lets see 10-20% smaller die area, 400$ cheaper and some faster some slower (as always in the benchmarks depending on game type) not bad i guess for us consumers... but then again some expect it to be overall 50% faster...
I've been saying (ever since Nvidia and Valve teamed up with Steam Linux beta to get performance up to snuff) that Nvidia would likely be the featured GPU vendor in a Valve in-house designed steambox. I *still* think that will end up being the case, but yeah the little tidbit there about Linux has me second guessing myself. Perhaps AMD has finally optimized their drivers and will be teaming up wiht boutique builders to make certified 3rd party steam boxes, but definitely having AMD hardware is a real possibility, and given the timing of both announcements, Nvidia could very well be shut out.
Now that Chris Robert developer of upcoming Star Citizen is on board with the new AMD Hawaii GPUs, you are assured that there are going to be millions of happy gamers this year.
I'd take Hawaii over having it held in smog engulfed LA any day of the week, but then again some people like to breathe as much smog as possible so there's that.
I'm not a fan of the wine-and-dine your reviewers approach, but I'm willing to cut AMD a little slack on this one - after all, we're talking about Hawaii the chip, too, so there's at least some amount of justification to hold the event in the namesake state.
No, it makes perfect sense. the GPU is called Hawaii, and Hawaii is smack dab in the middle of the most important North American and Asian Markets so press from both are equidistant. It's also the off-season for tourism so they're going to be able to leverage off-season rates for hotels and flights.
Why are folks so dour and grumpy? This is a ridiculously silly start to a press junket with tongue firmly planted in cheek by AMD - I mean come on, it's a speech for a GPU on a Hawaiian mountaintop! I appreciate its spirit of lunacy. Are we suppose to prefer a Powerpoint presentation in a windowless conference hall because it's more professional? What happened to the "enthusiasm" in enthusiast?
Can we use comment entries here as auto AMD center giveaway entries? Anyways, I need a replacement for my Asus triple slot 7970, so here's to hoping that AMD has a replacement in the pipeline.
It is crazy and very silly. I was in a bit of disbelief at first. A bit pointless as well? Yes. In the end it is a bit of fun and far better than a powerpoint presentation in a dark room.
The point is to better use the space, e.g. something related to AMD as a company or AMD GPU, but not a person like this. To me Anandtech is one of the best tech sites, Why doing this? For what?

Agreed. But here's hoping that the linux announcement _is_ exciting. I wonder if this has anything to do with the SteamOS.tipoo - Tuesday, September 24, 2013 - link

The whole AMD Center at Anandtech gives me the creeps, but going to Hawaii for a hardware release is pretty bad, too.chrnochime - Tuesday, September 24, 2013 - link

Does this gimmic picture worth this much screen space? A size of 1"x1" should be enough.HisDivineOrder - Tuesday, September 24, 2013 - link
