anand, I've been visiting your site since about late 1998. Most of the tech and gaming sites that were around back then either don't exist anymore or are a shadow of their former selves, but AnandTech has always been top notch. Reading one of your new SSD or CPU articles was always something that I really looked forward to. I couldn't imagine what it was like for you flying all over the world and talking to the big people in the industry, but I am sure it was anything but dull. I will continue to visit AnandTech, but not seeing articles or posts written by you anymore does make me sad. Good luck with the future and I hope you find happiness with whatever you decide to do.

In the 90's, I remember stumbling on to this page of the web, run by a kid who was reviewing a new motherboard. I was so impressed with the review, that I ended up purchasing the motherboard and found the motherboard every bit as “hot” as this kid said it was. Who knew what he would become and how he influenced so much of the technology sites on the web. He set the bar for everyone else. Keep in touch kid!
When I joined in 2000, I was a high school drop out doing construction work. 14 years later and I've worked in the software industry for 13 years and speak at tech conferences about computer hardware and test automation.

I can't believe that this is the end of an era. I think I have been following this site since just after its move off of geocities (I remember reading articles here from my freshman year in college, which would have been '98 in). I also remember the old forums before the end of October 99 when we were all needed to recreate accounts. The community here was truly built by your dedication and passion for getting us the best information as you knew it and keeping us up to date with the latest hardware releases. Back in those days, finding a place that really kept up with the changing hardware market was hard to find (well, not really, as there were only 2-3 good sources, but search engines were still not very good or comprehensive (in fact google did not even exist yet)).
I think I can say with many people here that we will miss your insights and pull that you had within the hardware industry. Over the years that pull is what resolved many serious issues, from consumers being abandoned by manufacturers when fatal bugs were found, to firmware being fixed, to flat out lies and misrepresentation of information spreading about certain hardware capabilities. I hope the new team can continue the good work you created and continued all these years (they have very big shoes that are now missing which can never be filled, but simply stood upon to hopefully continue the work).
Thanks so much for all your work. I've been reading the site for almost 15 years and it was one the principal sites that fostered and developed my interest in hardware.

Huh, you were just doing video blogging and now you're stopping all blogging? I can totally understand the urge to never want to fly again and to step back a bit, but how about an opinion blog or something every once in a while?
Just technology-wise, there have been so many things over the years that you have had a positive impact on. One that comes to mind is your impact on SSD performance, the initial craze for maximum sequential speed at the expense of random IO that often led to stuttering, etc. and pushing manufacturers to deliver overall performance. I'd also say you've had a huge impact on mobile as well. I loved looking forward to your articles explaining how tech works at a low level and what design choices have to be considered on CPUs, SSDs, dissecting, analyzing and searching for answers on things like the architecture for Apple's various new SoC over the years, and countless other things. My biggest fear at this moment is we won't get to benefit from you pushing things forward (like with SSDs as an example). You will be missed :(
Thankyou Anand. I've been reading and listening to your articles for the better part of 13 years now (since I myself was about 13). As much as you have thanked the people over the years for what they have taught you, I would like to extend the same thanks to you. No one single person has taught me as much in regards to technology as you have. Especially in-depth product knowledge that I have drawn upon on many occasions when asked for advice from friends, family and colleagues.
I hold AnAndTech to be the most trusted, reliable and read-worthy tech site on the internet today - and a large part of that is due to the standards that you have set.

If there were two articles that stick out in my mind the most I think it would be the Intel Moorestown article and the AMD RV770 story. Both of those, particularly the Moorestown article had me reading for hours. You did a good job explaining the details and I really appreciated the effort you put into your work.
I've been visiting AnandTech for about 15 years and while I can't say my passion for technology would have been any less without AnandTech, it sure would have been different. My career has grown from my love of technology, so thank you, Anand, for whatever part you played in me arriving where I am today.

I've been a fan since the early days. '97-'98 Seems about right. I met you(Anand) at a computer big box store in the Raliegh. I think it was CompUSA. I was shopping with a friend for his new video card. He was insisting on getting an S3 card I think. I was telling him about 3Dfx and how they where changing things. I can't remember exactly how the conversation started with Anand but he told me about his website and said I should check it out. I've been coming back ever since. I'm sad right now but I wish Anand good luck in his future endeavors.

I'm honestly shocked and saddened by this news. I can't believe Anand is leaving the site. Over the past decade this has become my favorite tech site bar none. It's insightful, professional, and maintains a high degree of journalistic integrity. I can only hope hope it will continue to do so in the years to come (I have faith in Ryan's abilities, love his articles too). But I think I'm really going to miss just listening to Anand talk about tech, really interesting and informed perspective on things.

Wow. End of an era. I missed all the shake ups at Tom's, Sharky, Inquirer, etc. So this is "a first" for me. I've been at OCZ for over 10 years now. Pretty much everything I've learned about computers, I REALLY learned reading AT. I think I read The SSD Anthology at least 50 times. You are the reason I know what an SSD is and does and how it should behave. Not to mention you single handedly changed OCZ SSD firmware, warranties, and customer service initiatives.
I know you've been doing this for over 17 years, but I will kindly thank you for 10 of those. Before that, I couldn't name one component inside a computer...a sad existence!
I'm sad you are leaving this crazy world but I'm more sad this post didn't mention your favorite product you tested over the last 17 years...the OCZ "brain mouse." ;)

I don't know how long I've read AnandTech. I know I started early in college (which I started in 1996) so it must have been very early on. I still recall one of our professors telling us in 1999 in our class on computer hardware that we should just read AnandTech and we'd ace the class. As someone that already was a reader, he was certainly right about that.
Years later, as my wife pursued her PhD at UNC, I still recall being amazed that one of my fellow programmers went to high school with Anand. At that point I had no idea that a couple years later I would start writing for the site as well.
The example Anand set has given all of us that write here something to strive for. I will never know as much about CPUs or SSDs that Anand does, but he helped me understand them better than I ever did before. We all have a lot to live up to here now, and we're all going to do as much as we can to do so.
I started reading AnandTech back in 1999, and it has always been my first choice for high quality, in depth reviews. It has always been a cut above the rest. Thank you for helping me choose great parts for the many PCs I've built over the years. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors!

I can honestly say I'm sad to see you go but I understand your reason. I have been reading AnandTech for as long as you've been posting on it through a 2400 Baud modem to the suprisingly not light years better broad band connection from TW Cable and I can only feel like a little bit of my memory from those days is fading away.
My hope is that this site will continue to be what it has always been, a truly independent review of everything tech and not a business trend to follow and abuse for profit.

Came here for the tech, then got emotional when I saw that cover photo - it could mean only one thing. I have been an avid reader of this site since forever. It helped shape my love and interest in technology and hardware. I have frequented this site almost daily for over a decade because of the quality of writing and unbiased attitude. When you started covering Macs more, I was really excited (as a life long Mac user). I'm really grateful for all of your efforts Anand and you will be missed, but I won't be going anywhere as a reader. I'll be back here daily to follow what the rest of your amazing team has to offer. Let me get this out there first. Wow. About 15 years ago I found your site when I was in grad school. It fanned the flames of my new found love of computers. I went from a novice to one who is quite proficient with modern technology. Though things are not like they once were as we move out into the mobile computing age this site still is a wonderful resource both for it's content and for the fellow members that make up our online community.

Anand, your article on CPU architecture during the iPhone 3GS review and The SSD Anthology has brought my understanding and passion to these field to a whole new level, and I have been following every major review article from anandtech.com ever since. As a person who has followed this site, since way back when it first came up. I can safely say I'm sorry to see you go, and you will definitely be missed.
I remember reading about things like the Abit mobo's, during the K6 and K7 days on this site, like the KT7A, KT133 and 133A. And even back before I took an interest in AMD, the slot based Pentium 2's. Also chose many a board back then based on reviews on this site. SL2YK P2 300, was the thing way back then, and I had one, first on a Shuttle Hot 440LX board, and then an Abit 440BX. All of which were reviewed on this site.
I hope even though you're leaving the site manages to remain as impartial to brand as it always has, except a few occasions depending on the writer. Which is one of the biggest reasons I've came here first for review over other sites.
I've been with the site ever since it went live with its own URL. The news and advice here has guided me in my PC builds up through and including my recent 4970K/Z97/R9 290 build. It has also guided me in my mobile purchases and in the advice I give to many friends, family members, and co-workers. Thank you, Anand, for your contribution to society though the creation and growth of anandtech.com. I wish you the best in everything that lies ahead for you!

So, it happens. FINALLY, the sale of an Internet Property that we've all seen coming for a long time now. It's like the 54 square acres of farmland smack-dab in the middle of Boomtown Middle America Tract Housing that previously just "refused to sell because my father bought this land in 1852...."
I guess the offer finally had enough zeros at the back of it, eh? Don't blame you. Smart business says that "You have to know when it's time to move on to other things." That time is now, apparently. AT and the forums will be dead in the next 30 days. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's wondered how you have justified keeping the forums up and running for so long.

I think the reason you have not seen other comments along the lines of your post, is that what you wrote was ridiculously passive-aggressive, not to mention uninformed. Anand has built something here that is going to last a long time.

I am sad to hear the news but at the time, I do understand completely. I wish all of the best for you, Anand and really do appreciate all of the work you have put into the site throughout the years and all of the great content and information that you have provided. Not to mention the vast amount of information that you have educated me over the years.
I stumbled upon the site in 1999 trying to find info on motherboards when I was building my first PC. The articles impressed me both with the technical detail (I had little idea that a motherboard even did much besides connecting things and delivering electrical power) and the joyful enthusiasm in the approach. Somehow that got me coming back, the technical level of the articles keeping the connection between otherwise-forgotten courses in computer engineering and the accomplishments of modern industry, and the enthusiasm maintaining my excitement about them. Thanks for a great run, and I too look forward to the occasional perspective piece in coming years. Whatever happens, don't lose that spirit!
Dear Anand, Beyond the daily dose of tech (needless, but still OK to add, this site is all my browsers' home page for years), I never thought I should or would write so seriously here about anything as - a) the site has been so US-centric that some comment from India would never be treated worth whatever it is, mainly by the big companies (market ??), and hence the people at the site itself. b) this really comes as a shock and so probably would never have crossed the mind even in its craziest states. I take this opportunity to thank you for whatever you and 'your' (yeah, even with Ryan or someone else it will always be your) site have been to me all these years too, just like you've said through all the knowledge as well as the actual process of sharing it. Its truly beyond words. I also wish to put here my request to extend anandtech to .in as our country is taking big strides into the future, may be with all other nations, but with a decisive determined frame of mind. We have just effected a massive positive change in the overall governance of public life and that should in every manner possible be, at the very least, conducive to such attempt. I had in my small capacity as an individual tried to raise certain issues when they bothered us here but the network of manufacturers, dealers and distributors refused to pay any heed. An entity combining all these small individual voices into a major force could do the trick for a good cause to Indian consumers too, if something of that nature takes place here. Great, Great, Great work from the beginning till now and as more technical reviewers come up, the site is getting even better.
(A little preference for Intel from the beginning and especially the last few years, can be forgotten due to the large performance gap between Intel and AMD CPUs, but I would like a little more criticism to Intel on bad choices or actions i.e for the packaging of CPUs after Sandy)
Sorry to see you go, but thanks for all of your work. It's hard to believe I have been checking this URL on a near-daily basis since Mendocino. Sharky's and FiringSquad fell by the wayside over the years but I knew I still had all the tech coverage I needed right here.
I am following this site for about 15 years + or - one year, and I had NEVER been disappointed. I can't say the same for other sites as old or older, as big or bigger than Anandtech.
As one of your loyal readers who has been following you from the very beginning, but never leaves a comment I just want to say a big THANK YOU. The amount of knowledge I have gained by reading your site over the years is greater than all the other tech sites i read put together.
Your passion for really trying to understand how things work is a large part of what has made this site so successful. I hope you can take that with you in whatever endeavor you are about to embark upon.

I know already that i'm going to miss the historical background which was present in every Anand's review. This is what I'm gonna miss more. I remember the first article I came to Anandtech for in high school, an article on goldfingers for the K6 ;) Anand and I being only 11 days apart in age, I reflect a lot on how the site has evolved over the years, and how I myself have evolved in tech. I've read\checked Anandtech\Dailytech for updates almost every day for the last 15+ years because it's always been my source for professional tech news with integrity.
Many have come and gone, I used to read HardOCP, Tom's Hardware, Storage Review, and still occasionally check Engadget, but Anandtech is everyday.
Congratulation's Anand, I hope you can keep yourself busy with something new and interesting.
I rarely post comments anywhere, but I couldn't resist posting a farewell/thank you note here. I've been noticing for the past two years an unusual amount of new faces around here, and I didn't know what to expect; I guess everything makes sense now. In any case, I've not only been an AT reader, but a big fan of yours since 02'-03'. I visit 2-3 other similar sites for hardware reviews, but whenever new hardware comes to the market, I always value more the AT version of the benchmark hands down, and that has a lot to do with you. I am deeply saddened that you are "retiring" from the site, although I am pretty sure you'll end up in a nice position at <insert here any monster IT of a company>. I hope everything works out alright for the site(unfortunately there are sites similar to AT, which didn't make it after their creator stepped down, or their quality suffered considerably) and for you personally. Good luck to any of your future endeavors and thanks for everything. You did a hell of a job and judging by the amount of comments here, you will be missed sorely by all of us.

Anandtech's articles have always been the gold standard for anyone seeking advice on tech, and even when there's been something to disagree with in an article, it always sits within the context that "Ahh, this article is only 10 times better than any other site's. Why isn't it 20 times better?"
When I see reviews on other tech sites I've bookmarked, I know I'm going to read Anand's first.
One of the saddest moments in the Internet for me. I have read your reviews since 1998 when I built my first 300A machine. I have always enjoyed your work. I am 32 as well, and I felt like I have grown in tech knowledge tremendously from this site.

I began writing about tech not much time after you, and since I discovered AnandTech in the early 2000s it became absolutely essential both my amusement, my interests, and my own job. The depth and technical insight you set as one of the pillars of AT have been differential and pivotal in my (and I guess everyone who has read AnandTech over the years) understanding of how tech has evolved over the years.
I know how difficult it is to build a strong audience and to maintain the quality of a tech site for so long, so I can't only say how proud I am of you and your team's work. You've done an amazing job throughout the years and it's really incredible how AT has been able to keep itself as a beacon of tech knowledge when other strong tech sites with far less technical depth have attracted other kind of tech users.
Congrats for that, and best of luck on your new project, whatever it is. We really owe you that tremendous debt of gratitude you mention too. Even more. And of course, AnandTech will be my number one spot when trying to get the best, more detailed, more coherent information, reviews and analysis about what's going on in tech.

I started reading Anandtech when i was building my first PC in 2009. That machine still works and I read Anandtech articles first for any subject ,ever since. You have to respect the 'unbiased' in which the articles are posted with. #respect All the best Ahead!!

So long Anand! I remember my first foray to internet tech sites in 1998/1999 during the celeron 300a oc to 450 craze. I gravtited here and to Toms. I don't know when but somewhere along the way I stopped checking Toms and started coming here almost exclusively, for the objective and in depth analysis you provided and still provide in a diverse number of tech subjects.
The site you've built is my #1 source for computer-tech info in the internet. The staff you've built over the years is top notch, and will continue on. This business is tough as hell, and being in it for 18 years is nearly unheard of. Best of luck in your next adventures!
Dear Anand, let me wish you best of luck, whatever goal you decide to pursue in the future. I have been an avid reader of Anandtech literally from the very beginning, going back to the good old days of the AMD K6 in early -97. And I have kept on going back because this site has always been a hallmark of quality, be it in writing, testing or any other aspect. You did well for a scrawny fourteen year old kid and I salute you, and I salute the great legacy you leave behind.

And to this day it's my favorite site on the internet, I find it one of the most professional and reliable sites out there, and I must say I agree with you about the anandtech staff, very knowledgeable, professional, and outstanding writing. 2 weeks ago i read your K6-Review from 1997. Again after 1997. It was just for fun. The battle of CPUs were much more interesting back then... Intel vs AMD vs Cyrix. The battle of review-sites as well: Anand vs. Tom. vs. another site whose name i cant remember anymore ;-)

I remember when Sharky and Voodoo Extreme were around, big in their day, and I think it's amazing you've done so well as you have, maintaining some semblance of yourself in the process. Up until you "discovered" Apple products, you were an incredible reviewer of enthusiast technology and upgrades, a reliable source of information. Even now, there are reviewers you've hired that are incredible writers in their own right.
By chance, are you going to work for AMD? Given AMD's hiring habits of late and Anandtech's close relationship to AMD, it wouldn't shock me.

Wow - what a surprise! First, a heart felt thanks from an old (> twice your age) EE who spent his entire career (at least from '81) in PC's and computer technology. Your reviews/comparisons were an absolute God-sent present to those who had neither the time or equipment to do them or to research trends/future products. Thank you! Second, don't retire and count your money. You are far too talented to not share your knowledge and skills. IF you haven't already, find a NEW challenge and devote the same energy/compassion to it as you have with AnandTech and I'll bet you'll be far happier. During the last CES (2014), I got he opportunity to see you and Brian while you were recording the Mobile Show at the Intel booth. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7665/anandtech-mobil... There was a guy standing next to me, which used to be a former writer at AT and we were talking about Anand and truly how great he is. I told him that for me, Anand is a legend (and a live one at the age of 32) ! not many can say that about themselves. Anandtech has been my #1 tech site for as long as I can remember, when I truly wanted all the detailed tech material that no one else in the this industry can seem to provide, at least not in the AT style. Anand, I know that you are the main reason for that and it's why a lot of the reviews and articles here have been both incredibly interesting and even inspiring: to dig deeper and to push our knowledge further.

Of course there are always ways to improve testing and analysis of what seems to be an almost infinitely complex subject, I hope that the new AT will still strive to advance testing and streamline the presentation of results, with more meta and statistical analysis. Considering just how much the press depends on the industry and how difficult the position of tech sites really is, what we've got on page and between the lines is not bad, not bad at all. It's truly a shame that tech-reporting requires so much traveling.
I just wish to echo many of the comments here and thank you for the years of good work you put into this site. It's one of only a handful that I turn my add-blocker off for! I'm sure you won't disappear from the tech world - but I'm super intrigued about what next. Will watch with interest for news :)

Sad to see you go... I've visited Anandtech for the first time around 2003 while I was looking for reviews for CPUs and MBs for my custom PC. The reviews found here were crucial in the purchase of my first PC, my first built ever actually. Since that day I nearly visited Anandtech every day. I only found AT about 10 years ago... I got sick of the astroturfing on TH and looked around for something else, something better...
I visit the site two or three times a week, unless I'm looking for an upgrade or a new build and then I visit every day, reading old articles and reviews and checking out Bench. I haven't made a hardware purchase without checking first on AT since my AGP 7600.
I've followed Anandtech since the very beginning (literally, since I was 12). I am 30 and grew up in a rural area with very few "geeks" to interact with and Anandtech had a profound influence on my interests in technology. I used the information on this site to build my first computer, to help my friends and family with their devices, and to become the all around tech support guru that they rely on. I have never been active on the forums or in comments, but I really want to thank you, Anand, for all you have contributed. I wish you the best of luck. Thank you to all of Anandtech for awesome work over the years. Congrats to Ryan Smith, I can't think of a better person to take over and I look forward to the future of Anandtech.

I have been a regular visitor to this website since I was 14. As a young boy, I would look forward to reading your deeply analytical articles on new technologies like new CPU architectures or SSDs. I will miss seeing your name at the top of the page but like you said, you have left the website in good hands. I remember early on when you first started letting others write the main articles, I could tell that it was Anand's writing. Halfway through the first page, I would quickly scroll to the top and see that Ananad's name wasn't there. At first I was disappointed but with time, the new writers have achieved the same quality if not better that Anandtech always strives for. Anand, you will be missed and I wish you all the best in your bright future!
Dear Anand, I think you are awesome, I think your website is awesome, and I think your reviews are awesome. I also think that at 32, moving on to a new challenge is probably right. I am 40 and I know well that these 20 years from 30 to 50 will dictate how well we live our retirement so we must seek the place where we add the most value and are challenged the most. I've been reading you since the beginning. I'm also very close in age to you (I'm a little older :) ). Your site and the early days of Tom's Hardware sent me off on a journey of building my own computer, installing the first generation of 3D graphics cards, and expanding beyond programming into electrical engineering. I now work in industry at a company whose products you've reviewed.
I want you to know that your site has always been the best (particularly the articles you authored). When other sites started to cater specifically to Intel or AMD crowds, I could count on your articles to be honest assessments. I think you're also picking a good time to try something new -- the componentized PC industry appears to be slowing, and whether it's internet software or deeply integrated computers like phones or wearables, the DIY days of computing are slowly fading. I hope rather than completely retiring, you will apply your skills in the tech industry where you can have even greater impact.
Email me if you are interested in an introduction into a big industry player who you probably haven't heard of and isn't likely to be commoditized anytime soon. :)

Anand, I cannot thank you and your staff enough for the valuable knowledge that I have accrued from this site over the years. Back in '05 I was just a freshman in High School. I pretty much knew nothing about the in's and outs of computers and their components. I spent hours and hours pouring over all the great articles and reviews on this site. It lit a tech fire in me that continues to this day as I am not only a consumer but a professional within the industry. Without a doubt, millions have been intrigued.
This is easily one of the best sites available, which provides an extensive and thorough review of any product you could find. Kudos to your work dear Anand. I sincerely hope Ryan could take up the torch and bring your child "AnandTech" to further glory.

Really crafted a tech journalism career when it was non-existent Remembering my teen days when i started my pc business as well assembling P3-P4 and only valuable source of information i could gather anywhere was Anandtech. Motherboard, Chip level repairing....was my life and Anandtech was my soul....Once With processor advancement and so much tech growth...Ur site has really kept pace.
But always wondered how did u learn so much about microprocessors...So in depth from 8085 to Celeron to Pentium to Mobile processors, ARM and so many things in between... You rock BOSS!!!

I grew up leafing through the pages of PC World, Byte and other computer magazines in the 70s and 80s, graduated to bulletin boards and Compuserve, and then came the World Wide Web. For me, this was too slow to do much in the way of surfing until around 1996 or so, and it can't have been long after that that I came across Anandtech.
Those were exciting times, and you were a pioneer of what became possible in that new forum for communication and the dissemination of ideas.
Thanks for working so hard on the reviews. Your determination to find objective ways to differentiate between competing products made this site a reference point for consumers across the World, and was a benign influence on the whole PC and, later, mobile technology industries.
In keeping with your philosophical approach to criticism, I will add that the forums seem to have died a little sinced the late 90s, early 2000s period, but perhaps this was a consequence of wider choice across the internet (social media), and the maturity or decline of the traditional PC industry and the Wintel platform.
This and Tom's Hardware were the two site I joined when I started to build my own computers. Later on I depended on this site more than other sites. Wish you good luck on your future, Anand.

Hi Anand, I'm a reader of this site since 2000 and boy have I learned many things. At the beginnings I used to go in web-cafes and download articles (print/save) on floppies to read at my leisure at home where I had no internet back in those days. Back in the 2000's the knowledge gathered on your site allowed me to build a nice computer-building business which made me some coins during college and now a few years later I can say I'm still a bit of a computer guru for friends and family. All this I owe to anandtech.com and other couple of sites that share free information - I'm glad you found pleasure and financial success in this adventure and wish you good luck in whatever you plan to do next.
I still remember in 2005 when I noticed for the first time the reference to acceleration of MPEG-4 video encoding/decoding in the description of the ATI radeon x700. I spent a couple of weeks discussing what that means at an unofficial ATI forum, at no avail. Before giving up, I wrote to Anand requesting information regarding video acceleration on GPUs. No reply, and I thought at least I gave it a shot.
A couple of months later, Anand wrote for the first time on the web (AFAIK) an amazing article about GPU-accelerated video encoding, a concept no one explored before at any depth, and later exclusively got a beta tool for video encoding from ATI, not released previously anywhere.
I still remember the best tech-oriented bed story for geeks, the behind-the-scenes success story of the AMD 4000HD series (The RV770 Story). And I still hope for another, equally exciting bed story.
Anand, you have no idea how much respect I have for you. I'm sad that you are leaving. With that said, I am happy that you decided to do whatever makes you happy, and I wish you the best of luck in your future.

I don't always agree with the conclusions, and the tests are too Windows specific for my taste, but they are probably the most in-depth hardware reviews on the net and I both benefited from them and enjoyed reading them. This site has been, for a long time, my first port of call for reliable technology information. Even where other sites have appeared handling certain specific topics more thoroughly - graphics cards, for instance, or acoustics - Anandtech has always managed to provide a generalist overview with some seriously heavy insights of its own into topics such as CPU design. The transition to being the first and best site providing a proper, weighty insight into mobile technology happened so seamlessly that I barely noticed it happen. I remain extremely appreciative for it.
So, thank you, Anand. Thank you for bringing us this site, nurturing it, and sending it off out into the world to continue your work.

I've been reading Anand since day 1 and a forum member for over 15 years. I still remember watching his little video reviews of the AMD K6 while I was working at a small computer store in Arizona. I came to AT pretty late, around the time you posted the "definitive" SSD backgrounders, which is probably a big loss for me: Looks like you could have filled the gap that BYTE left.
I'm not so sure I like the idea of you going to Apple: Last "Apple" I ever owned was a Apple ][ clone, because it was the perfect DIY computer.
For a techie there is nothing in an Apple unless you get to build them (which is what you'll get to do now ;-)
Problem I see there, though, that there is no such thin as a perfect computer: There is only a perfect computer for any given use case.
I guess the biggest problem with your new job will be having to compromise all the time: Having to build a rather low fixed number of compromises (for the largest possible customer base), which will always leave you yearning for the truly perfect device.
1) All CE is perfect for a given use case. You building your own "PC" is for your specific use case.
2) How exactly do you build your own notebook, tablet, smartphone, and (perhaps) wearables? Sure, it's technically possible, but it's unrealistic to think that DIYers aren't buying these complete products from the vendor of their choice.

I have been a passionate reader since I first found your site in my early teen years (~10 yrs ago). This is an odd coincidence. This month we are closing our cybercafe (gate58.dk), we opened 19 march 1997. I've been a loyal reader of Anandtech since the very early days in the late 90's and watched the site grow into THE best site on the net for detailed PC hardware reviews and analysis. To say I will miss your amazing writing is an understatement Anand. I wish you all the best with your future endeavours.
Congratulations Anand! I've been reading your blog since the beginning when you were literally a kid. The reviews were always top notch, to the point, and unbiased. Good luck on the path you have chosen.
This is a sad day for us. Your articles and knowledge literally taught me enough over the years that I was able to run my own company for almost a decade. I too decided to move on after that, but I continue to follow the industry, and build custom machines for family and friend every now and then.
So thank you. I am sure that there are thousands of us out here that could say you helped them in so many ways too.
It will not be the same without you. And that is what makes this a sad day.
Thanks for all the hard work you've done for us over the years. It feels like just a few years ago that I found your website and tried to find out which 440BX motherboard to buy (ended up with Abit BH6) for my Pentium II.
Now I was looking forward to reading about the inner workings of A8 next week or in the coming months (and I hated mobile until we got good smartphones). I guess that'll have to wait. I really really hope someone is able to pick up the torch on that one :-)

I feel strange nostalgic melancholy reading this announcement. I've been a reader of Anandtech almost from the day it started. I immediately appreciated the level of no nonsense technical breakdowns that formed the basis of all your reviews. I immediately trusted the integrity of this site to not sell out and to present honest opinions of the tech being reviewed even if it meant telling us the ugly truth. I'm sad you are going Anand but I will certainly keep supporting the site, as you rightly acknowledge, for a long time now this site has been as much and probably more about the team of people you brought together than it has been about you. I am sure they will stay loyal to the underlying philosophy that makes Anandtech what it is. So long and thanks for all the fish :)

I started reading your reviews in 97 and built my first computer with the information from your blog. I was amazed at the quality of the information back then and I still am today. Now I work fulltime with IT and AnandTech has been an invaluable source of information.
You helped me steer clear of Celeron which was new in 97 or 98 and you saved me a ton of trouble with your SSD-coverage in the last few years. You will be missed! But I will not give up on AnandTech, that is a promise.
Anand it's a bittersweet feeling reading your last post but I'm very happy for you in making this decision. Whilst my visits have waned over the years, a lot of my early knowledge of tech came from spending hours trawling these pages around the time of dialup modems and now I have a successfully career in the IT industry, perhaps even thanks to you. All the best in the future and you have my gratitude for providing such a great website and service, yes something that does the trend! Carl.

This is the site that got me started in tech back in 2001. To this day, I still frequent only anandtech and one other site. No bullcrap click bait, no slanted reviews, and, of course, the best tech forums on the net. Thanks for everything.
Wow... this is quite the shock... I remember the GeoCities days back when I was just a few short miles from where it all began. I remember buying a motherboard from my "latest" home computer at the time and looking on the package and seeing "As reviewed by AnandTech" and thinking "Holy Sh!t... I know that guy!"... well, I felt like I knew you anyway... You've been a source of inspiration for me (and many others) all along.

I've been a reader (and avid fan) of this site since just before the turn of the century, and I have stuck with this site not only because of the deep understanding of the tech that the writers bring to the table, but also for the excellent writing that they use to convey their findings with. At a time when most review sites were just comparing video cards by seeing which one had a higher FRAPS score in Quake, AnandTech was able to explain (clearly) why and how one video card was faster than another. I also really enjoy how much I can get from the comments on most articles. It's a testament to the quality of the writers and articles that the comments sections in an AnandTech review doesn't devolve into a "you guys are just a bunch of *insert brand here* fanboys!" I thank you for bringing a superior level of excellence to the internet, and for maintaining it for 17.5 years!

1997, huh? I cannot recall for sure when I first tuned in, but it seems as though it was at the very beginning of AnandTech. Like everyone posting here, I'm grateful beyond words for your providing me with a site that has, since its inception, been my go-to authority on everything PC. I finally decided that Microsoft committed such a "crime against computerdom" with the fiasco known as Windows 8, that I left the fold and transitioned myself completely back to Apple (desktop, laptops, tablets, and phones) after 23 years as a PC aficionado and builder. I therefore won't miss your presence here, Anand, as much as most of my fellow geeks, but my gratitude for your mountains of help over the last 17 years will be as great as theirs. Godspeed.
Good luck Anand. It took a while for me to value your site as the best source of information. I was a follower of Tom's back in the day when he was still calling out "Satan Clara" Intel while trumpeting AMD. Once he stopped writing, the site went down hill fast. I hope AT remains the top quality source for hardware information that it is today!

Thanks Anand! You have taught me a lot about computer hardware and I have been better informed from the articles that you have written. I am very excited for the future for you and this site. I have been enjoying the current articles from the other authors and I fully support the changes that are being made.
I started reading anandtech, tomshardware, arstechnica, hardocp, aceshardware, sysopt, and many of the other great tech sites back in 1998. Many have disappeared entirely or faded into near-irrelevance (toms). It sucks to see Anand move away from the press side of things because he was someone you could always trust to look out for consumers. His site reflected that approach while still carrying enough industry clout that he was able to get yet-to-be-released products ahead of review embargo and produce critical reviews that negated company PR spin.
Anandtech has been a major catalyst for multiple product recalls and price drops over the years, so seeing Anand shift to the other side and working for a single company is disconcerting. His critics will probably point to this job transition as proof he was drinking the Apple kool aid, but I think The Kid continually displayed more integrity than that, even when taking AMD money for their own subsection on his site. Hopefully the groundwork laid for his former site's future can continue with a strong consumer-oriented focus without losing credibility, as happened to tomshardware after the doctor sold out.
Anand thanks for the wild and interesting ride along with saving me money versus poor puchases. You went from The Kid, to Boy Wonder to Old Man Hermit. Ya even made Intel quiver more than once. Bet your 17 year old self never saw that one coming. Cheers.
I am sorry and saddened to see you leave, Anand. I've followed the site since 2000. I've had the (AT) site and forums bookmarked in all of my pcs'/laptops'/netbooks'/tablets'/smartphones' browsers since then.
Has it been that long? I remember my first exposure to the AMD line of server CPU's named Opteron on this site. I've always cherished the balance of content and advert, and the succinct, informative content that that AT maintained while other sites declined into advertorial. This may not be Google, Apple or Microsoft but nonetheless you should be proud of what you have created. Information is what the internet is all about.
PS I still use AT to test connectivity to the internet on various servers and computers. It is unlikely to be cached by a user, and I may just eyeball a good read.
Wow. It's been a long time. I remember reading your reviews on the BH6 and the AX6BC Pro Gold all those years ago. It's been so long I have even lost my original user name and email address. Feeling a strange sadness.

All I have to say is, thank you for creating AnandTech. I was never really an avid follower of this site until recently, but it was due to the extremely detailed multi-paged reviews of everything tech related that kept me coming back. They are truly second to none. I also love the idea of the "Bench" section. Sometimes, it's hard to find a comparison on two very specific GPUs or other hardware, but AnandTech's Bench section makes it really easy.
There's a lot more I can say about this site, but overall, I just really thank you for creating site that puts out quality articles with quality information. You are still a very young 32 years old, so I wish you the best with your future endeavors.
I remember the first time I saw the AnandTech logo appearing on a motherboard box back in late 90's when they used to have computer shows. I have been happily following you since then and have learned a lot over the years. Can't imagine the numbers of articles I've read. This is one of my favorite site and will continue to be so. Firstly, Thanks for all what you have given us in way of unbiased tech reporting. Anandtech is the yardstick to which every other tech publication should measure themselves to. Your reviews have always been the 'go to' standard and I hope the new team can maintain that standard. Your efforts in ensuring manufacturers produce quality products have impacted consumers worldwide. I will definitely miss your input but I hope you will still make guest appearances when possible. I'm a newbie here at Anandtech, but I've been enthusiastic about tech (PCs in particular) since I was 6-7 years old in the mid-90s. However, this has faded recently, and a lot of that had to do with the feeling that for all the articles and news I read, I didn't learn anything but spec sheets and PR speak. Discovering AnandTech (I've read the odd article here throughout the years, but never became a regular reader) has completely changed this, and I feel like I've learned more through the past few months than I have probably in the past five years. Thank you, Anand, for setting the standard for insightful, well-researched, highly technical yet utterly understandable and engaging articles. Thank you for making sure tech reporting is more than "How many PCMarks does the new Intel CPU score?" Thank you for giving me an understanding of the technical aspects of computers far beyond anything I'd ever imagined possible outside of actually getting a computer science degree - and for showing me how horrendously little I know.Thank you, and the best of luck!

Anand, I remember like it was yesterday when your site was first up and our definitive guide to modding. My friend and I used your Intel upgrade guide and motherboard reviews to figure out when we'd sell our old CPUs and get the "next best CPU" at the computer trade shows in Santa Barbara. For all your help, thank you. There are a few pioneers who have a huge influence, and you, sir, made a positive history within the world of DIY PC building.

Back in 1997 when I started my career in IT, it was Tom's Hardware and Anandtech that I browsed on 33.6k Dialup. Anandtech became my go-to site, however. It was made by a kid and it was great! Plus, I lived and worked near his hometown, so there was some allegiance 'built-in'. Today, still one of my regularly frequented sites - I'll always be a loyal 'follower'. Thank you Anand!

Hey Anand, I just registered specially to thank you - and your team - for your great work over the years. I hope you end up doing what you love to do, though if you end up working at some fruity company who need to be hit with the clue stick from time to time, don't spare the clue stick!
But, the anandtech.com philosphy was the build-it-yourself individual who wanted total control of their hardware PC. This is completely the opposite of the Apple view of the world.

Back then my go to sites for any computer hardware reviews were Anandtech and Tom's Hardware. Today I still come to Anandtech for your in depth analyses and reviews. I KNOW what you say is true and trust your reviews 100%. I can't say that for any other sites out there. Started out building crappy 486 and Pentium processor machines in my early teens and now I'm in the IT field as a Network/Systems Administrator. I am glad to say that a lot of what I know I learned from your site.

My first encounter with your site was in 1998, when I was sophmore in college. I was building my first custom rig with an overclocked Celeron 300A. I was scouring your site (among a few others) for information on what motherboards and other components to buy, settings to use, etc. The memory of the first time that rig powered up stable at 450mhz and was able to run my N64 emulator (unplayable at 300mhz) smoothly still brings a smile to my face. To me, you were that kid with his own tech web site. Seeing you grown up and moving on is making me feel old (...because we are). Best of luck with your next endeavor Anand. I remember as if it were yesterday when you concluded a review with "I have yo get some rest because I have an AP exam tomorrow" back when you were in high school. That was the first time I realized you were just a kid writing some of the most well written and deeply insightful technical articles I had ever read. I have been a fan ever since. Its a sad day to see SharkeyExtreme then Anandtech and Now HardOCP the last of the three original founders of the underground net authorities leaving what they started. Its truly an end of a ERA where it all began. Only those of us who where there when it all started will truly remember and appreciate what it all meant. Wow, good sign off and thanks for basically the only site I go to for understanding the actual workings of modern silicon (and whatever might replace it).In 1997 I was doing a 4th grade science project on RISC vs CISC processing architecture. And while I might have grown more interested in physics and etc. since then, it's still wonderful to be able to come to Anandtech and learn something about computer engineering every once in a while. I've been reading your site on and off ever since 1998 or so when I was a kid a couple years younger than yourself. Whenever I come back it is because I want to know what the state of the consumer hardware industry is, and I know there is no better site for original in-depth analysis, and most importantly, sane and balanced writing. In the 90's, I remember stumbling on to this page of the web, run by a kid who was reviewing a new motherboard. I was so impressed with the review, that I ended up purchasing the motherboard and found the motherboard every bit as “hot” as this kid said it was. I can't believe that this is the end of an era. I think I have been following this site since just after its move off of geocities (I remember reading articles here from my freshman year in college, which would have been '98 in). I also remember the old forums before the end of October 99 when we were all needed to recreate accounts. The community here was truly built by your dedication and passion for getting us the best information as you knew it and keeping us up to date with the latest hardware releases. Back in those days, finding a place that really kept up with the changing hardware market was hard to find (well, not really, as there were only 2-3 good sources, but search engines were still not very good or comprehensive (in fact google did not even exist yet)).I think I can say with many people here that we will miss your insights and pull that you had within the hardware industry. Over the years that pull is what resolved many serious issues, from consumers being abandoned by manufacturers when fatal bugs were found, to firmware being fixed, to flat out lies and misrepresentation of information spreading about certain hardware capabilities. I hope the new team can continue the good work you created and continued all these years (they have very big shoes that are now missing which can never be filled, but simply stood upon to hopefully continue the work).

Just technology-wise, there have been so many things over the years that you have had a positive impact on. One that comes to mind is your impact on SSD performance, the initial craze for maximum sequential speed at the expense of random IO that often led to stuttering, etc. and pushing manufacturers to deliver overall performance. I'd also say you've had a huge impact on mobile as well. I loved looking forward to your articles explaining how tech works at a low level and what design choices have to be considered on CPUs, SSDs, dissecting, analyzing and searching for answers on things like the architecture for Apple's various new SoC over the years, and countless other things. I've been a fan since the early days. '97-'98 Seems about right. I met you(Anand) at a computer big box store in the Raliegh. I think it was CompUSA. I was shopping with a friend for his new video card. He was insisting on getting an S3 card I think. I was telling him about 3Dfx and how they where changing things. I can't remember exactly how the conversation started with Anand but he told me about his website and said I should check it out. I've been coming back ever since. Wow. End of an era. I missed all the shake ups at Tom's, Sharky, Inquirer, etc. So this is "a first" for me. I've been at OCZ for over 10 years now. Pretty much everything I've learned about computers, I REALLY learned reading AT. I think I read The SSD Anthology at least 50 times. You are the reason I know what an SSD is and does and how it should behave. Not to mention you single handedly changed OCZ SSD firmware, warranties, and customer service initiatives.I know you've been doing this for over 17 years, but I will kindly thank you for 10 of those. Before that, I couldn't name one component inside a computer...a sad existence!
I'm sad you are leaving this crazy world but I'm more sad this post didn't mention your favorite product you tested over the last 17 years...the OCZ "brain mouse." ;)

I don't know how long I've read AnandTech. I know I started early in college (which I started in 1996) so it must have been very early on. I still recall one of our professors telling us in 1999 in our class on computer hardware that we should just read AnandTech and we'd ace the class. As someone that already was a reader, he was certainly right about that.Years later, as my wife pursued her PhD at UNC, I still recall being amazed that one of my fellow programmers went to high school with Anand. At that point I had no idea that a couple years later I would start writing for the site as well.
The example Anand set has given all of us that write here something to strive for. I will never know as much about CPUs or SSDs that Anand does, but he helped me understand them better than I ever did before. We all have a lot to live up to here now, and we're all going to do as much as we can to do so.

I can honestly say I'm sad to see you go but I understand your reason. I have been reading AnandTech for as long as you've been posting on it through a 2400 Baud modem to the suprisingly not light years better broad band connection from TW Cable and I can only feel like a little bit of my memory from those days is fading away.My hope is that this site will continue to be what it has always been, a truly independent review of everything tech and not a business trend to follow and abuse for profit.

Came here for the tech, then got emotional when I saw that cover photo - it could mean only one thing. I have been an avid reader of this site since forever. It helped shape my love and interest in technology and hardware. I have frequented this site almost daily for over a decade because of the quality of writing and unbiased attitude. When you started covering Macs more, I was really excited (as a life long Mac user). I went from a novice to one who is quite proficient with modern technology. As a person who has followed this site, since way back when it first came up. I can safely say I'm sorry to see you go, and you will definitely be missed.I remember reading about things like the Abit mobo's, during the K6 and K7 days on this site, like the KT7A, KT133 and 133A. And even back before I took an interest in AMD, the slot based Pentium 2's. Also chose many a board back then based on reviews on this site. SL2YK P2 300, was the thing way back then, and I had one, first on a Shuttle Hot 440LX board, and then an Abit 440BX. All of which were reviewed on this site.
I hope even though you're leaving the site manages to remain as impartial to brand as it always has, except a few occasions depending on the writer. Which is one of the biggest reasons I've came here first for review over other sites.

So, it happens. FINALLY, the sale of an Internet Property that we've all seen coming for a long time now. It's like the 54 square acres of farmland smack-dab in the middle of Boomtown Middle America Tract Housing that previously just "refused to sell because my father bought this land in 1852...."
I guess the offer finally had enough zeros at the back of it, eh? Don't blame you. Smart business says that "You have to know when it's time to move on to other things." That time is now, apparently. AT and the forums will be dead in the next 30 days. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's wondered how you have justified keeping the forums up and running for so long.

I stumbled upon the site in 1999 trying to find info on motherboards when I was building my first PC. The articles impressed me both with the technical detail (I had little idea that a motherboard even did much besides connecting things and delivering electrical power) and the joyful enthusiasm in the approach. Somehow that got me coming back, the technical level of the articles keeping the connection between otherwise-forgotten courses in computer engineering and the accomplishments of modern industry, and the enthusiasm maintaining my excitement about them. Dear Anand,Beyond the daily dose of tech (needless, but still OK to add, this site is all my browsers' home page for years), I never thought I should or would write so seriously here about anything as -
a) the site has been so US-centric that some comment from India would never be treated worth whatever it is, mainly by the big companies (market ??), and hence the people at the site itself.
b) this really comes as a shock and so probably would never have crossed the mind even in its craziest states.
I take this opportunity to thank you for whatever you and 'your' (yeah, even with Ryan or someone else it will always be your) site have been to me all these years too, just like you've said through all the knowledge as well as the actual process of sharing it. Its truly beyond words.
I also wish to put here my request to extend anandtech to .in as our country is taking big strides into the future, may be with all other nations, but with a decisive determined frame of mind. We have just effected a massive positive change in the overall governance of public life and that should in every manner possible be, at the very least, conducive to such attempt.
I had in my small capacity as an individual tried to raise certain issues when they bothered us here but the network of manufacturers, dealers and distributors refused to pay any heed. An entity combining all these small individual voices into a major force could do the trick for a good cause to Indian consumers too, if something of that nature takes place here.
Before it gets too long, let me stop here.

(A little preference for Intel from the beginning and especially the last few years, can be forgotten due to the large performance gap between Intel and AMD CPUs, but I would like a little more criticism to Intel on bad choices or actions i.e for the packaging of CPUs after Sandy)

I remember the first article I came to Anandtech for in high school, an article on goldfingers for the K6 ;) Anand and I being only 11 days apart in age, I reflect a lot on how the site has evolved over the years, and how I myself have evolved in tech. I've read\checked Anandtech\Dailytech for updates almost every day for the last 15+ years because it's always been my source for professional tech news with integrity.Many have come and gone, I used to read HardOCP, Tom's Hardware, Storage Review, and still occasionally check Engadget, but Anandtech is everyday.

I've been noticing for the past two years an unusual amount of new faces around here, and I didn't know what to expect; I guess everything makes sense now. In any case, I've not only been an AT reader, but a big fan of yours since 02'-03'. I visit 2-3 other similar sites for hardware reviews, but whenever new hardware comes to the market, I always value more the AT version of the benchmark hands down, and that has a lot to do with you. I am deeply saddened that you are "retiring" from the site, although I am pretty sure you'll end up in a nice position at <insert here any monster IT of a company>. I hope everything works out alright for the site(unfortunately there are sites similar to AT, which didn't make it after their creator stepped down, or their quality suffered considerably) and for you personally. I began writing about tech not much time after you, and since I discovered AnandTech in the early 2000s it became absolutely essential both my amusement, my interests, and my own job. The depth and technical insight you set as one of the pillars of AT have been differential and pivotal in my (and I guess everyone who has read AnandTech over the years) understanding of how tech has evolved over the years.I know how difficult it is to build a strong audience and to maintain the quality of a tech site for so long, so I can't only say how proud I am of you and your team's work. You've done an amazing job throughout the years and it's really incredible how AT has been able to keep itself as a beacon of tech knowledge when other strong tech sites with far less technical depth have attracted other kind of tech users.

So long Anand! I remember my first foray to internet tech sites in 1998/1999 during the celeron 300a oc to 450 craze. I gravtited here and to Toms. I don't know when but somewhere along the way I stopped checking Toms and started coming here almost exclusively, for the objective and in depth analysis you provided and still provide in a diverse number of tech subjects.Good luck with your future endeavors!

I remember when Sharky and Voodoo Extreme were around, big in their day, and I think it's amazing you've done so well as you have, maintaining some semblance of yourself in the process. Up until you "discovered" Apple products, you were an incredible reviewer of enthusiast technology and upgrades, a reliable source of information. Even now, there are reviewers you've hired that are incredible writers in their own right.By chance, are you going to work for AMD? Given AMD's hiring habits of late and Anandtech's close relationship to AMD, it wouldn't shock me.

I found this site after the move from Geocities and have been a regular reader since. There was a guy standing next to me, which used to be a former writer at AT and we were talking about Anand and truly how great he is.
I told him that for me, Anand is a legend (and a live one at the age of 32) ! not many can say that about themselves.
Anandtech has been my #1 tech site for as long as I can remember, when I truly wanted all the detailed tech material that no one else in the this industry can seem to provide, at least not in the AT style.
Anand, I know that you are the main reason for that and it's why a lot of the reviews and articles here have been both incredibly interesting and even inspiring: to dig deeper and to push our knowledge further.
You will be surely missed Anand, good luck in your new course in life, whatever it may be. :)

No pandering, no click-bait and over-promising headlines a clean and structured appearance, level headed approach and respectful attitude towards the readership. Big detailed analysis instead of infotainment, rumor-mill and distraction. A useful comparison tool with Bench. I really hope that Anand's success will continue and inspire successful imitators.Of course there are always ways to improve testing and analysis of what seems to be an almost infinitely complex subject, I hope that the new AT will still strive to advance testing and streamline the presentation of results, with more meta and statistical analysis.
Considering just how much the press depends on the industry and how difficult the position of tech sites really is, what we've got on page and between the lines is not bad, not bad at all. It's truly a shame that tech-reporting requires so much traveling.

Man, I can't tell you how (perhaps surprisingly) sad that makes me. Like many others I've been coming here almost since you started and have come to rely on you both as my primary reference and bringer of truth and justice to the PC hardware business. Those are indeed big shoes to fill and the editorial team sure have their work cut out for them. They're not quite there yet. hope you'll have the time to continue guiding them. However, I fully support your decision - you've already given so much more than could be expected to both the community and the industry. The end of an era, the last individualistic holdout in an era of glossy filler material and "reviews" consisting of little more than unboxings and spec listings. I only found AT about 10 years ago... I got sick of the astroturfing on TH and looked around for something else, something better...I visit the site two or three times a week, unless I'm looking for an upgrade or a new build and then I visit every day, reading old articles and reviews and checking out Bench. I haven't made a hardware purchase without checking first on AT since my AGP 7600.

I've followed Anandtech since the very beginning (literally, since I was 12). I am 30 and grew up in a rural area with very few "geeks" to interact with and Anandtech had a profound influence on my interests in technology. I used the information on this site to build my first computer, to help my friends and family with their devices, and to become the all around tech support guru that they rely on. I have never been active on the forums or in comments, but I really want to thank you, Anand, for all you have contributed. I wish you the best of luck. I have been a regular visitor to this website since I was 14. As a young boy, I would look forward to reading your deeply analytical articles on new technologies like new CPU architectures or SSDs. I will miss seeing your name at the top of the page but like you said, you have left the website in good hands. I remember early on when you first started letting others write the main articles, I could tell that it was Anand's writing. Halfway through the first page, I would quickly scroll to the top and see that Ananad's name wasn't there. At first I was disappointed but with time, the new writers have achieved the same quality if not better that Anandtech always strives for. Anand,I've been reading you since the beginning. I'm also very close in age to you (I'm a little older :) ). Your site and the early days of Tom's Hardware sent me off on a journey of building my own computer, installing the first generation of 3D graphics cards, and expanding beyond programming into electrical engineering. I now work in industry at a company whose products you've reviewed.
I want you to know that your site has always been the best (particularly the articles you authored). When other sites started to cater specifically to Intel or AMD crowds, I could count on your articles to be honest assessments. I think you're also picking a good time to try something new -- the componentized PC industry appears to be slowing, and whether it's internet software or deeply integrated computers like phones or wearables, the DIY days of computing are slowly fading. I hope rather than completely retiring, you will apply your skills in the tech industry where you can have even greater impact.
Email me if you are interested in an introduction into a big industry player who you probably haven't heard of and isn't likely to be commoditized anytime soon. :)

With processor advancement and so much tech growth...Ur site has really kept pace.

I grew up leafing through the pages of PC World, Byte and other computer magazines in the 70s and 80s, graduated to bulletin boards and Compuserve, and then came the World Wide Web. For me, this was too slow to do much in the way of surfing until around 1996 or so, and it can't have been long after that that I came across Anandtech.Those were exciting times, and you were a pioneer of what became possible in that new forum for communication and the dissemination of ideas.
Thanks for working so hard on the reviews. Your determination to find objective ways to differentiate between competing products made this site a reference point for consumers across the World, and was a benign influence on the whole PC and, later, mobile technology industries.
In keeping with your philosophical approach to criticism, I will add that the forums seem to have died a little sinced the late 90s, early 2000s period, but perhaps this was a consequence of wider choice across the internet (social media), and the maturity or decline of the traditional PC industry and the Wintel platform.

At the beginnings I used to go in web-cafes and download articles (print/save) on floppies to read at my leisure at home where I had no internet back in those days. Back in the 2000's the knowledge gathered on your site allowed me to build a nice computer-building business which made me some coins during college and now a few years later I can say I'm still a bit of a computer guru for friends and family. I still remember in 2005 when I noticed for the first time the reference to acceleration of MPEG-4 video encoding/decoding in the description of the ATI radeon x700. I spent a couple of weeks discussing what that means at an unofficial ATI forum, at no avail. Before giving up, I wrote to Anand requesting information regarding video acceleration on GPUs. No reply, and I thought at least I gave it a shot.A couple of months later, Anand wrote for the first time on the web (AFAIK) an amazing article about GPU-accelerated video encoding, a concept no one explored before at any depth, and later exclusively got a beta tool for video encoding from ATI, not released previously anywhere.
I still remember the best tech-oriented bed story for geeks, the behind-the-scenes success story of the AMD 4000HD series (The RV770 Story). And I still hope for another, equally exciting bed story.
Anand, you have no idea how much respect I have for you. I'm sad that you are leaving. With that said, I am happy that you decided to do whatever makes you happy, and I wish you the best of luck in your future.

That reminds me how I got *my* 80287 (and Windows 1.0) for free: Bought a whopping 1.5megabyte Intel Above board (for the equivalent of a small car).

This site has been, for a long time, my first port of call for reliable technology information. Even where other sites have appeared handling certain specific topics more thoroughly - graphics cards, for instance, or acoustics - Anandtech has always managed to provide a generalist overview with some seriously heavy insights of its own into topics such as CPU design. The transition to being the first and best site providing a proper, weighty insight into mobile technology happened so seamlessly that I barely noticed it happen. I remain extremely appreciative for it.So, thank you, Anand. Thank you for bringing us this site, nurturing it, and sending it off out into the world to continue your work.

I came to AT pretty late, around the time you posted the "definitive" SSD backgrounders, which is probably a big loss for me: Looks like you could have filled the gap that BYTE left.I'm not so sure I like the idea of you going to Apple: Last "Apple" I ever owned was a Apple ][ clone, because it was the perfect DIY computer.
For a techie there is nothing in an Apple unless you get to build them (which is what you'll get to do now ;-)
Problem I see there, though, that there is no such thin as a perfect computer: There is only a perfect computer for any given use case.
I guess the biggest problem with your new job will be having to compromise all the time: Having to build a rather low fixed number of compromises (for the largest possible customer base), which will always leave you yearning for the truly perfect device.

1) All CE is perfect for a given use case. You building your own "PC" is for your specific use case.2) How exactly do you build your own notebook, tablet, smartphone, and (perhaps) wearables? Sure, it's technically possible, but it's unrealistic to think that DIYers aren't buying these complete products from the vendor of their choice.

Thanks for all the hard work you've done for us over the years. It feels like just a few years ago that I found your website and tried to find out which 440BX motherboard to buy (ended up with Abit BH6) for my Pentium II.Now I was looking forward to reading about the inner workings of A8 next week or in the coming months (and I hated mobile until we got good smartphones). I guess that'll have to wait. I really really hope someone is able to pick up the torch on that one :-)

I feel strange nostalgic melancholy reading this announcement. I've been a reader of Anandtech almost from the day it started. I immediately appreciated the level of no nonsense technical breakdowns that formed the basis of all your reviews. I immediately trusted the integrity of this site to not sell out and to present honest opinions of the tech being reviewed even if it meant telling us the ugly truth. I'm sad you are going Anand but I will certainly keep supporting the site, as you rightly acknowledge, for a long time now this site has been as much and probably more about the team of people you brought together than it has been about you. Best of luck to you Anand!I started reading your reviews in 97 and built my first computer with the information from your blog. I was amazed at the quality of the information back then and I still am today. Now I work fulltime with IT and AnandTech has been an invaluable source of information.
You helped me steer clear of Celeron which was new in 97 or 98 and you saved me a ton of trouble with your SSD-coverage in the last few years. You will be missed! But I will not give up on AnandTech, that is a promise.

I've been a reader (and avid fan) of this site since just before the turn of the century, and I have stuck with this site not only because of the deep understanding of the tech that the writers bring to the table, but also for the excellent writing that they use to convey their findings with. At a time when most review sites were just comparing video cards by seeing which one had a higher FRAPS score in Quake, AnandTech was able to explain (clearly) why and how one video card was faster than another. I also really enjoy how much I can get from the comments on most articles. It's a testament to the quality of the writers and articles that the comments sections in an AnandTech review doesn't devolve into a "you guys are just a bunch of *insert brand here* fanboys!" I thank you for bringing a superior level of excellence to the internet, and for maintaining it for 17.5 years!I look forward to another 17.5 years of quality learning ahead of me. 1997, huh? I cannot recall for sure when I first tuned in, but it seems as though it was at the very beginning of AnandTech. Like everyone posting here, I'm grateful beyond words for your providing me with a site that has, since its inception, been my go-to authority on everything PC.I finally decided that Microsoft committed such a "crime against computerdom" with the fiasco known as Windows 8, that I left the fold and transitioned myself completely back to Apple (desktop, laptops, tablets, and phones) after 23 years as a PC aficionado and builder. I therefore won't miss your presence here, Anand, as much as most of my fellow geeks, but my gratitude for your mountains of help over the last 17 years will be as great as theirs.

I started reading anandtech, tomshardware, arstechnica, hardocp, aceshardware, sysopt, and many of the other great tech sites back in 1998. Many have disappeared entirely or faded into near-irrelevance (toms). It sucks to see Anand move away from the press side of things because he was someone you could always trust to look out for consumers. His site reflected that approach while still carrying enough industry clout that he was able to get yet-to-be-released products ahead of review embargo and produce critical reviews that negated company PR spin.
Anandtech has been a major catalyst for multiple product recalls and price drops over the years, so seeing Anand shift to the other side and working for a single company is disconcerting. His critics will probably point to this job transition as proof he was drinking the Apple kool aid, but I think The Kid continually displayed more integrity than that, even when taking AMD money for their own subsection on his site. Hopefully the groundwork laid for his former site's future can continue with a strong consumer-oriented focus without losing credibility, as happened to tomshardware after the doctor sold out.
Anand thanks for the wild and interesting ride along with saving me money versus poor puchases. You went from The Kid, to Boy Wonder to Old Man Hermit. Ya even made Intel quiver more than once. Bet your 17 year old self never saw that one coming. Cheers.

Has it been that long?I remember my first exposure to the AMD line of server CPU's named Opteron on this site. I've always cherished the balance of content and advert, and the succinct, informative content that that AT maintained while other sites declined into advertorial.
This may not be Google, Apple or Microsoft but nonetheless you should be proud of what you have created. Information is what the internet is all about.

All I have to say is, thank you for creating AnandTech. I was never really an avid follower of this site until recently, but it was due to the extremely detailed multi-paged reviews of everything tech related that kept me coming back. They are truly second to none. I also love the idea of the "Bench" section. Sometimes, it's hard to find a comparison on two very specific GPUs or other hardware, but AnandTech's Bench section makes it really easy.There's a lot more I can say about this site, but overall, I just really thank you for creating site that puts out quality articles with quality information. Firstly, Thanks for all what you have given us in way of unbiased tech reporting. Anandtech is the yardstick to which every other tech publication should measure themselves to. Your reviews have always been the 'go to' standard and I hope the new team can maintain that standard. Your efforts in ensuring manufacturers produce quality products have impacted consumers worldwide. I will definitely miss your input but I hope you will still make guest appearances when possible. I can't wait to hear about it!I'm a newbie here at Anandtech, but I've been enthusiastic about tech (PCs in particular) since I was 6-7 years old in the mid-90s. However, this has faded recently, and a lot of that had to do with the feeling that for all the articles and news I read, I didn't learn anything but spec sheets and PR speak. Discovering AnandTech (I've read the odd article here throughout the years, but never became a regular reader) has completely changed this, and I feel like I've learned more through the past few months than I have probably in the past five years. Thank you, Anand, for setting the standard for insightful, well-researched, highly technical yet utterly understandable and engaging articles. Thank you for making sure tech reporting is more than "How many PCMarks does the new Intel CPU score?" Thank you for giving me an understanding of the technical aspects of computers far beyond anything I'd ever imagined possible outside of actually getting a computer science degree - and for showing me how horrendously little I know.Thank you, and the best of luck!

Anand,I remember like it was yesterday when your site was first up and our definitive guide to modding. My friend and I used your Intel upgrade guide and motherboard reviews to figure out when we'd sell our old CPUs and get the "next best CPU" at the computer trade shows in Santa Barbara. Back in 1997 when I started my career in IT, it was Tom's Hardware and Anandtech that I browsed on 33.6k Dialup. Anandtech became my go-to site, however. It was made by a kid and it was great! Plus, I lived and worked near his hometown, so there was some allegiance 'built-in'. Today, still one of my regularly frequented sites - I'll always be a loyal 'follower'. Anand, it's been a pleasure reading your site and your articles for over 15 years now. It's been exceptionally educational and has guided many a PC build or upgrade I've made.This site has been truly one of a kind. There are other sites I've read on and off (I still recall SharkyExtreme, StorageReview, and HardOCP back in the day), but none with as much frequency, nor delivering as much value, knowledge, and professionalism in its content. And without a doubt, that is why AT has been so successful.
I wish you the very best in your future endeavors, and will always remember your work with AnandTech fondly. Sad to see you depart but excited to see what lies ahead, both for your career and for AnandTech.

The Apple philosophy is interesting.But, the anandtech.com philosphy was the build-it-yourself individual who wanted total control of their hardware PC. This is completely the opposite of the Apple view of the world.

Oh no... ='(I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. I have been a loyal reader for the last 15 years. I have learned so much from your site, more than any classroom can teach. Back then my go to sites for any computer hardware reviews were Anandtech and Tom's Hardware. Today I still come to Anandtech for your in depth analyses and reviews. I KNOW what you say is true and trust your reviews 100%. I can't say that for any other sites out there.
Started out building crappy 486 and Pentium processor machines in my early teens and now I'm in the IT field as a Network/Systems Administrator. I am glad to say that a lot of what I know I learned from your site.
It will be sad to see you go.

My first encounter with your site was in 1998, when I was sophmore in college. I was building my first custom rig with an overclocked Celeron 300A. I was scouring your site (among a few others) for information on what motherboards and other components to buy, settings to use, etc. The memory of the first time that rig powered up stable at 450mhz and was able to run my N64 emulator (unplayable at 300mhz) smoothly still brings a smile to my face. To me, you were that kid with his own tech web site. Seeing you grown up and moving on is making me feel old (...because we are). Best of luck with your next endeavor Anand. Its a sad day to see SharkeyExtreme then Anandtech and Now HardOCP the last of the three original founders of the underground net authorities leaving what they started. Its truly an end of a ERA where it all began. Only those of us who where there when it all started will truly remember and appreciate what it all meant. It was a time like no other and it seems just like yesterday when it all began. It is a sad day to see it all changing. ~GL to you all....
