I don't put a case on my phone no matter how expensive it is... it's getting replaced in less than 2 years anyhow

And you just throw the old one away? Some people like to pass them on to their friends or sell them, both of which are helped if the phone isn't completely danged and scratched. :-)

I gotta agree with Iketh, I don't use any cases either. You buy a nice slim pocketable phone, why would you want to bulk it up with a piece of plastic/leather and make it like something from 10yrs ago?! I don't even use screen protector films.

Thing is, my phones after 18months use without a case look cleaner and tidier than most people's do WITH a case, all I do is look after it, keep it in a pocket on it's own without coins and keys etc. It's really quite simple to keep your phone looking nice if you actually bother to try. My current Sensation looks almost new, not a scratch in sight, had it 11 months.

Although many people like to sell or give away I've sent my last 2 to recyclers here in the UK and got more ££ than I would have profited from an eBay sale (after fees/postage). Because I look after the phone I get full recycle value as quoted. Technology moves so fast most people I know already have a phone they want more than my old one by the time my 18month contract is over!

I agree. Putting a case on a high end phone like this is a real crime. How hard is it to just take care of your phone? I've never used a case and all my phones look like the day I bought them. Same goes with tablets. Looked around for carrying cases for my Prime, but they all doubled the weight and thickness. Instead I went to the dollar store and bought a 10" laptop case for travelling. Now I can appreciate the great design work (so light and thin, it's great!).

I actually tend to not use a case for the first 6 months or so. That's when the newness wears off and I find myself being much more casual with the phone.

Then I get a thin case like the Seidio surface. It has certainly saved my phone from drops, usually dropping it on the pavement when I make the brilliant decision not to pocket my phone before fumbling with my keys and also holding, say, an umbrella in the rain.

those cases kinda look stupid on the phone. I hope the other designs are better than that

What are you talking about! Who wouldn't want sexy bikini cases with the phone's back showing?
    /sarcasm

I don't get it. Can't they just make a simple clear plastic case so the entire design work can show through?

Transparent plastic or even TPU ends up looking like ass within 6-12 months... If it's hard plastic it'll just show a massive amount of scratches (worse than the first iPhone's / iPod touch mirror finish), and if it's soft glossy TPU it's a magnet for skin oil and invariably ends up developing an amber look within a few months.

A transparent case from HTC for the One X already exists.
  • nbrenner - Friday, April 20, 2012 - link

Will those cases work on Sprint's special edition phone? Will the kickstand have to squeeze between the slits?
  • tipoo - Friday, April 20, 2012 - link

Isn't the One Ss micro-arc oxidation created chassis supposed to be super strong or something? These don't have the edge to edge glass of iphones either. I'd be pretty comfortable without a case on these (even the X with polycarbonate instead), then again I don't use one on my Nexus S either.
  • usama_ah - Friday, April 20, 2012 - link

hear hear, I never had a case on my Nexus S and dropped it SOOO many times (pavement, hospital floors where I work, at home) -- plastic corners had very tiny chips but fine aside from that -- https://picasaweb.google.com/117746494404318586664...

Meh, I still roll with thin TPU cases for several reasons...

    A) Allows me to put the phone face down almost anywhere without worry... Good for privacy and/or speakerphone use, specially with HTC phones which automatically mute the ringer when turned face down or activate the speakerphone if you're on a call.

    B) Impact protection, it doesn't seem like TPU or silicon would help much but they really do absorb quite a bit of force when the phone is dropped. Silicon sucks tho, they get much floppier than TPU and it's a lint magnet.

    C) Extra protection for the camera lens so I don't have to worry about where I set it down, the extra millimeters the case adds are enough to raise the lens off any surface.

You can get a transparent or smoke colored one which still showcases the phone's design...

and I've since sold that Nexus S and roll with a Galaxy Nexus, and this one has a TPU case (mainly because I really love the phone, but also because of all the reasons you mentioned minus the HTC automatically muting thing)
  • tipoo - Saturday, April 21, 2012 - link

Yeah, my Nexus S has survived so many bad drops its crazy. The plastic doesn't feel the best, but its durable as heck.
  • dogteal - Saturday, April 21, 2012 - link

How about making the case just the same color as the phone and leaving a cutout for the HTC logo, or will apple sue them cause it is such a straight forward idea?
  • masterkui - Saturday, April 21, 2012 - link

I have always used cases on my phone, especially high end phones, I am careful with my phones but accidents happen and having a good case on it sets my mind at ease a little. i have always preferred the gel cases and experience shows that they can certainly take a knock.

A lot of people will want to protect their new investment from damage/wear & tear and things like "trendy" cases improve the overall attractiveness of the HTC brand. Not everyone will like all of them but I think HTC are on the right lines with this.
