    re: QNAP HS-210

Yes it looks good. Bunch of Engadgeters commented that it should play movies too. Obviously it's a NAS not an HTPC but the thing is it's so darned expensive. At £250, you could practically buy a small x86 pc acting as media player *and* media server so I kind of take their point. Maybe I'm missing something but regardless the pretty design, the price needs to be a lot lower.

I would prefer to see a 2.5inch front loading NAS with swing open door slit covered by small holes for ventilation and using small low speed fans doing airflow over the disks and CPU in order to function nicely. Having a totally closed fanless unit would mean high temps for the disk and it cannot mean long life for those spinning 1TB/2TB units in there!.

The article states they're targeting SSD usage, not spinning disks.

Temps are a non issue with an SSD/s installed. 2.5" drives are not too terrible on temps. At the price why not cheaper, large SSDs. I don't think this would likely be for me though.

No problem, the top of the HS-210 is an aluminum heat sink.

All NAS untis are extremely overpriced. The only thing they have going for them is that they are tiny. You can't build such a tiny NAS yourself because there aren't any such board or cases available or then it's just as expensive.

You're paying for the size, noise, and power profile here. Of course you could build an HP Microserver for the same sort of price, and it's still pretty compact with a faster CPU and 4+ drive bays. But it will make more noise (fans), draw more power.
