So ~700 dollars, realistically once things settle. I sense a Titan price drop incoming, if this really does trounce it like they're saying. I'd be hesitant about a preorder though until it's reviewed, of course, even if I did have that much money to drop on a video card when things at a third the price run most current games fine :)

  • Pontius - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

Cool specs, but for me they are missing the most important thing.

The only thing I'm interested in at the moment is OpenCL computing. For anyone who has worked with it, you'll know that the single most important thing is not computing power, but memory bandwidth. Even with a bigger memory bus, accessing main video memory is very slow. The only way to mitigate this is with the on-chip local memory cache. The amount of such has been very small in nVidia cards and even smaller in AMD cards. This has to be remedied at some point for GPU computing to really take off and I was hoping these new cards would provide more local memory. Any info on that would be great. Thanks.
  • Flunk - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

The question really is, is this that much faster than the Radeon 7970? I've seen 7970s going as low at $260, so the real question is if this new card is much faster than 2x 7970s and $230 in pocket money.
  • Homeles - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

How is that "the real question?" AMD would have to essentially break the laws of physics in order to triple the performance of their previous flagship card on the same manufacturing process.

I don't know why so many people fail to grasp the fact that premium products sell for premium prices. High end products invariably offer less for your dollar than mainstream products, and that goes for nearly every industry out there, too.

The real question is why you're asking that question.

Look at the GTX 780. Its MSRP is $650. This thing is faster than the 780. Therefore, it makes sense for it to cost more.

If you're concerned at how much something costs, you shouldn't even be looking at the 290X. This is not a bang-for-your-buck card -- flagship cards *never* are.
  • azixtgo - Friday, October 4, 2013 - link

Lots of problems with your comment I think.

    1. this is the only new thing from amd. Some people won't want to buy their other cards that are 2 years old. Especially with all the changes being made with new consoles coming out etc.

    2. This r9 290x is high end only because of where the two companies are. I am really suspecting they are price-fixing or staggering their releases. AMD has had these cards out for TWO years and they are still relevant. Since when has it been that way? It may be a side effect of the manufacturing processes that are available. AMD is definitely going south right now as far as their pricing goes. They are back to ATI days. They are back to the $600, $700 single card ways and not in a good way.

A point related to the above... 3) is that this R9 290x is what would have been a HD9870 if they hadn't switched up their strategy between the 5000 and 6000 series. Their highend before that used to be dual GPU cards. Then they made the 6970 which was actually what a 6870 would have been. The 6870 ended up as what a 6770 would have been etc... So this 7970 successor is actually no different from an *8** card. Well, maybe 10% more.

Being at the limit or near to it on 28nm maybe means they deserve some leeway, but still. The AMD we could expect to offer value is gone, for now at least.
  • Sabresiberian - Saturday, October 5, 2013 - link

How do you know it's faster than the GTX 780?
  • Da W - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

I would myself go for Dual 7870 or Dual 7950 for 200$ Can each. Microsuttering made me wait for R290X. I know my games will just work in eyefinity.
  • inighthawki - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

People will pay a lot of money to have the performance in a single card. Those that either dislike SLI/Crossfire setups but still want the perf, or maybe they are planning on getting 2x 290X. This is the way manufacturers have sold every product since the beginning of time. The higher end the device, the larger the profit margins are.
  • just4U - Saturday, October 5, 2013 - link

They appear to be hovering in the 330+ range for the ghz edition. Where have you seen them for 260? I've yet to see one listed at that price.

AMD's been "messing up the price" for every GCN GPU launch with the sole exception of the 7790. Don't get your hopes up.

Wait for prices to settle. There's no doubt that this thing is going to cost far too much at launch -- these kinds of cards always do.

    R9 280X trading blows with a $380-450 GTX770 is nothing disappointing.

    http://videocardz.com/46162/msi-radeon-r9-280x-gam...

BF4 performance of 770 is lackluster for the price:
    http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Battlefield-4-PC-238...

NV will needs price drops on 770 yesterday....
  • Sabresiberian - Saturday, October 5, 2013 - link

It's disappointing in that the 280X isn't anything new, it's a toned down version of the 7970 GHz (and neither is the GTX 770, which is just a tweaked 680, but at least it is an improved version of a previous card, and not a lower performance version).

I haven't seen an announced price for it, either, so don't know why you think Nvidia needs to drop their prices before the AMD card is even released.
  • extide - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

That is really weird, pre-order date BEFORE you can even see a review online?? That doesnt make sense at all....
  • tackle70 - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

They are milking their fanboys just like Nvidia did when they priced their Titan at a laughable $1k
  • HisDivineOrder - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

But... there were reviews of that...
  • tackle70 - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

reviews which showed quite clearly that it wasn't worth anywhere near the $1k asking price for gaming
  • nathanddrews - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

They're taking a bit out of the Apple playbook with the ignorant preorders - NVIDIA had the decency to reveal pricing and performance first.

The rumored $599 would be ideal. $599 is the current price of the 7990, which all but obliterates Titan in FPS and compute... will 290X be faster than 7990? Even with the issues that sometimes crop up with CF, I still wouldn't pay more to get less...
  • dragonsqrrl - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

woosh... went right over your head.
  • dylan522p - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

To be fair, the Titan was a very capable entry level workstation card.
  • HisDivineOrder - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

It's marketing tricks, of course. They don't want the card being bogged down with little things like, "It won this benchmark, it lost that benchmark." They release just enough to make people think it's going to blow Titan away and then drop a price down that is worse than 780 which is more closely aligned (it's closer to 780 than it is Titan in everything but apparently price).

Then when you find out differently, it's too late. You're stuck with that R9 290X either way.
  • silverblue - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

There's no guarantee that the 290 will perform nearer the 780 - a couple of "leaked" benchmarks doesn't really mean much.
  • Homeles - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

Have you forgotten that the Titan is barely any faster than the 780?

If you've somehow come to the conclusion that this card will be slower than the 780, your deductive reasoning abilities could use a rework.
  • silverblue - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

I think he's saying that the 290X (I forgot the X earlier) will drop price to nearer 780 levels, but the 780 will have better performance for the price regardless.

Well, we'll see come launch day how this thing performs.
  • RussianSensation - Saturday, October 5, 2013 - link

Doubtful. 780's performance in BF4 is already very poor for the price. R9 290X should beat it here without issues and with Mantle, it might get much worse:
    http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Battlefield-4-PC-238...

In games like Tomb Raider, COH2 and Crysis 3, 780 also doesn't perform particularly faster than 7970Ghz. R9 290X should be very competitive in those titles. There aren't many other demanding games I can think of off the top of my head.
  • Will Robinson - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

I hope I get "stuck with" a card that blows away NVDA's finest...
Guess you are looking forward to trolling the Mantle launch as well eh?
  • RussianSensation - Saturday, October 5, 2013 - link

Notice how the troll shows up in every pro-AMD/new AMD launch card thread. One must be completely brainwashed to worship the ground NV walks on after their ludicrous $1,000 GTX690 crippled with 2GB of VRAM and $1,000 Titan that is nothing more than a successor to 580 for double the price but but it has with full DP enabled. Ironically, none of the DP compute of 4870/4890/5870/6970/7970 ever came into play for this guy until NV released a $1,000 Titan.
  • tackle70 - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

Pre-ordering a high end graphics card without seeing LOTS of benchmark data is the height of fanboyism and foolishness, in my opinion.
  • fic2 - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

I would think pre-ordering from the site that says the deposit is 99 and we will let you know how much more money you owe us later would be the height of fanboyism.
  • zeock9 - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

MSRP of the card is ~$599 and the game itself won't be more than ~$60,
so what's the effing point of paying much more than that for this simple bundle?

    $730 to pre-order?
    No thank you.
  • Homeles - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

Guarunteeing yourself a card on launch day is worth an additional premium. It's also unlikely that the MSRP is that low, in light of the information in this article.
  • zeock9 - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

Do recall that Nvidia has GTX780 at $650 and AMD can't go above that unless it completely trashes it which I don't think it's capable of from what I've seen - its selling point is 780/titan like performance at a lower price.

So yeah, the MSRP better be about $600.
  • Wreckage - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

$700+ and it may or may not perform as well as a 780 which you can already get for $650.

Even loyal AMD fans have to be pretty upset with this.
  • Homeles - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

It's not going to cost more if it doesn't outperform the 780. That would be completely asinine.
  • Da W - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

7970 launched at a high price because there was no competition from Nvidia for a couple of months. Now there is the 780 at 650$ and the 7990 at 700$, R290X CANNOT go higher than this. In all likelyhood its gonna be cheaper, anticipating that 780 won't stay at 650$ either.
  • Will Robinson - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

If Wreckage and His Divine Odor are upset about it...you can bet your ass 290X is going to be a fine card.
  • RussianSensation - Saturday, October 5, 2013 - link

You bet there will be a lot of butthurt when a 424mm2 chip that has more VRAM trades blows with a 561mm2 NV flagship after all the talking about how Kepler was a far more efficient GPU architecture and that it's not feasible for AMD to release a GPU with much more performance and much larger die than the 365mm2 Tahiti XT.
  • SolMiester - Wednesday, October 9, 2013 - link

Is that like the butt hurt for Eyefinity users with Crossfire and broken drivers after 2 yr release date?
  • garadante - Thursday, October 3, 2013 - link

Uh oh... I'm getting worried that AMD isn't going to enter the market pricing this thing competitively. The way I see the market reacting, something around $550, or even as low as $500, would shake things up a ton and put some fierce competition back on the table, which is good for consumers. If the base price for a standard R9-290X is closer to $700 though, how does this force Nvidia to either slash the prices of their Titan and 780 or release more powerful cards? The 780 gets to Titan levels at $650 (or less), and the rumored leaked benchmarks currently don't give the R9-290X much of a lead over Titan if at all in some titles.

Also, a key question nobody yet knows with any certainty is how the compute will be on this card. Titan is an absolute beast for compute, so if the R9-290X saved die size by stripping out compute units and just went for gaming, that doesn't give Nvidia any reason to cut Titan's pricing. We need to get back down to reasonable flagship card costs, and stop this $1,000 card nonsense.

I'm going to build new rig, at the moment i not to bad pc, with i5 3570k, 8gb 2133mhz corsair pro, gtx 670 non reference card. So build new rig i need very good graphic cards, and to be honest if this r9 290x will be to expensive i better go for a two gtx780 or gtx titans... So its just about the price guys, titan its king of the kings, its not just a name, its brand of monster rigs... To buy amd card it has to be super good and super cheap, other way for few euros or few fps i wont trade nvidia.... So My target at this moment 3 gtx 780 or 2 gtx titans.... But if r9 290x will be priced good i may order 2 or 3 thous gpus... Just waiting for official prices and will buy one or other stuff....

Based on the AMD presentation (http://images.anandtech.com/doci/7368/GPU14-034.jp... isn't it safe to assume the performance of the R9 290X will be ~8000 in Firestrike? The graph shows the other scores that they explicitly mentioned.

I'm not sure how that compares to other existing cards.

I'm a bit superstitious about Nvidia cards since pretty much every one I've owned since I replaced my S3 card with a TNT2 has died! So I'm still waiting for a new, reasonably priced card. My 5870 is starting to struggle at 1920x1200 now, and I think I need a 27" monitor... But I'm really not in the market for a £500 graphics card by any means... I'm sure my 5870 wasn't much more than half that when it was 'high end'.
  • Nocturnal32GB - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

I'm building an AMD gaming rig in November, that said, I'm starting to think that the HD 7990 is really the best bang for your buck as they will STILL be able to out-perform these new R9-290X cards!
  • Will Robinson - Thursday, October 10, 2013 - link

I can't wait to see how Crossfire performs using the PCI bus rather than the external bridge.
I also think R9 290X will be a fair bit cheaper than many have been speculating/trolling.
