Well it is the same thing with mobile socs. You have to release it first then manufacturers can start to developing products based on that soc or controller. Just like pci 6.0 spesifications are allready done. And it will take some time to see pci 5.0 motherboards to come to the market.
I'd like to see 2.5" drives start using USB in place of SATA. Two to four times the bandwidth, works equally well internally and externally, only requires a single cable.
I believe DisplayPort over type c is not accounted towards the usb bandwidth. The problem is due to how usb protocol operates. It has limited support for queuing, which is fine for mechanical drives but not ideal for SSDs
I honestly don't see why more cheap systems don't just use eMMC-based flash for internal storage. The standard has improved a lot since the first Bay Trail budget systems shipped with 32GB of soldered down storage. It's faster and better than it was before and generally sufficient for day-to-day low demand usage. Saves the USB ports for things like a wireless mouse or a USB stick and keeps system costs down.
If you rely USB interface you will need thunderbolt 4 since it can support 20 Gbps USB 3.2 gen 2x2 (ffs I hate this name). TB 3 can only support usb 3.2 gen 2x1.
