Having used some of the finished Android L Material Apps in the Developer Preview (namely the Calculator and Dialer apps), for me the animations distinguish Material from Holo. The ripple effect on button presses and complex animations drastically change the experience of the app but aren't really made clear in the screenshots. While this redesign adopts some of the changes in whitespace and hero images that Material Design suggests, the lack of dynamics in the interaction with the app doesn't give it a Material feel at all.
