This product is marketed to kids and gamers. So I get why there is no webcam, for adults that actually have to do video conferencing with clients and people at work this isn't the laptop for you. Best to choose something else.
Your comment doesn't make any sense. Kids and gamers can also be students, and students need cameras for meetings. Adults can be gamers, etc. There's no point in buying a separate laptop just for for online meetings.
Yeah good luck participating in group work sessions and doing homework on a phone LMFAO. Maybe if you’re a student who doesn’t GAFits work, but most schools require you to use something with a keyboard
Maybe some of them, but most of them don't. You know how I know that? They need to present their work by sharing the screen, usually on zoom. Yes, I have seen it lots of times. Now, are you going to tell me that students use pen and paper (only) for school work?
I don't understand the issue of the webcam not being present. You know you could use multiple devices for teams and zoom right? I use my desktop to see my conference call slides and groups, while using my phone to record my video and audio - it's pretty seamless, and I would say quality is either equivalent or better than a super cheap pair of speakers connected to the desktop. Furthermore, you could just use headphones with integrated mics, connected either to the phone or computer... ...
Phone for meeting? No thanks. I'd have to find a way to prop it up so it's stable. And most remote proctoring software requires a webcam on the computer you're using to take the test
Odds are anybody streaming with this or in need of a webcam, an integrated webcam wouldn't be of sufficient quality anyway. Integrated webcams are generally garbage because the bezel and lid are so thin and there isn't space to fit a multi-lens arrangement. Though this laptop might be an exception I suspect the lid is quite thick. A lot of laptops that try to use this thin bezel approach put a webcam under the screen, but in practice its more appropriately a 'neck' cam.
@Beaver M. - This is exactly what bugs me. I'm a grown-ass adult, I want my laptop to do everything from games to work, but you can't get *literally* everything all in one device and a sacrifice has to be made somewhere. For me, I'd rather have a device that performs well and doesn't blast my ears off and needs an external webcam than have one with a crappy cam and crappy cooling, which describes the majority of this device's price competitors.
Fxckk video conferencing, I keep my camera off even on zoom or google meet. If your face is too important for the meeting then they are giving an additional camera for you to put it in front of you.
I am not saying for personal calls... I use my laptop for work as well and we do have video calls with colleagues where we share stuff from the laptop. That won't work if we use phones.
capitalism nonsense. oh you want to game on your laptop? here's a gaming laptop, also look at it's "coolness". also, gamer don't need webcam anyway, buy our dedicated laptop for your daily office task!
seriously I like to game but I don't like the ridiculous design of a gaming laptop. plain and boring is fine, thanks.
@edwpang And how. Hell, I got a £20 1080p cheapo webcam a few years back after switching back from a laptop to a desktop. It has a flexible stand that means I can clip it to the top of any display or stand it on a handy surface. It's not exactly smartphone quality, but the light gathering ability of its chunky lens is still superior to every built-in webcam I've ever used. I'll happily break it out of storage if the need arises.
"nobody needs a crappy webcam". Just speak for yourself. I do work on play on my laptop and I DO need a built-in webcam - crappy or not. We're talking about laptop that costs 2k USD and to not have something so basic like a webcam is just ridiculous. And keep your dumb comments about using phone for calls to yourself as you have no clue.
It's not AMD.. It's ASUS weird thing with AMD laptops, the G14 & G15 both with AMD have no webcam, the M16 (Intel) has a webcam.
I don't know how ASUS is thinking. But I would very much have a G16 with a 5800, RTX 3060/3070 in a thin chassis (18mm or less), two SO-DIMM slots (or at least 16GB soldered and one SO-DIMM), a 16" 1600p 120Hz+ with 400nits +, a webcam with IR for Windows Hello. Not a gaming machine but a content creation laptop.
Yes, this. A content creation mobile workstation with the same CPU + GPU as this model but with a good webcam, a 1440p or 4k touch-capable screen would be amazing.
This kind of hardware is often send from reviewer to reviewer, no? And those stickers seem to be positioned under your wrist. So, if you use it intensely, I can imagine your wrist would push them outward a little? They áre only stickers, which is glue + some form of paper/plastic. And glue has the tendency to become fluid under pressure/temperature. No?
2.28 kg (5.05 lbs), although the power brick and cables add .73 kg (1.6 lbs) to that (understandable for a 230W unit.
You could carry a lightweight usb-c brick to work around that, with 2 secs of googling found a 100W charger that weighs 200g - would suffice for everything but gaming (and combined with the battery and the silent power profile you could still squeeze in a good couple of hours of gaming)
With 100W of power going in, you could probably get near-indefinite gaming by activating a frame limiter like Radeon Chill and reducing detail levels. 60fps at 1080p should be attainable with less than 50% of the GPU's rated TDP, and the CPU can hit those rates at a 15W power level.
What a great idea. I suppose you mean that one would have to charge the laptop before doing this and then have a super slow discharge on the 100W adaptor...
If you drop the details down a bit and/or set the frame cap close to the lower end of the variable refresh rate, I suspect you could probably even see some (very) slow charging and still get an experience that beats a GTX 1650. All hypothetical though, would love to see someone test this!
I don't understand why there are no webcams with Asus + AMD laptops. This is a bad decision considering more and more companies are allowing remote work and most likely most people are going to use a single laptop for gaming/work/personal use.
Also, though it's primarily a gaming laptop, 16:9 displays should go away for good. Industry pushed these displays on consumers, not that consumers wanted them.
Well, which variable do you keep fixed? Width / screen diagonal? Yes, obviously the screen of 3:2 is greatly superior because it has extra vertical pixels. But most forger that you pay for that with a bigger and heavier laptop (also more expensive) - so, this is a tradeoff. A viable one, but not a clear "16:9 doesn't make sense". Add those extra vertical pixels and your 15" is about as large and heavy as a 17" one. If you take screen area as the fixed variable, 3:2 means a better screen for work, worse for movies. And a smaller keyboard.
This isn't like standalone screens where all aspect ratios cost the same and don't have any negative side effects (once you set screen on your desk you don't tend to move it often)
well at least they include external webcam on my scar 15 AMD 5000 series + Nvidia 3070. The worst part is we can't disable optimus for laptop in 2021, but this laptop is always ready stock in my country, unlike the Lenovo, MSI, Omen (at least in my country).
a special case, then. but it's not solely AMD issue. as Asus gaming laptop with Intel chip doesn't sport webcam. except than one you mentioned or older model, that is.
Using a phone as webcam is still far superior to a webcam, though. A webcam is really only useful when travelling, when setting up a phone webcam isn't feasible. There are plenty of webcam apps available, and they can connect over USB or wifi. I really don't see the appeal of a shitty integrated webcam anymore
Too bad these machines have no way to add an external webcam if you need one. As we all know, webcams are super bulky and could never fit in a laptop bag along with the charger.
Laptop bags famously never have separate pockets for that...
Seriously though, the same criticism applies to any laptop that has a charger brick - or an external mouse, which is basically mandatory on any machine used for work.
True. Whoever designs these bags, and even some backpacks, often seems to skip the user testing. When I was able to travel with my laptop, I always took my charger and a mouse with me.
Mate, literally over the last five or so years the electronics bag scene has exploded with options. Even before then there was an enormous selection of bags with more pockets than any sane person would know what to do with.
@Tams80 - if that reply was to me, I should stress that I was being sarcastic. Every laptop bag I've ever owned, from cheapo £20 jobs to a ridiculous £150 masterpiece I bought once, has had at least a few pockets for whatever stuff you might happen to be carrying - mice, headphones, smartphones, second laptop, games console (really), personal massagers (not really), etc.
Agree. They are leaving potential sales on the table; but then, right now is a seller's market. However, omitting a 3-5 dollar webcam is a deal breaker for me. Too bad, specs look great.
If it's a deal breaker you are not in the camp this machine is intended for. Webcams are a nuisance, true remote workers get laches fitted over them or tape over them so they don't spoil all hands meetings.
1. Laptops like these are not primarily work machines. People buy them to play games. 2. External webcams almost always have compact mounting options built-in. 3. Where are all these people going to to do their video calls that an external webcam would be a problem?
I thought companies issue laptops are locked down and would not let you install games in the first place. And this heavy power hungry machine is not really a good fit for students. Webcam is definitely not needed on this. Don't even see a reason for trackpads.
I agree that a "shitty integrated webcam" doesn't have much appeal. However, I would like a decent webcam in my laptop. If you have to or want to host a video call or conference, doing so from your smartphone can suck quite badly; most platforms won't let you use a virtual background, or, even worse, what if you want to screen share? I know some people use an app to use their smartphone's cameras as their webcam. But, this is a "hard core" gaming laptop, so I might not be the customer they are thinking of. Well, some of us do things besides gaming on our machines.
I still prefer a dedicated webcam I can keep in my bag. Where I work, webcams and mics arent allowed except for in specific areas. We have to ensure theyre dosabled and put those thin strip lens covers on. If Im on the go, ie airport. Phone/zoom/earbuds.
I agree that, for integrated webcams, a slider or (better) an actual hardware disconnect, also for the microphones, would be preferable. Neither works without electric contacts.
I'm almost positive I read the laptop offers an HDMI and DP (USB-C) output, for external monitors/TVs one would presume--too bad the reviewer here forgot to test a 1440P external monitor--which is likely considering the target market for this monitor. The reviewer kept talking about the absence of a web cam and a limit of 1080P (which doesn't exist) as if either was an insurmountable design flaw--oh, gee, I guess thinking just a little bit out of the box is difficult for people these days. He could have tested with an external monitor at > 1080P--and if he looked hard enough he might even have found one with a built-in web cam. Do tell. But that would have prevented the negative observations, I guess--so we can't have that, eh? BTW, 1080P is nice indeed when you are running on batteries--but I guess that was a bit too obvious to get his attention. Many, many people with laptops plug them into the wall at home and attach monitors/TVs/ whatever else they might want. No sense in writing a review which pretends otherwise.
It matches a 3070 most closely in pricing, performance sits in the range of high-TDP 3070 models and low-to-medium-TDP 3080 models. Apparently it's held back a little by RAM that has slow timings - with that resolved, it's right up there with the 3080.
Nice review, but I would have liked to see a bit more details on the GPU side of things, that is some 4k comparisons with rtx 3080, since that is the target competitor. I look forward to see how the 6600m fares. If that is similar or better than 3060, I could give it a shot.
Nice to see AMD back in the game. For the keyboard, I have one of these ASUS laptops (with a 3080) for work, and the position of the F keys really annoys me. As a programmer I use them quite a bit, and because they're shifted by 1 for the first four (F1 is above 2, F2 above 3, etc.) and half for the next four, I keep hitting the wrong one.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the 6600M brings to the table, and if it could provide reasonable gaming performance on battery with a bit of battery life. A smaller gaming laptop that's still reasonably capable would be very nice.
I love this thing to bits. I wish there was a way to control the charge rate though, since pushing that crazy amount of power through the battery cannot be good for the long term. I guess you can limit the charge rate by using USB-PD but 100W means you can only slow down the discharge of the battery rather than actually charge it... Amazing product. ASUS' work on the cooling system is commendable too. Up till now I've seen that they do not compromise on size if they feel it will affect the cooling performance. Now they've delivered cooling performance even after downsizing. As an aside, my sisters' ASUS FX553VD suffered two major hardware issues during her ownership for which the authorised service outlet asked for INR50k+ to fix. I luckily found a guy who does low level repair and we managed to avoid buying a new laptop. Hopefully that was a solitary incident...
Can you guys PLEASE review the recently announced Huawei Matebook 16? I think it is the first time that a 45w H series CPU (5800H) is used in a laptop without pairing it with a power hungry dGPU, which is exactly what I have been looking for.
If you use games in your benchmark that do not require much gpu horse power then you'll conclude that running at 1080p creates a cpu bottleneck. If your were to use more gpu demanding titles, the gpu would get to stretch its legs. Some of the more demanding games I play on my 3080 laptop are barely above 60fps using the highest settings @ 1080p. Imagine what the situation would be like at 2k. I'd rather being cpu bottle necked @1080p (while still over 60fps) than having to push 2k or higher and experience sub 60 on more demanding titles. People say that games look fine when you run 2k displays at 1080p. To me that looks horrible.
Not interested into anything not 1440p, IPS, 144Hz, top color accuracy and Freesync... AMD promised that on stage yesterday... WTH does Asus smoke...!!!???
Even you guys admit that ASUS SCREWED up not going 1440p. How awesome... ASUS was already on my blacklist for the disaster the G73JH-A1 was... but this is just ridiculous, they are joke as system implementer. They proved it by their incompetence.
"AMD targets the Radeon RX 6800M at 2560x1440, and for good reason. As we have seen, in pretty much every title, it is completely CPU bound at 1920x1080, even with the newest Ryzen 9 5900HX as the processor. The synthetic tests, as well as the UHD resolution results, really prove this point.
Although there is certainly a market where the 1920x1080 resolution is desired for the lowest latency, in this system, that panel is really too low of a resolution for such a powerful GPU, and it becomes wasted money spent."
Well, i just realized that there is a 1440p panel also... however this 1080p version should not even exist. A 1440p panel resolution can be scaled to 1080p if required... so what is the point? 300Hz??? In optimal gaming scenario at 300Hz constant, you gain 4ms of response.
As a comparative, 4ms is the equivalent of ONE FPS.... from 250Hz-251Hz... only idiots will defend this stupidity.
Ah, I made a mistake in the calculation. The difference is more in the realm of 50 FPS at a 120Hz basis. So basically, 120Hz to 170Hz is the same amount of time from 144Hz to 300Hz.
Makes more sense. But still, 50Hz from 120Hz is worth the same than 144Hz to 300Hz. Meaning those 50Hz are worth those 156Hz. This is because FPS are not a linear factor and a ratio.
Perhaps the next generation of gpus will have enough power to render even the most demanding titles at 2k60 baseline, at which point I'll happily embrace 2k laptop displays. Native 1080p,to me, looks much better than 1080p on a 2k display. Personally I prefer a lower res native display so that I can crank up the quality settings. Once I'm over 60fps, it does not matter if I'm cpu bound or not. I'm not going to lower a native 2k display to 1080p to get 60fps.
I initially thought: ooh, real home, pageup, pagedown, and end keys... But nope, the right column is media playback control keys, and those text cursor control keys are hidden behind Fn.
Competition is the best thing for the consumer. Doubt I'll get an AMD system (I'm a video editor who uses quicksync) but happy to see them doing so well.
I'm confused with these GPU tests. Comparisons to the competition at only 1080p? Only this laptop's performance at 4K (no comparisons)? 3DMark Fire Strike - which is *eight* years old now; and no Time Spy or Port Royal? 3DMark total score and not GPU score?
If not for all the bribe money that Intel spends to prevent companies from building high end AMD laptops, AMD would own the laptop market based on performance. Asus has always taken the bribe money so don't expect them to embrace AMD significantly be it in laptops or desktop mobos.
Shut up and take my flatmate's money! He's got an MSI Raider with a 2080 (probably the same model in the comparison charts), and the whole flat agrees it's obnoxiously loud, even at idle. I'm going to show him this review tomorrow and tell him to sell the MSI and buy this as soon as it's available. Saying this as someone who has a (much quieter, somewhat thicker) MSI myself.
Aside from the fact that my ears really want one of these in the house, it looks pretty nice in general. The fingerprint magnets are unfortunate, but otherwise it would very likely be in the running if I were in the market for a new laptop... or even just a powerful GPU in general. I'm excited to see AMD offer such a complete package, and at a reasonable price. The battery life for a gaming laptop is especially impressive. Gotta iron out those WiFi goblins though, I'd probably use it on Ethernet 85-90% of the time, but few things are more aggrieving in a computer than spotty WiFi.
This reviews proves the point that PC makers should really consider giving a higher resolution monitor for a high end laptop. Its pointless to give a 1080p with very high refresh rate because the GPU will easily be bottlenecked by a mobile CPU. Also the high refresh rate, i.e. 300Hz, is equally if not more taxing on the battery than say a 1440p monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate.
In my opinion full HD for 15.6-inch screen is sufficent (If it was 17-inch that is a different story). And you still have enough horsepower if you connect external LCD.
You are blind. I can easily tell the difference between 1080p and 3k on a 15.6" laptop. 1080p has never been sufficient. Never will be. 1440p should be the minimum standard. Period.
And the entire point of a gaming laptop is so you can use it on trips, not so you can lug a 30" 4k display around to plug into it to compensate for the god awful screen that it comes with.
Sure, you can tell if you start looking for it, it in normal use and especially while playing a game you are very unlikely to notice. You are going to notice not hitting high framerates though.
@Tams80 - I'll second the "easily" comment, although the flip side is claiming that 1080p has "never" been sufficient is obviously nonsense, it was good for a while. For me, 1440p at 150% scaling is instantly recognisable as better than 1080p at 100% on the same display size, though.
With a GPU / CPU pairing like this, frame rates are going to be near-identical between 1080p and 1440p in most extant titles.
Back in The Dark Ages, when we were confined to a single planet by gravity, reviewers would publish the mass (or weight, if we were grounded) of the reviewee. For normal systems, we can use forklift to move the thing, but for supposedly "mobile" systems, knowing the thing's mass is something we need to know before making a purchase decision.
I dreamed about all AMD setup remembering times from my old 2c athlon @2.2ghz + radeon x1950pro. I worked all summer to earn only 20% to buy this pc. All summer and even sold every possible thing and dumped my gf. Pc was a beast. On agp. When all my friends were on Intel and nvidia at a Time on pcie. My system was older but games run smoother. I sold my Last setup week ago for 530eur with i5 4570 + gtx1070. My offline gamer days ended that Day. I have like 1000eur in savings for next pc that will be a laptop, but all i can get is 10750+1660. In plastic shell with 8y old lcd Tech and realy old cpu + super low bin gpu. Like really. 8year old lcd panel and cpu only generation++ better than my old desktop.
Have a look at the Dell G5 SE. You should be able to afford a model with at least a 6-core CPU and a 144Hz display. The chassis is plastic crap and you'll need to re-paste the cooler, but in return you'll get RTX 2060-level performance for less than your 1000 Euros. It's not going to be a lot faster than that GTX 1070, though. If you really want better than that, you'll need to either save up some more or wait for the RX 6600M models to arrive.
I hope ASUS update their X13 Flow to have this as an option. I doubt it tough.
As for a built-in webcam being a must these days... why? People are hardly moving about a lot and external webcams offer better quality (and peace of mind privacy wise as you can just unplug them).
That's not to say that having a built-in webcam isn't preferred or handy. It is, but it really shouldn't be the issue so many make it out to be.
"If you build it they will come" is accurate for my situation. I searched and searched and could not find what I wanted so I had to settle for something else. What I wanted was a laptop that has a 5900HX, a 3080 with 16GB, and a 17-inch display. I found several candidates with two or three out of the four but none with all four. I ended up going with one that has an Intel 8-core CPU and the other three attributes. I work with CUDA so an Nvidia GPU is mandatory and lots of video memory is also needed. I definitely would have preferred the AMD CPU but I can't complain too much because it's a really nice machine. The GPU has more cores than any other in the building which is rather amusing since it's a laptop.
Spelling and grammar errors (I didn't check the conclusion):
"They key caps provide a slight bit of traction as well,... "The" not "They": "The key caps provide a slight bit of traction as well,..."
"Keyboard lighting, at least on this model is four zone RGB, which is always a bit odd." Missing comma: "Keyboard lighting, at least on this model, is four zone RGB, which is always a bit odd."
"The surface is very smooth, although like the laptop finish, it is very susceptible to fingerprints as well, so quickly looks grimy." Run on sentance: "The surface is very smooth, although like the laptop finish, it is very susceptible to fingerprints as well. So it quickly looks grimy."
Really disappointed with ASUS . I went ahead buying this laptop reading the above sort of Articles ROG Strix G513QC_G513QC laptop which is brand new and just a month old is giving a battery life of 2 to 2.5 hours with 6 to 7 chrome windows opened and no software's installed . Thats is really really pathetic from what is given in the article .

It has a flexible stand that means I can clip it to the top of any display or stand it on a handy surface. It's not exactly smartphone quality, but the light gathering ability of its chunky lens is still superior to every built-in webcam I've ever used. It's not AMD.. It's ASUS weird thing with AMD laptops, the G14 & G15 both with AMD have no webcam, the M16 (Intel) has a webcam.I don't know how ASUS is thinking.

Spunjji - Friday, June 4, 2021 - link
With 100W of power going in, you could probably get near-indefinite gaming by activating a frame limiter like Radeon Chill and reducing detail levels. 60fps at 1080p should be attainable with less than 50% of the GPU's rated TDP, and the CPU can hit those rates at a 15W power level.ads295 - Friday, June 4, 2021 - link
What a great idea. I suppose you mean that one would have to charge the laptop before doing this and then have a super slow discharge on the 100W adaptor...Spunjji - Monday, June 7, 2021 - link
If you drop the details down a bit and/or set the frame cap close to the lower end of the variable refresh rate, I suspect you could probably even see some (very) slow charging and still get an experience that beats a GTX 1650. All hypothetical though, would love to see someone test this!GeoffreyA - Tuesday, June 8, 2021 - link

Also, though it's primarily a gaming laptop, 16:9 displays should go away for good. Industry pushed these displays on consumers, not that consumers wanted them.Zizy - Wednesday, June 2, 2021 - link
Well, which variable do you keep fixed?Width / screen diagonal?

No sense in writing a review which pretends otherwise.bejito81 - Tuesday, June 1, 2021 - link

As a programmer I use them quite a bit, and because they're shifted by 1 for the first four (F1 is above 2, F2 above 3, etc.) and half for the next four, I keep hitting the wrong one.Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the 6600M brings to the table, and if it could provide reasonable gaming performance on battery with a bit of battery life. A smaller gaming laptop that's still reasonably capable would be very nice.

I love this thing to bits.I wish there was a way to control the charge rate though, since pushing that crazy amount of power through the battery cannot be good for the long term.

To me that looks horrible.nico_mach - Tuesday, June 1, 2021 - link

Even you guys admit that ASUS SCREWED up not going 1440p. How awesome... ASUS was already on my blacklist for the disaster the G73JH-A1 was... but this is just ridiculous, they are joke as system implementer. They proved it by their incompetence."AMD targets the Radeon RX 6800M at 2560x1440, and for good reason. As we have seen, in pretty much every title, it is completely CPU bound at 1920x1080, even with the newest Ryzen 9 5900HX as the processor. The synthetic tests, as well as the UHD resolution results, really prove this point.
Although there is certainly a market where the 1920x1080 resolution is desired for the lowest latency, in this system, that panel is really too low of a resolution for such a powerful GPU, and it becomes wasted money spent."
eva02langley - Tuesday, June 1, 2021 - link
Well, i just realized that there is a 1440p panel also... however this 1080p version should not even exist. A 1440p panel resolution can be scaled to 1080p if required... so what is the point? 300Hz??? In optimal gaming scenario at 300Hz constant, you gain 4ms of response. As a comparative, 4ms is the equivalent of ONE FPS.... from 250Hz-251Hz... only idiots will defend this stupidity.
eva02langley - Tuesday, June 1, 2021 - link
Ah, I made a mistake in the calculation. The difference is more in the realm of 50 FPS at a 120Hz basis. So basically, 120Hz to 170Hz is the same amount of time from 144Hz to 300Hz.Makes more sense. But still, 50Hz from 120Hz is worth the same than 144Hz to 300Hz. Meaning those 50Hz are worth those 156Hz. This is because FPS are not a linear factor and a ratio.

The fingerprint magnets are unfortunate, but otherwise it would very likely be in the running if I were in the market for a new laptop... or even just a powerful GPU in general. Its pointless to give a 1080p with very high refresh rate because the GPU will easily be bottlenecked by a mobile CPU. 8year old lcd panel and cpu only generation++ better than my old desktop.Spunjji - Monday, June 7, 2021 - link
If you really want better than that, you'll need to either save up some more or wait for the RX 6600M models to arrive.Tams80 - Saturday, June 5, 2021 - link

The GPU has more cores than any other in the building which is rather amusing since it's a laptop.ballsystemlord - Tuesday, June 15, 2021 - link
Spelling and grammar errors (I didn't check the conclusion):"They key caps provide a slight bit of traction as well,...
"The" not "They":
"The key caps provide a slight bit of traction as well,..."
"Keyboard lighting, at least on this model is four zone RGB, which is always a bit odd."
Missing comma:
"Keyboard lighting, at least on this model, is four zone RGB, which is always a bit odd."
"The surface is very smooth, although like the laptop finish, it is very susceptible to fingerprints as well, so quickly looks grimy."
Run on sentance:
"The surface is very smooth, although like the laptop finish, it is very susceptible to fingerprints as well.
