I expect the next round of iPads will come with 2GB as well.
I AM pleased to see the stereo speakers --- hopefully that will put pressure on Apple to get their act together and deliver decent speakers (both stereo and front facing,not side facing).
The direct-to-device Chromecast scheme is very cute, and I expect will be copied by Apple TV --- it just makes sense. The size of the device is interesting, compared to the size of Apple TV, and makes you wonder what's in Apple TV that requires it be that much larger.
The one surprise (IMHO) is no 802.11ac in the Nexus 7. Do they at least make up for that with 40MHz bands support? I'm disappointed by this because WiFi performance is one of the areas where I feel my iPad is slower than it needs to be so I want the competition to put pressure on Apple. Maybe not 802.11ac yet, but at least - 40MHz support in the 5GHz band AND - a diversity antenna (maybe not full bore 2 stream support, but at least diversity).
I'm confused about about your comment on streaming. Apple TV does not need to copy it. It already has it. YouTube you got it. Streaming from your computer there. Airplay? Yup.
To answer your question about why the Apple TV is so much larger, it contains a power supply. It also has an ethernet port. In addition it contains a system that doesn't have the limitations of Chromecast.
That's it? They held a press conference for that? A video streamer that doesn't do 5ghz or AC..no Amazon Prime. An updated Nexus 7 still sold at cost which has been destroyed by the iPad Mini in sales. Maybe this one won't have all the quality control and speed issues of the last one at least.
Nice to see the spec bump on the Nexus 7, particularly the display. Too bad the processor is last gen though (S4 Pro) and not S600/S800 or Tegra 4.
Nice to see LTE avail. and at reasonable price points for internal storage and LTE antennas too.
Hoping this thing doesn't hiccup and that the app ecosystem for it grows faster.
Chromecast looks promising, and at a cheap price too! We'll see what the reality is but the theory seems very sound and hopefully Apple will learn a trick or two from them.

It boggles my mind that anyone expected S800 (or even S600) in a *budget* tablet. S600 was just top of the line in the Galaxy S4, and there aren't even any S800 shipping devices that I know of. If this was a $500 Nexus 10 refresh then sure, expect the top of the line SOC. The Nexus 7 was created to battle the likes of the Kindle Fire/Nook HD that were using Android at the core and eating Google's lunch in tablet sales all the while funneling users into their own content ecosystems. These devices are (relatively) cheap. It's the same reason the iPad Mini didn't get Swift or a Retina display. They do actually need to make money you know...and in Google's/Asus' case it's not like they have a huge margin on the N7 as it is.
The new Nexus 7 has HDMI out?! Sweet, I think that's something a lot of people wanted. Is it a dedicated micro HDMI port, MHL, or the weird new implementation they had on the Nexus 4?
Is "new Nexus 7" really the name btw? I'm not sure I see much point in wireless charging for a tablet (have we gotten that lazy?), but I'm such a sucker I'll probably get power mat to try it out. :P
