You can play games off the external drives, they just don’t get all the fast loading and stuff, but at least on my Xbox, I have a ton of games that are not updated for series x and those play just like normal off a usb ssd.
It’s the fast start and quick swap and alll that that don’t work on a usb drive.

It would only cost about $30 more to build your own with a 2TB drive. I did this with a Samsung 870 QVO and an Orico enclosure last year. Just make sure the enclosure has UASP support.
Neither of those problems are likely to have too much of an effect on a drive where installation speeds will be limited by your broadband and unlikely to saturate the SLC cache, and after which the vast majority of activity will be reads.
