Though the IC industry is somewhat unique in that you don't have to be on the cutting edge to do business, but in most other industries, actively deciding not to leverage an advantage is also an active decision to direct the company toward bankruptcy.
Some things don't scale well, or are cost-sensitive. After quitting the 7nm race, GloFo eventually made an enhanced version of their 12nm node. For all we know, GloFo can make an advanced node several years in the future at a fraction of the cost and effort that TSMC and Samsung spent, using alternative lithography from Canon or somebody. And it will be good enough.
I believe the automobile industry is keeping them afloat, the average EV has 2,000 microchips, but that may change as cars migrate towards unified computing.
Why is Intel said to be first time in top ten "in recent quarters"? I didn't think they'd been selling foundry services before. Or are you counting them as a customer to themselves?
