With a spare battery & spare battery charger you can always keep the spare charged. It is a trade-off between carry a bulky phone 24/7 vs the 30 seconds spent every time you swap the battery .
Most certainly easier to stash-n-stow a spare battery+charger than to hulk out your phone with an extended battery. Of course, there's always finding the "convenient" time to actually do the battery swap....
My biggest issue with swapping batteries allot is the back panel pretty quickly degrades in fit. I would use an external battery pack/charger before I would go to a battery swapping solution.
In my experience, you are wrong. I've done hundreds of battery swaps on my galaxy s3 and no noticeable difference in the fit-up of the back cover. The galaxy s4 has the same back cover design.
It works both ways, thinking battery swap is better is the same as commenting cover creak on battery swaps, but yeah they do loosen up because wear & tear.
Ive done both, battery swap & this zerolemon. Both are ok. It's surprising how easy it is to adjust to the weight & the convenience of not swapping 3 full batteries while driving and still being able to swap after that.
You can do 6 hours with continous mobile data, gps, screen (waze) and wifi hotspot on.

I disagree. I swapped batteries on my old HTC Droid Incredible. That phone is extremely chincy compared to the galaxy. The fit never changed over the course of over 1.5 years. The drain of the chinese replacement batteries, however, did change.
Nope. This battery gives you 3x capacity. Charging time does not matter, 90% of people charge while they are asleep, like Brian says in the article. If you need to do an emergency charge somewhere (let's say you forget to charge overnight 3 days in a row), you get the same amount of amp-hours from charging the Zerolemon battery for 25 minutes as you do the normal SGS4 battery. So, no drawbacks from charging.
This 3x battery is $40 from Amazon and it includes a case. This makes it almost the best deal out of any cell phone accessory I've ever seen.
That being said, if you don't want a bulky phone, and like using a case that actually protects the phone (Otterbox-like), a recharger is a better option.

Faster even, going by the limited numbers we have (2.88 times increase in capacity, 2.61 times increase in charging time). If I were to travel more than I do, I'd get this thing in a heartbeat.
Don't you sleep at night? If the phone gives you 14 hrs of screen time, and takes 7.5 hrs to charge, that aligns pretty well with the usual human sleep cycle of 6-9 hours.
Agree. This extra battery makes the phone way to bulky and heavy. I mean I think 5" phones are to big already without extra battery. Of course if you are hip hopper with huge pocket it might work for you but never ever forget to tighten that belt or you will literally get caught with your pants down...oh no, they are already down anyway...
I wonder if Snapdragon 800's Quick Charge 2.0 will help with that in future devices. It's supposed to charge 4x faster, but I'm not sure what corners it has to cut to do that, or what negative effect it has on battery life, if at all.
You can get 3A car chargers pretty cheap, instead of the 1.5A USB BC1.2 standard (and I'm sure if you look you could find a 3A wall charger as well), so you could reduce that charge time to under 4 hours.
The ones I've seen interfere with FM radio, but you can put the phone on Pandora while its charging.
That seems like a horrible solution. I don't want to turn my phone off, take it apart, put it back together, then turn it back on just to add a little more juice if my battery happens not to make it full day.
I'd rather get an external battery that I can plug into phone's port. I use my phone a lot but there is certainly enough downtime to stick it on there for a couple minutes to charge it up. Remember, we're talking about getting through the day so any claims that it would take too long to get to 100% is foolish.
An external battery comes with its own charger, can use the same micro-USB as the phone, be cheaper than what Samsung offers, and sometimes be used in line to charge both at night if you happen to have used both that day. The external battery also isn't limited to what fits inside the phone.
It's a much more elegant and convenient solution all around.

I constantly run around at my work, always on my feet so an external battery doesn't work for me which is why I prefer the extended battery. The drawback is finding a great fitting belt holster for it. I personally think the S4 is too thin anyway and with my current Otterbox Defender case/holster I like the feel much better. Always felt like I would drop the phone without it.

I'm getting about 2 to 2 and a half days on a charge so far, and I don't mind the added bulk the battery gives. Makes it nice to not have to worry about getting to a charger if I plan on going out without enough time to charge for a bit.
Yeah but it is still going to give you a good solid 10 hours of use after charging for only 3 or 4 hours. Just like any battery I'm sure this one goes from 20% to 80% in a flash. And I would much rather have this thing at 80% than a stock battery at 100% anyway.
It is products like this that make Samsung #1. 17mm and 4 oz isnt that big or heavy. I've used bigger, and heavier in the past.
This thing would be much more interesting (and sellable) if they had put some thought into the fucking shape of the battery/back. Just sloping the thing smoothly towards the edges would make a huge difference. Offering some nice colors and textures would also help.
This way it's just a brick for those who don't mind carrying a brick.
If I would have to design a modern smartphone I would put the camera into the centre and which has a battery with a hole in the middle and a sloping shape down to a somewhat thin edge. This way you would get a smartphone that feels good in the hand, that still has some serious volume to carry a big battery and some serious depth where it is necessary to integrate a camera with a huge sensor or an optical zoom.
But this thing is certainly no better than a tablet. Face it, it's just a brick. If you can carry this, you can carry also something that is much larger.
Getting a battery with a hole in the middle will be pretty expansive, as it is not something you can just source from any number of supplies. It is not pretty, I give you that. But I doubt the people who are considering this thing are too concerned about looks. For them, it is like a necessary addition that can replace carrying one or two spare batteries/battery packs and still do all they need with the phone. And I have not idea why you bring up tablets. There is still a big difference between a smartphone like this which will last you 15 to 20 hours and a tablet that is a very different form factor and last you between 5 and 10 hours... maybe not even with phone service.
this battery is not meant for you. useful for people who are miles away from a charger and swapping battery crazy. I used to swap battery in and out but did so much that it wastes a good amount of my time. i'll be carrying just as much batter on myself anyways, may as well just get a battery that delivers.
I agree with you frypan and I think Samsung and other manufacturers should stop trying to make things so thin at the sacrifice of battery life. We should be able to go a full day without having to recharge but even casual users that I know complain their battery life.
I guess you also spend an hour getting dressed and having breakfast as well as an hour or two in front of your computer/TV before getting to bed, i.e. plenty of time to letting it charge fully.
Every one I've talked to so far says camera works fine and no sign of heat issues which is why I went and purchased one. Just waiting for it to come in.
My brother rocks the equivalent from ZeroLemon for his S3. I have gone the other route - I bought a package of 2 additional batteries + wall charger from Anker off Amazon. I just don't want something that bulky to carry, so I'd rather just carry an extra battery around - the stock battery is so thin that I forget that I even have it in my pocket most of the time.
One of the selling points of the S4 was the form factor. These massive batteries are a major compromise and the tradeoffs are too great for me.
i use to think like that until you truly use your phone to its limit. Form factor doesn't matter afterwards because a powerless phone is just a powerless brick.
Extra battery is nice and all but when you swap battery out as much as I do, you start to break the back cover of the galaxy s4. not much point of having the phone slim if i have a crack cover
I'll wait for Samsung to hopefully release their official extended battery. I bought the oem extended battery for the S3 and it struck a perfect balance between thickness and extended use (2100mah to 3000). With the battery I could easily go a full 20-24 hours with moderate to heavy use and the increased thickness actually made the phone more pleasant to hold. I'd rather not my phone turn into a huge brick.
Yup. I also got a phone I can still easily pocket and that's still slim. For my usage, I don't need a phone that lasts 2-3 days. Just something that guaranteed lasts about 16-20 hours regardless of usage. I don't feel like carrying around a brick.
Can you comment on the truthfulness of this Amazon Review? I don't know if you've had it long enough to notice how the plastic wears. And I don't know that the battery contact issue is a problem as long as you don't drop your phone in water.

Any batteries that only have 2x more capacity? I'd like less bulk. Good quality ones of course. I've bought non-OEM extended batteries and their capacity degrades pretty fast.
Both hyperion and anker make 5200mah aka double capacity batteries they are not thinner though than the zero lemon, that said they do not block the rear speaker
I would like to see a comparison of this against a 7500mAh _external_ battery pack. External battery packs also charge up your internal battery instead of being drained directly by the device, which means there's a transfer of charge between the external battery and the internal battery. Last time I checked, using one battery to charge another battery can be quite inefficient.
You lose something like 30% of the stated capacity of the external battery, at least in my experience with a 5,600 mAh Anker... Personally I've grown to prefer the external/USB battery approach, since it's not something I need on a daily basis. If it were, I'd probably opt for carrying a second stock battery, less overall bulk and if have an erratic schedule you can keep a third one at home or in the car and just cycle them to make charging less of an extended process... I'm glad Samsung has stuck to removable batteries tho (despite never having owned a Samsung phone), having more choices is always a plus (and one of Android's advantages).
this battery is for ppl who truly use their phone aggressively. That they have more phone usage time than computer usage time.

Also if you are a bittorrent freak with unlimited 4G dataplan uncapped like myself, this is your next best friend. A slim battery only gets you 2 hours up time maximum and everytime you swap out the battery, the app restarts and rechecks all the files. not so fun to wait for that and waste more power doing so.

I wouldn't use this day to day but if I'm going out where I don't have ready access to power this would be a nice option. I could use this for weekend up north for say camping or hunting and not have to worry about recharging
I have the s4 and the Zerolemon battery.. I think theres a problem with battery report with the s4.
I charge my battery to 100% and get a green light. When my battery reached about 18% for other reasons I had to remove my sd card. I replaced my battery in the phone... The whole thing took about 30 seconds.. When I booted my phone. I noticed my battery charge was at 47% continued to use my phone (moderate to high use) managed 38 hr of use.. there has to be a glitch in the software thats initially giving low battery life levels.
I charged my phone to 100% ang got a green light. At 18% I had to remove the battery and pop it back in for some unrelated reason and when i booted my phone. It was at 48%. Managed to get 38 hrs of use on my s4 with the Zerolemon battery. I think theres a problem with the way the s4 is reporting battery charge.
RAZR MAXX HD Please include it in the tests! I have one, and bought it specifically because it is a very decent thickness and weight, yet it has the largest battery of any stock smartphone.
Buy 2 batteries and a charging cradle. Then you just swap battery when one runs out. With over 10 hours run time it should give the other one plenty of time to charge up :D
I'm just going to mention the elephant in the room in case no one has (pun intended given the size of the battery)...a higher capacity battery would need to go through fewer charging cycles in the same period of time, thereby lasting alot longer before it starts to degrade..resulting in being alot cheaper in the long run as a solution for an intensive user (unless the quality of the battery is truly pants). FYI, the insulating cover also kind of takes into consideration the overheating problem with the galaxy s4 from intense usage which clearly anyone who buys this would likely fit that profile.
I'm sure like many i've seen the tips and tricks on the s4 which tell you how to save existing battery life because (if you dare) once you turn on all of the powerful features that the phone is actually capable off, and perhaps even keep a few apps running simultaneously, you can pretty much see the battery bar go down. What's the point in a phone that can do so much if you can only do it for like...30 minutes.
This is purely function over form and represents a valid option at this time (and likely for a long time as i cant see anyone developing a battery with a higher power density for a while).
I don't feel like to use extended batteries like this as I do not use cases. They both make the phone bulky. I personally have got a RAVPower Power Bank 10400mAh. It works like a charm when charge my phone and tablet. I am happy with the capacity.
I use this battery on my S4 and while it does last a long time, the case is sort of obnoxious. It is like a floppy case, so it doesn't really have a solid back plate. I love about all these kinds of smartphones. Its just that, in terms of battery, I am more cautious. I want a phone where the battery is next to its priority. Just this recent, I bought new battery (from Amazon which is the Replacement Battery For Samsung Galaxy S3, 2100mAh Li-ion Battery by Procizion (No NFC) for my S3 and due to weird battery problems I've encounter. But as a whole, phones like these are the ones that needs to be given a fair review.

My brother rocks the equivalent from ZeroLemon for his S3. I have gone the other route - I bought a package of 2 additional batteries + wall charger from Anker off Amazon. I just don't want something that bulky to carry, so I'd rather just carry an extra battery around - the stock battery is so thin that I forget that I even have it in my pocket most of the time.One of the selling points of the S4 was the form factor. These massive batteries are a major compromise and the tradeoffs are too great for me.

i use to think like that until you truly use your phone to its limit. Form factor doesn't matter afterwards because a powerless phone is just a powerless brick.Extra battery is nice and all but when you swap battery out as much as I do, you start to break the back cover of the galaxy s4. not much point of having the phone slim if i have a crack cover

I'll wait for Samsung to hopefully release their official extended battery. I bought the oem extended battery for the S3 and it struck a perfect balance between thickness and extended use (2100mah to 3000). With the battery I could easily go a full 20-24 hours with moderate to heavy use and the increased thickness actually made the phone more pleasant to hold. I would like to see a comparison of this against a 7500mAh _external_ battery pack.External battery packs also charge up your internal battery instead of being drained directly by the device, which means there's a transfer of charge between the external battery and the internal battery. Last time I checked, using one battery to charge another battery can be quite inefficient.

You lose something like 30% of the stated capacity of the external battery, at least in my experience with a 5,600 mAh Anker... Personally I've grown to prefer the external/USB battery approach, since it's not something I need on a daily basis. If it were, I'd probably opt for carrying a second stock battery, less overall bulk and if have an erratic schedule you can keep a third one at home or in the car and just cycle them to make charging less of an extended process... I'm glad Samsung has stuck to removable batteries tho (despite never having owned a Samsung phone), having more choices is always a plus (and one of Android's advantages).frypan - Wednesday, July 24, 2013 - link
this battery is for ppl who truly use their phone aggressively. That they have more phone usage time than computer usage time.Like a door to door salesman.
Also if you are a bittorrent freak with unlimited 4G dataplan uncapped like myself, this is your next best friend. A slim battery only gets you 2 hours up time maximum and everytime you swap out the battery, the app restarts and rechecks all the files. not so fun to wait for that and waste more power doing so.

I have the s4 and the Zerolemon battery.. I think theres a problem with battery report with the s4.I charge my battery to 100% and get a green light. When my battery reached about 18% for other reasons I had to remove my sd card. I replaced my battery in the phone... The whole thing took about 30 seconds.. When I booted my phone. I noticed my battery charge was at 47% continued to use my phone (moderate to high use) managed 38 hr of use.. there has to be a glitch in the software thats initially giving low battery life levels.

I charged my phone to 100% ang got a green light. At 18% I had to remove the battery and pop it back in for some unrelated reason and when i booted my phone. It was at 48%. I'm just going to mention the elephant in the room in case no one has (pun intended given the size of the battery)...a higher capacity battery would need to go through fewer charging cycles in the same period of time, thereby lasting alot longer before it starts to degrade..resulting in being alot cheaper in the long run as a solution for an intensive user (unless the quality of the battery is truly pants). FYI, the insulating cover also kind of takes into consideration the overheating problem with the galaxy s4 from intense usage which clearly anyone who buys this would likely fit that profile.I'm sure like many i've seen the tips and tricks on the s4 which tell you how to save existing battery life because (if you dare) once you turn on all of the powerful features that the phone is actually capable off, and perhaps even keep a few apps running simultaneously, you can pretty much see the battery bar go down. What's the point in a phone that can do so much if you can only do it for like...30 minutes.
This is purely function over form and represents a valid option at this time (and likely for a long time as i cant see anyone developing a battery with a higher power density for a while).

I use this battery on my S4 and while it does last a long time, the case is sort of obnoxious. It is like a floppy case, so it doesn't really have a solid back plate. I love about all these kinds of smartphones. Its just that, in terms of battery, I am more cautious. I want a phone where the battery is next to its priority.
