Remind me which game will we be using this GPU? Even crysis 2 is coming out with DX 9.
There are no games to take advantage of PC hardware anymore. AMD and Nvidia best invest in time in convincing developers to actually make use of their hardware.
There yet is a game that utilizes 5870 to its max potential. Sorry buy upgrading is kind of pointless now.
Saying that games don't take advantage of PC hardware by citing that a new game will ship[ with DX9 support is like claiming that nothing beyond a Geforce 7000 series is needed because games can be configured to run at 640x480 resolution, low detail, and no physics.
If you want to utilize the newer hardware, even if not every feature, adjust the graphics settings sliders to the right.
While my Desktop PC is quite powerful and cant be used as an example its got GTX 580 in SLI with an I7 980x OC to 4.5ghz.
I also have a Laptop which comes equipped with a GTX 260 which is equal to about a 8800gtx from 4 years back. Trust me most games out today run fine in 1080 on my laptop maxed out with 2x -4x aa doing about 40-60fps.
Unless someone wants to be multiscreen gaming (which is what i am currently doing with my Desktop setup) anything above a GTX 460 is completely overkill this is simply because these days PC gets games that are ment to run on 5-6 yr old Console hardware.
funny, I have a i7+GT260M in my laptop and it can't do anything like that. I think you're way overstating the power of your laptop there.
Most console ports (e.g. GTA4, Red Faction Guerilla) I've had to dial down res to 720p to get smooth fps >30, let alone 1080p with 4xAA.
That a game is built for separate renderers to allow that game to run on a modified 7800 or X1900, through to GTX 580 SLi, is irrelevant to me. The issues I have with console games is that they are largely formulaic, shallow, and unimaginitive.
I meant i7+GTX260M of course, no such thing as gt260m, actually it's clocked at up to 580c/1450s/1000m so is a bit more than a stock 260m (112sp 550/1375/800 256bit gddr3)
This really is an ignorant comment. There are dozens of games that can conquer a 5870 at 1080p, much less at 1920p (which some people game at). I have a 5850 and the STALKER games can make my framerate unplayable if I turn up all the settings my screen.
How can you look at games like Battlefield 3 and Skyrim and still say something like this? It baffles me.
Stalker is a badly optimized game, talk about 95% of the games out. most of them dont need high end hardware, most of them will work fine with 3-4 yr old hardware. I would think a GTX 460 will be more then enough for BF3 in 1080p.
The only point when games will choke current midrange hardware is when you run them at resolutions like 2560*1600 then turn on 8x AA. Other then that sorry 95% of games out dont need good hardware its a fact.
Battlefield 3 devs have stated the game will be DX11, and built for PC first and foremost (with features making the PC version better than the console version). It may be a homerun, but its a leap forward. Game is slated to release later this year.
For me its more the hope that we'll finally get 30" 2560x1600x120Hz monitors and maybe 1920x1200x240hz ones. A card like this would almost be a must to take full advantage of those.
For the impatient, reliable sources put the twin 6970 GPUs in the 6990 at 830MHz/5GHz (Core/Memory) vs a 6970's stock 880MHz/5.5GHz. You can apparently bump core clocks up to standard 6970 speeds, but doing so will break the 300W ATX spec.
Well, that would make sense as to why they are declocked.
Thats seems like an awful lot of power to be supplied by just two aux power connectors though. I wonder if there is much over head (or maybe better efficiency) of having this rather than two individual 6970's.
If you break down the amount of current per wire, it is only a couple amps at most. Your typical kitchen toaster pulls many times more current through that size wire. One 12AWG wire is rated for 9 amps.
Two 8-pin power connectors, half of the wires are +12V and half are ground return.
So, there are 8 +12V wires.
For the 300W spec at 12V, 300/12 = 25 amps. With 8 wires, that's 3.125A per wire.
That's a fair amount... remember the toaster is running at 120V, so it can take a few volts of drop in the wiring without affecting the current draw much. At 12V, you're losing almost 10% of your available voltage for every volt of drop.
The pdf is payware (members only) but a copy of it is here: wenku.baidu.com/view/5c3e83eb81c758f5f61f67e8.html (see page 13)
Page 15 also gives some additional details (such as a card being allowed to be powered using 3 x 6 pin connectors) but overall, a card is not allowed to go over 300 watts.
So it's 12.5 Amps divided into 4 wires but this doesn't mean each wire will carry only 12.5 A / 4 = ~ 3 A. Anyway, the wire thickness is usually big enough that it usually doesn't matter.
can we get a best video card for the resolution series of articles please?
we know a super high end card is wasted even on the most demanding games if the resolution is 1680x1050 like i play on.
at what point does the video card get bottle necked by the resolution? that is a very important quetion to answer....and can anything be done to improve performance when you are bottleneck by the resolution?
If you're buying a 6990 for 600-800$ , i'd figure you'd be able to pay at least 130$ for a 22" monitor running at 1920x1080
Yes, such series of articles would be useful, but I'd say it would make more sense to pair cards like the less expensive cards at around 150-200$, like AMD's 6850.
With 2x 6990 you got 8GB RAM and 4 GPUs.. i think in OpenCL this is cheaper, less power hungry than Tesla?!?! But the quality is maybe concern if those cards have to work 20 hours under 100% utilization... can somebody comment this?
On something that is significantly faster than my 8800GT under a 100w power envelope, preferably in a PCB package under 8" in length.

Don't know what you'd consider "significant", but the Radeon 5750 was faster than a 8800GT and Powercolor had a passive version (GoGreen or something) that didn't require an additional power connector and thus was in a 75w power envelope.

I saw the review on the 6xx series GPU line. I can't say it gave me any incentive to upgrade from my HD 5870 CF set up. There is hardly anything anything to gain. I would wager that this HD 6990 is going to be another disappointment.
Or are they Micro HDMI ports? I wonder how many monitors does this thing can display? I read something about daisy chaining display port connections for AMD cards...

Yeah, we'll just ignore that little switch on the side that sets the core clock to 880Mhz just like the 6970. Nobody is interested in that, anyway;)

The one where people play on a 30" monitor (or 3 of them) and want the ability to turn every option to the max.Crysis ran great under DX9 but it took years for a card to come out that would actually play the DX10 version at a smooth framerate.
Battlefield 3 comes to mind first hand.

Don't forget the motherboard also gives some juice through the PCI Express slot, otherwise cards without additional connectors would not work.According to the PCI-SIG (the guys that standardise PCI Epress), you have:
1. 75w in total though the slot (5.5A @ 12v) (+/- 8% voltage difference from 12v)
2. 2x3 pin connector 6.25A @ 12v = 75w
or
3. 2x4 pin connector 12.5 @ 12v = 150w

I am unhappy to notice that since the 68xx series AMD has decided to cut Dual Link DVI ports. There is not a single AMD card after the 68xx with 2 Dual link DVI ports.
And they will dare to char $500+ for this handicapped power sucker.
The old 4870x2 offered up to 4 ( FOUR!!!!) dual link DVI ports, and now i am supossed to pay more and receive less?
And to add insult to injury, i bet that the 6990 will cost more than the Geforce 580.
it is not to late for AMD to realize this mistake and bundle a ton of Display port adapters, including at least a single D-DVI.
