lenovo does, IBM does not... i'm worried though, thinkpads are starting to "modernize" a bit... T410's are starting to deviate from the "classic" thinkpad designs...
Could someone enlighten me, what makes a laptop 3D, besides having screens with high enough refresh rate please? No, really? Is it a pair of glasses with some IR sender, sending sync signals? Same with TVs.
And why can't I just plug external IR thingy into USB and use this on my old laptop?
"And why can't I just plug external IR thingy into USB and use this on my old laptop?" If your old Laptop supports 120Hz refresh you can use it for Nvidia 3D and Bluray 3D no problem. But you kinda answered that question already, which leaves me puzzled as to the intention of your comment/question. :D
As a guy who has made a half-dozen 3D rigs of his own, maybe you just aren't imaginative enough to care.
I may be too harsh here, after all you could be missing an eye.
Either way, until you have seen 3D and experienced a properly immersive game, there is no hope for you.
Sure it is a Gimmick, but so is playing a video game on a laptop, or even a computer for that matter.
Ever sit back and wonder why everyone pays money to sit with 2 eyes and watch the shiny things on the screen in what amounts to Monovision?
Games period are stupid in the grand scheme of things. If you ever look around you at the people who really get things done, most of them don't own a TV, let alone a computer, or if they do it hasn't been turned on in years.
Complaining that something that allows your brain to properly percieve depth in a simulation is a gimmick is short-sighted to say the least.
Guys, this isn't what we want. We want *the exact opposite of this.*
We want a laptop with *gaming guts* but *business looks.*
Give me a 15" 1680x1050 RGBLED with ThinkPad aesthetics and build quality, packing an i7-620M and a Mobility Radeon 5850. Then I'll be happy as a clam in the sand.
It's amazing. Switchabale graphics is nice but when the dedicated part is more or less worthless too for any meaningful gaming. I don't see any value in crappy dedicated graphics especially since the Intel IGP is usable for video acceleration. I've been looking around for month but no one seems to be able to offer anything useful. They always mess up at least 1 part mostly the screen resolution.
There was a time when you couldn't buy wrong with an IBM Thinkpad. Right now, I think you can't by right with anything Lenovo. Everything I've seen of them the past few years - desktops and laptops alike - is of far lesser quality than what Big Blue used to build. And now this... gadget! Yuck. It's like digging up the corpse of an old friend and pissing on it. I'd buy an HP or Dell before even thinking of anything Lenovo.
People who want real 3D will just wait for a 120hz display, or they will use a different method of 3D.
I hear of people swapping the panels in their laptops to get specs that they like, soon perhaps there will be 120hz panels for swapping into older or cheaper laptops.
I say good job for making it 3D. I just hope it includes the glasses, and it would be nice if it had an internal bay to keep the glasses with the laptop at all times.
Bare minimum a case to hold the laptop with the glasses should come with it.
If someone could do a review on the laptop that I currently suspect is the best "bang for your buck" out there. It's made by compal, and available on Cyberpower.com who's machines you've reviewed before. If you'd like it configured like I did, which I think is the best bang for buck, do this: Go to the website. mouse over 15.6" Laptops and click on the $999 Xplorer X6-8500. It has a 1080p screen. (I'm not sure why the people who run this site do this, but even though the other configurations use the same chassis when personalized they come out to cost more than this one; annoying since it makes me configure all 3 or 4 machines built on the same base chassis to figure out which one is cheapest/best for me.) Then I configured it with the Core i7-620M CPU. (to get it over 1K so I can take advantage of the 5% off.) 4GB 0DDR3-1333, hopefully 7-7-7-21, probably not, but hopefully. ATI MR HD5650 1GB GDDR3 320GB 7200rpm HDD (I did this cause I'm gonna take that HDD out and use the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB, thanks for that review!!) Everything else on that page I left untouched. The only thing I did on page 2 was switch to Intel wifi with bluetooth; Though I'm curious if the MSI option is equal/better; 17 bucks isn't nothing. It has HDMI out and a fingerprint reader. This page says 3 USB ports, the specs sheet says 4USB ports; not sure which is true. (I do wish they were USB 3.0 ports, but I was hoping you guys would test some stuff and tell me if that even matters for use with an external hard drive, mechanical disk 7200rpm. Transferring large files like movies and games mostly.) On page 3 I select "none, format only" for the OS. And select "LCD perfect assurance" cause even 1 dead pixel is unacceptable to me. This brings the total to $1008.90 after 5% off, or $992.75 if you get the MSI network card. So yeah, I really hope you guys can get a hold of one of these for review; as a loner or given as a review unit or maybe someone will just buy one and review it cause it's really tempting me right now... like a lot! If you're review is good I'm gonna start saving up and hopefully be able to buy it around Christmas. Thanks guys! A loyal reader. - Brian

Actually, it sounds as if they're simply licensing the technology from the company called TriDef.http://www.tridef.com/home.html
