You guys failed to mention the biggest difference (to me, and probably your readers) between the Phone 7 and 7 Ultimate; on the Ultimate, when connecting the AeroActive Cooler 7, an electronically controlled flap on the back opens up to directly expose a copper heatsink connected to the CPU cooler, thus creating (as far as I know) the closest thing to a real, active air-cooled smartphone. I was really hoping you guys could get this phone and run some benchmarks on it; could the Ultimate version possible not throttle at all due to thermals???

that would explain the weak water resistance

Lenovo and redmagic been making active cooled phones for years.

I really don't understand this I want to game on my mobile phone market. A switch or the other numerous handheld device out on the market will give you are far better gaming experience. Second it also means I'm not draining the battery on my cell phone and I can you know use it for actual phone stuff.

I see this product more like a gaming 7" tablet, but with mobile data capabilities and not just wifi.
Carry a separate phone, and bring this around for games. It even packs a pretty large 6000mAh battery.
Also the Switch is not exactly a good gaming device anymore, minus a very small selection of games.

With that said, I think I would still prefer a Steam deck, since I haven't found any must play game on android.

:) When I said a switch or other numerous devices that includes the steam deck, Ayaneo etc.

If the switch isnt one, this thing is even less of a gaming device. And that price too.
  • meacupla - Saturday, April 15, 2023 - link

No, the problem with Switch is the hardware.
As in the emulators on android, windows, linux, and iOS will offer better performance in the same package size.
So then the only titles worth playing on the Switch become exclusive titles with pvp, or games that use motion tracking in the controllers that emulators are still having difficulty with. Games like RFA, fit boxing, switch sports, etc.

Yeah right, as if most people buy a 1000$ rog phone to emulate stuff. Emulation is only popular because of cheap chinese phones. Lookup what sells more, the switch or rog phones.

do those alternatives provide 165hz hdr with a full touch interface (no extra buttons or keyboards/mice) and the rest of the android ecosystem such as being able to view netflix, maps, and take photos/videos?

consider it an android touch device similar to an android tv device or an android laptop device rather than a phone

recharging seems fast and you only need a bit for phone use (but do people getting this use 'phones' or only data/wifi for internet communication apps)
  • iphonebestgamephone - Saturday, April 15, 2023 - link

No, they only provide actual games.

Like any other device intended for games, one would generally expect to exercise the hardware's capabilities while accepting charge from mains. I, for one, would rather have all of my digital stuff (communications, computing, entertainment, etc) in as few devices as possible. Why not spend $500 more on a phone than drop money on a gaming PC or console - At least that might be the thought process here so there is appeal for this sort of plays-your-games phone. However, SD storage would be lovely and these phones appear to lack in that department.

LeEco used to sell a very fancy version of Google Cardboard, which would turn the Qualcom 820 based LeEco MiMix2 into a VR headset that was pretty cool.

I just got it out to throw away because smartphones got a tad to big to fit inside and if I do VR, it's much better on an HP headset with an RTX3090 to drive it.

But turning a smartphone into a headset is still the only way I can imagine gaming on a phone and the only justification for speedier hardware (well apart from being a 4k workstation with an external display, if they ever got that right).

For everything I do otherwise, smartphone SoCs have been way too powerful to be interested in an upgrade.

Too bad they stop supporting those phones even on LineageOS eventually...

These high refresh rate smartphones - surely they must use TN panels as well? How else do they manage such high refresh rates?
  • meacupla - Saturday, April 15, 2023 - link

IPS, VA, and AMOLED manage to hit high refresh rates, because it's not 2013 anymore.
240Hz IPS, and VA panels are quite common. In fact, you can even get a 360Hz IPS panel these days.
Even OLED has hit 240Hz, with 360Hz and 480Hz planned for 2024.

AMOLED used to only go up to 120Hz in 2019, but it's 2023. Technology has advanced and Asus now has the fastest? AMOLED screen.

Razer and LG had 120hz IPS phone displays back in 2018... I am no phone gamer, but the response time on my RP2 seemed good.

And 120hz IPS goes back to ~2012 on the desktop. In fact, the Korean 1440p monitors had quite respectable response times.
