I'm a bit surprised they went to an x8 3.0 link on the chipset instead of an x4 4.0 one, even if everything coming off of the chipset is still limited to 3.0 speed.
  • QinX - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

Might be because it makes routing the traces easier, they don't have to adhere to the PCIe 4.0 signal requirements. Downside would be that more pins are required.

Other being quite boring platform , there is noticeable lack of M-ATX offerings.

Also it seems like even with properly finned heatsinks Gigabyte Aorus master requires a fan to cool VRMs which is not a good sign.

I'm on a Asus Prime X570-Pro for just over a year now and I've not heard the chipset fan once totally overblown issue. Drama queens!
  • Samus - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

I think it's impressive Intel kept a PCIe4.0 chipset down to 6w TDP. Definitely doesn't need active cooling.
  • Slash3 - Sunday, January 24, 2021 - link

    The chipset isn't Gen4.
  • Spunjji - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

Not surprised if they're expecting users to overclock chips that will exceed 200W at stock settings. 😬
  • YB1064 - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

Is it just me or are the MSRPs listed utterly insane? Intel has been relegated to a poor man's AMD, yet these crazy prices? As they say, a fool and his money are soon parted.
  • Samus - Saturday, January 23, 2021 - link

I don't think it's actually the chipset costs that are inflating the price of the boards, but the ridiculous power circuit and components required to deliver over 200w of power to the CPU's in order for these board makers to take advantage of PL2.
  • fundead - Wednesday, August 4, 2021 - link

I thought the active fan is for the 10 gig networking chip. It is facing that heatsink which is right next to the vrm heatsink.

ASRock ol' buddy ol' pal, you're breaking my heart here with the lack of SFF boards! The Z590I Vision D looks intriguing with the external DP injector for Thunderbolt transport, though.

Dumping the ASMedia USB controller is fantastic news, this looks like a good platform for me to move onto.

  • Beaver M. - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

Not for ASRock boards, since the ASMedia USB controllers were much more reliable and stable than the ones on chipset. Only an ASRock, though, and have been for almost 10 years now. IDK what they are doing.
Extend a cable on a chipset ASRock board USB port or use a longer cable, and you will get random disconnects. No matter the cable quality.

Can you guys please do an article like this for Z590 and X570 with Ryzen 5000 ?
    www.anandtech.com/show/11182/how-to-get-ryzen-working-on-windows-7-x64

If we search for "X570 Windows 7" on youtube there's a video showing MSI Ace X570 able to run it with Ryzen 3000. And I saw one person on a forum with notebooks where his Z490 Dark mobo was able to run Win7 except for the AX200 WiFi. Every piece of the board got the Drivers for the Win7, a small observation Z490 has ASMedia controller so it works with Win7 but this Z590 damn has that native bs meaning Intel will not provide the drivers for that USB3.2 for Win7..sad

Z590 Dark is coming I hope it's not this BS expensive, wtf is $1000 for a mobo for the dead end platform, MSI and ASUS insane pricing, esp MSI for it's Godlike having that tag, No matter what EVGA Dark will be the king in the OC and better support too.

In before someone reeeing over Win7. nope. Not interested in the bs talk, Win10 is a privacy nightmare even if I use WUB, O&O, Defender Blocker, WinAero, AeroGlass, Classic Shell and more it remains a stupid OS because of permanent Beta status. The 6 month releases cycle is complete BS. And on top unwanted unstable crap updates. I know how to get a Win10 stable with Enterprise and other modifications to remove useless components and unwanted bs like Defender etc. It never beats Win7 in UX and weight of the OS, too much bloatware esp that Xbox crap comes.
  • JfromImaginstuff - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

    Well then, install linux.
Also it will work on windows 7, there are generic drivers that will allow the card to function, but eh function well is a different issue altogether.
Also, if you're not using linux and hating on windows like this and your not tied to the Mac ecosystem, give Linux a go, you might like it, plenty of choice if one doesn't quite meet your fancy. Just please don't use win 7, for your own online safety and stuff........
  • Silver5urfer - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

Yeah Linux will be installed But I want a proper Stable Windows. Why do you think online safety ? Do you know that MS provides support, extended support updates are available plus even the best you can choose which of them to install and even have a pack made which removes all telemetry garbage CU updates that M$ pushes onto Win7, and with 8.1 also you can select and update what you want unlike Win10 BS. Oh and gaming with Proton on Linux I know but I want modding and all proper settings that I can enjoy for all the old fantastic games of the past decade. If there are any good games in future with DX12 only I will install Win10 Ent with all modifications. But that's not what I wanted, which only Win7 gets.

Also on a side note, no top SKU has 8 SATA ports WTF ? Not even Extreme, Godlike, Xtreme. There's only one which is EVGA Z590 Dark. Stupid bs this is from all the OEMs esp the X570 got all the x8 SATA ports for top mobos.
  • supdawgwtfd - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

If you want all that then use windows.

Expecting support and help on a discontinued product is ridiculous.

If you don't like the telemetry you know you can block it all with a firewall right?
  • Oxford Guy - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

You’ll never be able to block all the spyware with a firewall. Windows is just one component of it. Don’t forget things like stealth CPUs that are built into the CPU, like the little friend on Lando’s shoulder. Etc.
  • lmcd - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

What, the tinfoil hat isn't enough anymore? The "spyware" is just as present on any Windows era.

If you want to disable built in telemetry, pay for pro and disable it in the registry. It's not hard if you're really that into privacy.
  • Spunjji - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

@lmcd - but that would require *effort* - why waste that effort on customising a modern OS, when he could expend more effort cobbling together a barely-working platform on a 12-year-old one? 😂
  • Makaveli - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

lol all I saw in my head reading those post are "old man yells at clouds"
  • Oxford Guy - Friday, January 22, 2021 - link

That’s due to the fact that the old man has just as much chance of getting the spyware out of Windows and CPUs (and the rest) as you lot have a chance of saying something relevant.

Z590 only provides six native SATA ports.

ASRock's Z590 Taichi has eight ports, with two via an ASMedia ASM1061 controller.
  • Silver5urfer - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

Got it thanks. I suppose that's how the EVGA Dark got it's 8 SATA ports too.
  • weilin - Thursday, April 29, 2021 - link

Z590, if i remember correctly... has 30 HSIO lanes total:
6 of which are dedicated to USB (and can be ganged in pairs for 20Gb/s ports)
4 more that is either USB 10Gb/s or 5Gb/s or PCIe.
2 of them which can be Ethernet or PCIe,
2 of them which can be SATA, Ethernet, or PCIe.
6 of them which can be SATA or PCIe.
    10 dedicated PCIe

So everything all together means theoretically maximum of:
    4 LAN ports
    8 SATA ports
    10 USB ports
    24 PCIe ports

It's up to motherboard manufacturers to configure them as they see fit. It seems like the popular choice is to maximize USB, leave SATA at 6 and put the rest on PCIe ports (take 1 or 2 away for Ethernet, and 4 away for Thunderbolt if present).

You do know all the telemetry and spyware in windows was backported to Windows 7 a long time ago right?

If you don't want the windows telemetry you're only choice is to no use windows. Either accept it and use Win10 or Skip it and use Linux like any sensible person. In fact I'd argue Linux runs the old games better than windows does.

Sticking with an EOL windows 7 doesn't protect you from the telemetry and it only makes you vulnerable to the EOL product security.
  • bigvlada - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

I have been using W10 Privacy for a few years. It can disable telemetry and uninstall almost all non core components of Windows 10 like weather, store, xbox or edge. Install classic start menu and you'll have most of the windows 7 feel, without tiles.
  • Silver5urfer - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

There are so many tools that can slipstream latest updates and you can do it with tools or packs that have no telemtry too, like simplix and you can avoid any sort of telemetry crap. I have been using Win7SP1 only on a machine since a long time why didn't I get bit by ransomware by that.

Nope Linux doesn't run games that well, Proton is good but it cannot run everything and there are so many mods that are not possible for Linux, tell me does GTA 4 run on Linux with Script hook ? Or GTA V ?

Win7 can get fully security updates from Extended support from MS and they can be installed without any Telemetry it makes the OS far more stable than a Win10 which is a constant bugged trash.
  • Beaver M. - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

    Not nearly close to all.
Thats why Windows 10 was pushed that hard, even was (still is in some cases) free. Because they wanted more data from you than they were able to get with the other OSs.

In any case, you can block that telemetry and other spying very well with external tools or guides.
You can pretty much block all MS and affiliated servers from ever contacting Windows.
  • DanNeely - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

Expect the number of SATA ports to keep going down, they compete with USB3 and PCIe lanes for chipset capacity and as flash becomes ever more affordable the number of people needing them is going down. I suspect larger numbers will linger for longer on the more budget friendly chipset boards more commonly used for DIY NASes; but suspect within a few years if you want a 8/6 (and maybe even 4) DIY nas you'll need to install a SATA card to connect the drives.
  • lmcd - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

You're worried about performance but need to enable Aero on Windows 10? Yikes. And you're complaining about improved out-of-the-box security? Windows Defender is a good thing. I'm glad that Windows has an out-of-the-box AV, it's much needed. The release cycle can be deferred easily, just stick to the Fall updates. Don't be a baby. Don't remove things protecting you from the pointy end of your tinfoil hat like Defender either.

AMD never enabled Ryzen on Windows 7 and there have always been problems. The biggest red flag is that Ryzen SMT requires a new Windows scheduler that was incompatible with backporting to Windows 7. So you're asking for an entire kernel overhaul for an OS over a decade old that released back when the top-of-the-line was a Bloomfield quad core and AMD hadn't even started its Bulldozer debacle!

If you want a lightweight OS, you should try DOS. I heard there's no spyware in that at all. Also if you want proof that Ryzen 3000 doesn't actually work with Windows 7, there's a specific crash in Paint.NET that only happens on Ryzen on Windows 7. And there's no solution. The code causing the crash is a simple thread allocation that works on every combination of Windows 7 and supported hardware, as well as Windows 10 and its supported hardware.

So honestly, shut up. Use old hardware with your old OS, or use new hardware with a new OS.
  • Spunjji - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

    Savage, 100% accurate though.
  • Silver5urfer - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

Z490 Z390 Z270 all were not supported on Win7 as per Intel and MS. But they all run Win7 with all latest updates too (Yeah Win7 has security updates that you can install selectively and avoid telemetry). And X470 supports Win7 as well, needs modding but they all support Win7. X570 can run Win7 too.

DX12 games run on Win7, COD games, CB2077 are DX12 only yet they run & Nvidia RTX3000 series has Win7 driver support so your 2008 and 12 years old OS is running latest HW how about that reality check ?. And SMT Is not there in Win7 for Ryzen ? If you do not know about things properly you should never comment, esp that information about Defender. Did I even ask man about your opinion on this ? It's useless software that blocks all the files and a big processor cycle hog on the background. If I want an AV I would get Malware Bytes and run it for free. Or ESET. Defender is very bad Software for the same reason it is having so many tutorials on the Internet for blocking it.

Here's X570 with SMT on Win7 for your disinformation.
watch?v=A6_MdxMUpRE (use YT domain, AT has spam checker for links probably so it got removed)

Everything is not a tinfoil hat that you do not understand. Why should I defer all the updates ? You say like you block all updates and update at the end of the year, it's not like that at all. Win10 20H2 is super unstable POS OS. Yet you are naive of that information. Esp Patch Tuesdays at Woody have so much of info on how unstable this is.

Just shut up and do not spread disinformation if you have anything to say that helps with achieving Win7 on the Z590 share it else keep it shut. Oh and also do you realize it's from 2015 when Threshold 1 was released and full of bugs and it took more than 3 years to beat Win7 desktop marketshare, basically until 2018 Win10 was under Win7 netmarketshare at less than 42% of world wide desktop os share. These are called facts. Not unsubstantiated stupid posts.
  • WaltC - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

I run nothing but advance beta versions of Win10 not released publicly--speaking of stability, can't recall the last time the system crashed it was so long ago. Anyone who cannot get Win10 running stable simply doesn't know what he's doing, imo, as it requires very little effort to do so, if any. I have no irrational paranoia about being "spied on", either....;) People who think other people want to see their pizza, grocery, and other eCommerce orders are nuts, imo. It's amusing how people think to guard their systems as if they held more gold than Fort Knox, when the reality is nobody is interested in what's in their systems--it's totally boring.
  • Oxford Guy - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

MS has put all the resources that would go into things like good UI into making sure the stability is there so the spyware won't be interrupted.

Why so many motherboards for a product (Rocket Lake) that is outclassed before it is even available by the Zen 3 processors from AMD.
  • Oxford Guy - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

Mindshare. Intel still means better FPS to some gamers. I also hear AMD’s CPUs are hard to get, except for the 5800x which some believe is overpriced. My local MicroCenter was out of all but that one. I just checked and it has exactly 1 in stock. That’s it for the entire line.
  • Deicidium369 - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

LOL - except it isn't - Zen 3 is nothing but more and more cache to cheese the synthetic benchmarks and impress the rubes. When you actually get a 5900X and a 5950X as I have you start to realize, that like the 6900XT - all AMD smoke and mirrors and little substance.

Rocket Lake will wreck Zen 3 - and all the fanboyism won't change that - and one big plus for Rocket Lake is that it will be available in volume while TSMC scraps to get supplies - and Apple has priority - then AMD for the consoles - and whatever small crumbs that are left go to the AMD PC products. New microarch vs cache masquerading as a CPU - easy Intel win.
  • eva02langley - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

    LMAO ROXXORMYBOXXOR

Just look at how stupid it sounds... you sound like this.

    1. ES of Rocket Lake are showing REGRESSION in performances even in games.
    2. It passes from 10 cores to 8 cores.
    3. The prices are still the same... way overpriced compared to AMD...
    4. AMD is looking like it will retain the performances crown in ST and MT performances.
  • Spunjji - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

"Rocket Lake will wreck Zen 3"
Mate, Intel's own leaked benches are already disproving that. You're bending language so hard here that apparently a maximum 5% performance advantage in cherry-picked games at 1080p = "wrecked", and that's at nearly 1/2 the performance per watt.

It's amusing to see how literally all of the Intel shills across multiple sites have switched to banging on about stock levels. Do you have a secret site where you coordinate this, or do you just copy each other naturally? 🤣

Lots of folks are looking for the 4th gen NVMe speeds. Also, they are getting more USB 3 and USB C ports that many of the newer cases come with located up front. Also, for those that don't need a video card, the 11th gen CPU's, the upper level ones, support HDMI 2.0 vs. HDMI 1.4 and have a different graphics chip, the UHD750. Other than these, there are not many other benefits however, cost wise at this time, its the same cost to spend on last years hardware so it seems more reasonable to buy this years hardware for the same price. It wouldn't be much value to take a 3 year old system and upgrade to this years hardware as the gains are not worth the cost.
  • Oxford Guy - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

Does running a display via Thunderbolt add latency?
  • croc - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

The issue I see here is that Intel's first foray into PCIe 4.0 seems designed to meet, not exceed AMD's efforts. If you are behind the competition, then just meeting their specs is not the way to get ahead. Then there is Rocket Lake's max core count. Max of eight, due to the backporting of the 10nm Sunny Cove cores onto the 14nm litho. OK, AMD's 16 cores may be a bit overkill (for gaming) given the lack of PCIe lanes on their AM4 socket, but Intel is replacing a CPU that topped out at 10 cores with a CPU only allowing eight...

Can't wait for the return of Gelsinger's return. I predict a large ship turning around at speed. Watch out for bow waves....
  • lmcd - Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - link

8 cores is plenty for this generation of memory bandwidth. The problem is that Intel's next gen will have "16" processors where 8 are full cores, while AMD will have a full 16 cores with all that bandwidth. This generation, Intel is competitive but late.

Why haven't they set a speed up to 4000 or 5000? They can keep XMP going just fine but wouldn't it be better to have systems automatically go that fast if they can?
  • Deicidium369 - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

JEDEC tops out at 3200 - the fastest OFFICIAL speed it 3200. I have Gskill DDR4 4133 on my Gigabyte Z390 / i9900K

and JEDEC speeds are the same for AMD and Intel
  • Duncan Macdonald - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

For most games the 5800x is the sweet spot due to only having one CPU chiplet so no communication between chiplets. The 5900 and 5950 with two chiplets lose on many games due to the cost of inter chiplet communications exceeding the benefits from the extra cores.
The 5900 and 5950 are best in programs that can make good use of all the cores (eg some video editing programs). For any game player with a 5900 or 5950, it might well be possible to get higher game performance by limiting Windows to only the first chiplet (using the numproc boot parameter).
  • Makaveli - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

I agree with you however the 5800X is really overpriced right now. So when you only have to pay abit more for the 5900X its looks like a far better deal. I think once Rocket lake is out we should see a price correction on the 5800X so the time to buy those will be in March.
  • yeeeeman - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - link

This....this is wasted resources IMO. There was no need to make another platform on 14nm when they have the 10th gen which is just fine. I mean, the 10900k/10700k are great CPUs still, even compared to 5000 Ryzen series, so I don't know...they should've focused the efforts on bringing Alder Lake and its successor platforms forward.
Hope Pat will make a bit of order here and make the schedules and ambitions of Intel a bit more daring, cause Bob just...milked it like there is no tomorrow. Refreshes after refreshes and refreshes.

The price of the PRIME Z590-A cannot be right. That has always been the fully-featured variant of an entry-level Z-chipset model. The Z490-A costs just over 200 $ now. Is this because of the VRM setup? Who needs 16 phases on a board like this? You will not buy this for extreme overclocking anyway.
All these ASUS prices seem ridiculous.
  • Targon - Thursday, January 21, 2021 - link

And I thought the X570 chipset boards were a bit crazy when it comes to prices, these are off the rails on the crazy train! I am all for having a POST code display, but OLED screens to see on the motherboard what this or that is also seems like a waste of money. If you can get the machine to POST in the first place, going to the BIOS to get data about what is going on with this or that is enough. A waterblock for those who plan to use liquid cooling will also add to the price, no question, and it isn't a bad idea, but some of these other things that just add to the price without adding functionality is what I have a problem with.
  • PaulHoule - Friday, January 22, 2021 - link

    Ugh.

I've never found motherboard reviews that helpful and the last article I read on this site makes me feel worse about it because now I know the performance of a system I build might depend more on the turbo behavior of the motherboard than on the CPU.

I've often found that getting a motherboard is a crap shoot and frequently you find that a particular motherboard has limitations on what you can do with the PCI lanes, or a component that had 35 db of noise for the reviewer has 50 db of noise for me and so forth. I see that $1800 motherboard and I ask myself, "do they make enough of these that they really know that the analog audio path is clean?" and such.

Last time I built a system I had to replace about half of the components at least once to get something I was happy with.

These days I'm inclined to go to a system builder just to have somebody to RMA it to, but if reviews were useful I might go back to building a system myself.

How's the Biostar Z590 board? It looks like they're going back to more high-end specs and this one might be a good one to try out. When will we see reviews?

There is an VERY IMPORTANT ERROR in this article about the Asus Z590 gaming series motherboards - one that has potentially just cost me a chunk of the £320 i paid for one!
In the article above, it states that the Z590-F Gaming WiFi motherboard will run in either x16, x8/x8 or x8/x4/x4 modes. THIS IS WRONG! The board will actually only run x16 for PCIe slot 1, if you have a card in slot 2, it drops to x8/x4 not x8/x8. for me this is a complete deal breaker as I have an RTX3070 and an LSI SAS RAID card which runs at PCIex8 - and is now running at x4 :(

Are there any Z590 mobos that do not have a PCIe switch between the socket and the gen4-capable slots?
If not, what motherboard has the best throughput @ Gen4?
Looking to plug in something like a Mellanox ConnectX-6DX which can do 1x200GbE / 2x100GbE, and want best possible bandwidth.

Only one PCIe slot is 4th gen on all of these current motherboards. The other one or two M.2 slots are 3rd gen so you don't need to bother spending more money on your other NVMe storage devices.

Regarding your z590 Vision D description:
“ Finishing off the rear panel is a pair of Intel I225-V 2.5 GbE controllers, with Intel's latest AX210 Wi-Fi 6E CNVi, which also includes support for BT 5.2 devices.”

The article is in need of a correction: this board comes with the AX200 chip, not the ax210.

Yeww ... a PS/2 port? I didn't know we still live in the 90s. Every time I start shopping for desktop upgrade, my search gets halted when I see PS/2 ports, VGA port, HDMI port or USB 2.0 port - it just makes me want to puke. And what's up with the motherboards that have 5 different video outputs? Pick a standard and stick with it! If I need to switch connectors I will use an adapter.

P.S. Can we for ONCE see a motherboard with a decent amount of PCIe slots(I would like to see mATX with two x16 and two x4, none of that useless x1), no old USB ports but only the latest USB-C(we know how to use USB adapters and hubs), same type of video output(preferably something that supports the latest video standards), and NO legacy ports !!! Oh and if possible at least 3 M.2 NVMe ports, to allow for a decent RAID.

Ah crap, I forgot - and a dual 2.5Gb LAN please. Some of us can no longer have their workloads on legacy 1Gb connections.

Does the Asus Prime Z590-A Motherboard have a Third-Party USB Controller? Gensys Logic? I have an Asus Prime Z590-A it has a Gensys Logic USB Controller. Why would they not use the Intel Z590 Chipset USB controller.
