    Curved edge screen? Next.
  • yankeeDDL - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Really? Why? I have an S8 (yes, Samsung S8, 4 years old and counting) with edge screen. It still works perfectly, it is a pleasure to hold and it has some decent edge effects that are actually useful.
I'd definitely consider another phone with curved edges.
I look forward to something a tad smaller than this though: 6" for example.
I hate the fact that on Android if you want the top of the line HW you get it only on huge phones.
  • Wereweeb - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Because it's terrible to use and distorts images. It's stupid and should stop existing. I say this as a former S6 Edge user (I didn't buy it, it was handed down to me)
  • theblitz707 - Friday, March 26, 2021 - link

thats your opinion. i never had a problem with my curves s10+ and quite like it, it makes the screen look more premium and i never felt a distortion problem when watching videos. in fact compared to 11 pro max, that looks like a phone from years ago.
  • inighthawki - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Am I the only one who prefers a phone with a flat rectangle for a screen with no curves, notches, or rounded corners cutting off or warping various parts of the display?
  • Wereweeb - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Eh, rounded corners makes it easier to hold, and doesn't really compromise images that much. I'll take notches over hidden cameras, but otherwise I also dislike them, and prefer pop-up cameras or a camera between the housing and the display.
  • inighthawki - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

I guess I mean that I'm fine with having a bezel on the top/bottom for that kind of thing. The phone itself can still have some roundedness on the corners. For example right now I use a pixel 2 and love it. I think they could shrink the bezels without sacrificing the screen being a rectangle.

And while the corners dont really compromise much, it's something that forces software developers to work around. For example, if you're right a game, you now have to query APIs to know how rounded the corners are to ensure you aren't putting text or status icons somewhere the user can't see. Like imagine if your desktop's monitor had rounded corners and it forced Microsoft to update the taskbar so that the start button wasn't flush against the edge. It serves no purpose. You're quite literally just losing functionality. And on a phone it's done for no other reason than the bragging rights of claiming the display is 0.2" larger than the previous generation with zero bezels.
  • inighthawki - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

    If you're writing a game*

    Stupid no edit button :(
  • hanselltc - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

minor curved corners are acceptable if it truly helps the phone keep a more handleable shape. if it has a chin and/or a forehead, then it is stupid. other cutouts are all absolutely asinine.
  • MetaCube - Thursday, March 18, 2021 - link

Rounded corners are great, stop smoking glue
  • inighthawki - Thursday, March 18, 2021 - link

What a well thought out reply. Thanks.
  • zamroni - Wednesday, March 17, 2021 - link

I still use galaxy s9 as my current phone.
    Curved edge screen sucks.
    It also less durable.
My screen replacement also costed ~$100 more than flat s10e
  • Wereweeb - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

    Preach, brother.
  • Hifihedgehog - Sunday, March 14, 2021 - link

Curved edges: Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
  • Findecanor - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Curved edge means more likely to break if dropped
  • ballsystemlord - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Shouldn't it be less likely because of the force vectors involved?
  • RSAUser - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

No due to how the glass is folded, force distribution is worse. Also getting cases that work well is more difficult.
  • Spunjji - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

In theory, but the main problem is the total inability to fit a full-coverage screen protector.

Does MIUI support 10 Bit SDR with Adobe RGB display?

I hope anandtech can test bt2020 / adobe rgb / DCI-P3 color gamut of smartphones.
  • vladx - Saturday, March 13, 2021 - link

You don't need AdobeRGB on phones, DCI-P3 is better since it's more geared towards content consumption like videos

Hey, you're the one that voted for MAGA. The result is that even the Nazis in Great Britain have it better than you.
  • hbsource - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

You have no idea the bubble you live in.

In most European countries, Bernie Sanders is right wing. Even in the UK he'd be a centrist, at best.
  • asmian - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Hey! That sort of language is unacceptable, and preposterously untrue. There are no "Nazis" here, and if that's a snide side-swipe at Brexit it's not even relevant - people voted here on far more complex sovereignty issues than intolerance of foreigners. Thoughtless insults like that are extremely offensive to citizens of a country that fought real fascists in WW2.
  • jaju123 - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

As a fellow brit, they are deffo some nazis here lol.
Calm down on the WWII rose-tinted glasses action
  • asmian - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Sure, there are a tiny number of fascists, as in any country. But not any significant quantities. And they are not "Nazis", who were specific to a time and place in the last century. So there's no need to accept lazy insults from people who don't know what they are talking about - it's hardly rose-tinted patriotism, it's just not standing for such extreme offensiveness.
  • Spunjji - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

You're the one who saw the word "Nazi" and felt attacked. As another fellow brit, I just shrugged at what was - overall - an ill-informed opinion.

The fascists here are present in sufficient quantities for us to have a fascist government. If you disagree on that count, I'd advise reading Ur Fascism by Umberto Eco and then comparing what you see with what we have. It's not pleasant reading.
  • hbsource - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

If you think we have a fascist government in the UK then you're either 15 or have the understanding of a 15 year old.
  • Wereweeb - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Really offensive to the country that killed more Indians than Hitler killed Jews? Give me a break.
  • asmian - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Just so we can compare which glass house you're throwing stones from... where are you from exactly? No country has a perfect history if you're prepared to dig back far enough. There's no reason to stupidly impugn current citizens for actions they weren't reponsible for.
  • Wereweeb - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

    That doesn't matter, I'm not a nationalist.
  • hbsource - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

YAY! A stupid person talking about a stupid post by stupid person probably trying to be stupid starts prolonged argument about who is the biggest Hitler.

And I thought the internet had changed. Phew.
  • Spunjji - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

To be clear: You're the one in the glass house, asmian, because you're the one who thinks we should still get special "not fascists" credit for fighting against Nazism in WWII. Someone else pointing out your hypocrisy isn't, in itself, hypocrisy. Similarly, "everybody sucks" is a worthless defence for discussing a specific kind of suckitude.

The more you know, and all that.
  • asmian - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

What rubbish. I don't know why you're determined to attack me, rather than the original poster. I'm in no glass house, and no hypocrite, because I'm not going around attacking others based just on their nationality. Nor am I myopic to systemic faults, but calling a Tory government "fascist" (as you said elsewhere) is just leftist name-calling, not helpful politics. And it's patently untrue and ridiculous hyperbole when there are real fascist governments oppressing women actively in eastern Europe right now, within the EU.

When someone calls an entire country "Nazis" then that can't go unchallenged. It's no hypocrisy to point out that making comments about an entire modern country based on the past actions of individuals, or the state (in a "democracy" that was able to be voted for by substantially less than half of the population at the time), is offensive. I wasn't defending those actions, so there was no "worthless defence". I just don't subscribe to the popular PC theory that every current citizen should feel guilty for actions in the past they weren't responsible for, which you obviously do, since you're so angry about it. And I know quite enough NOT to be lectured by some random internet knowitall who does nothing but troll every thread here as if it's their private blog.
  • Martin84a - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

Just a small observation. On one hand you say "hey, don't judge Britons based on the actions of our ancestors", but at the same time you say "hey, our ancestors fought the real fascist in World War 2." If you don't feel shame based on your ancestors actions, you shouldn't feel pride either. It's not like you took part in their actions.

You can't have it both way mate. If you aren't connected to what someone in the past did, then you should feel shame for what they did. But you shouldn't feel the need to

Assuming you are talking about the Bengal famine, you seem to have forgotten about the assorted natural disasters that just happened to occur at the same time, the bombing of Calcutta which disrupted the rice market, and the loss of imports from Burma. Deaths through famine and misadministration do not equate to deaths in concentration camps.
  • quorm - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

I apologize for contributing to the derail.

You're seriously saying that they are responsible for the deaths of millions, but because of the manner in which they died, its not so bad? Pretty sure the victims wouldn't feel the same way.
  • RSAUser - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

Pretty sure he just said you can't say they're directly responsible for it.
  • Spunjji - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

They sure do look similar when the man in charge at the time saw those deaths as a moral good. Oh no, those "beastly people with a beastly religion" are dying, how sad, better keep forcibly expropriating the goods they need to survive.

Nobody's "forgetting" any of what you mentioned, it's just not particularly relevant to discussion. It's like saying that Stalin didn't kill most of the dissidents who died under his regime, he just sent them off to places where they died from exposure and starvation. Go Stalin!
  • Spunjji - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

There are plenty of neo-Nazis here, and every single one of them voted Brexit. Not everyone who voted Brexit was a neo-Nazi, of course - they just voted for a magical unicorn *alongside* the neo-Nazis, spurred on by far-right voices in the popular press.
  • hbsource - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

Bear in mind that I say this as someone who voted remain. If you blame 'the popular press' for Brexit then you misunderstand British politics.

You have got it the opposite way around to reality. Which is a big reason why the left in this country has not won a general election since 2005.

People do buy The Sun and then decide to vote for right wing parties. The Sun pitches itself to right wing voters in order to sell newspapers.

If you think that without the right wing press then everyone would vote Labour, get ready for more decades without a left of centre government.
  • asmian - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

Your opinion is worthless, since it's a gross generalisation that takes no account of the many and varied reasons people voted, preferring to smear everyone who voted the way you despise with right-wing or neo-Nazi tendencies by clever wording. You do like the sound of your own smugness, don't you.

I am among those who can't figure out why anyone would, or physically can, listen to stereo music on a phone. Or are you talking about ear buds? Does one hold the phone up to your nose? Or leave on your lap? Phone sound, under any condition I can imagine, is as close to anechoic as one can find outside a wedged foam room.

Unfortunately this thermal throttling behavior is something that I have also experienced in my xiaomi redmi note 7. Although it was launched as a budget device, it thermal throttled pretty frequently in games, especially in summers. It seems like this is how xiaomi configures their devices. Lesson learnt for future purchases.
  • Duncan Macdonald - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

A high power SOC in a phone demands better cooling - about the only way to achieve this is for the back to be metal (aluminium or magnesium) with a good thermal connection between the SOC and the back. Plastic or glass backs can not spread the heat effectively enough to allow a SOC such as the 888 to sustain full performance.
The 888 would probably do much better in a tablet that can afford to have better cooling.
Given the peak temperatures mentioned, the lithium ion battery could easily be overheated leading to short battery life.
  • iphonebestgamephone - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

There is a Mi 11 Ultra apparently coming too.

One concern I have is the updates and software. The MIUI software has not been the most stable and I am not sure about how many years of updates this phone will get.

Samsung recently offered 3 years of Android updates and 4 years of security updates. I'd like to see that be the norm.
  • eastcoast_pete - Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - link

Thanks Andrei! Question, possibly related to the high power draw at basic:Did you have a chance to try it with 5G turned off? In addition to the lower efficiency of the 888 vs the 865,the integrated 5G modem is apparently a bit of a power hog, compounding the already worst power draw of the 888 in Samsung 5 nm over the 865 in TSMC 7. So, how much battery drain does the 5G contribute?
  • hanselltc - Thursday, March 11, 2021 - link

So there is this long running thing about phones playing games better in power saving mode, and I've seen a few Chinese reviewers highlight that behaviour specifically on Mi 11, pointing out power saving mode somehow reduces GPU throttle. Any plans on testing that?

But I just do not feel right giving money to China. The way they treat their people is awful and as for Honk Kong. It is not a one party state just like China with pre-elected officials sactioned by China. Neither country has any democratic proccesses left.

Bro, don't be misled by our media. To know what China has done, you have to take a trip. The big cities are no worse than the US's, and it's safe to venture out alone at night. No country is perfect, but when you go to China, you can find out people's lives are so much better than our media reports. Just like, Apple, Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi, these technology brands' products are very popular in China, and you can see that most people's material conditions are not bad.

Thank you Andrei Frumusanu for the review.
I am a reader from China and of course a digital fan. I would like to add some explanations to some of the article based on what I have learned.

The SoC power control strategy is different for real games and benchmark tests. It's because Xiaomi added the " God hidden mode" as a means of global background control of running power in earlier versions of MIUI. The principle of its implementation is to define the SoC temperature threshold and SoC frequency for different Apps, and even control the hardware refresh rate of the screen when different Apps are opened.

The configuration file of "God Hidden Mode" is sent from the cloud, and the update frequency is 7-15 days as long as the phone is connected to the Internet. You can call *#*#76937#*#* to check the control panel of this profile. The difference between "China server" and "International server" is the configuration for different regions of Apps. I have a positive opinion about the " God Hidden Mode". You can call *#*#76937#*#* to check the control panel of this profile. The difference between "China server" and "International server" is the configuration for different regions of Apps.

I have a positive opinion about the " God hidden mode " approach, and I am a Genshin Impact player.Due to the presence of the "hidden mode", the X1 big core often runs below 1Ghz while gaming, which results in better sustained performance and temperature threshold performance. Of course, this feature is definitely not meant for benchmarking fraud, but for better longevity and sustained performance.
  • MoePtyan - Friday, March 26, 2021 - link

Incidentally, this profile can be deleted. In the application management of the settings panel, find "Power & Performance" (I'm not sure if this is the name of the international version of MIUI) and clear the application data, and the temperature and frequency profiles of all Apps will be deleted. At this point the phone is not suitable for daily use, the battery life is very bad, often hot, but the performance has been unlocked. Many senior Chinese players will use this method, the phone plus the cooling back clip together.
