Do you guys also get a PS5 box?
  • Ryan Smith - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

Unfortunately not. I have one on order for myself, but assuming that it even arrives on time, for obvious reasons I won't even get it until launch day.
  • alphasquadron - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

Wow, if you guys can't even get one, what chance do I have of getting a preorder. How am I supposed to celebrate Thanksgiving without a PS5. This is ridiculous.
  • krazyfrog - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

I'm afraid your family will have to eat a turkey instead of the PS5 this year.
  • Quantumz0d - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

No RTX 3080, 3090, 3070 reviews ? Why is this bullshit box being reviewed at AT ? DF shills for these stupid consoles to space. Just review the damn GPUs FFS and there has been a report of bug on HDMI 2.1 too, would have been much better if you guys cover that. This MSM garbage is plastered all over the internet. AT is not for this.
  • Teckk - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

Wow, relax there. Go read Ryan's article on the RTX cards, he mentions that reviews are on the way. Also, this & P5, both fall under tech stuff and people want to see them reviewed too. Just because you're not interested in it doesn't mean no one else is.
  • TheinsanegamerN - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

The "reviews" have been promised for weeks now. I get that Ryan was impacted by the fires, but this is the same blame game line that anandtech pulled years ago for the macbook reviews that never came out.

At some point the phrase "shit or get off the pot" springs to mind. Of course Quantum is going way off the deep end in his response, but there is a real frustration with anandtech falling further behind on reviews while plastering "deals" and " articles' that would look at home on WCCFtech
  • Teckk - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

    Fair enough.
One more thing though, they're (with other reviewers) under embargo in terms of what they can show for the Xbox. The full reveal will have to wait until Microsoft says it is OK to do so and yeah until then it's gonna be only pictures.
  • eek2121 - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

People are attacking you, but you are honestly telling the truth (though you could have worded it a bit better).

AnandTech has been going downhill for years. We have their parent company to blame for that. I do hope Ian, Ryan, and the others find a way to get out from under this problem soon.

  • brucethemoose - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

    Chilllll.

Besides, these consoles are very interesting from a technical perspective. And you'd be hard pressed to assemble a more powerful PC for the same price.

Personally, I'm interested in all the accelerators MS has managed to stuff into this thing than. Video, storage, compression(?), sound dsps, raytracing... theres an ASIC for everything.
  • TheinsanegamerN - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

But we dotn get any of that. All we get here are some pictures and commentary.
  • Brett Howse - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

The embargo today was for unboxing. We are not allowed to discuss anything else at this time. If you don't want to see it, I am sorry. Others may.
  • Magnus101 - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

The "hard pressed to assemble a more powerful Pc for the same price." is not a strong argument here at anand since the tech interested majority already have a PC that is powerful enough for gaming and the only thing that you pay for is an upgrade to the GPU.
I mean the choice would be between upgrading the GPU for the PC you already have or buying a whole new console.
This advantage seems to be forgotten.
For me the insteresting thing with the consoles is that I want them to be as much powerful as possible so that ports from the consoles will take better advantage of an ever increasing GPU power for the PC during the lifecycle of the Console version.

Quantumz0d. - Hows about not reading the article if it triggers you so much?
Hows about taking your self-important self off this website and go elsewhere?

I for one thank Anandtech for the hard work they do and providing this article, they have been doing analysis on consoles every generation and I always look forward to them.

So please stop being a snowflake who complains about MSM.

The XSX is the one that I want, but the design is awful. On its side, its going to take up 4U, unlike the Xbone X that only takes up 2U. It sounds like they prefer it stand upright like the Mac Trash Can Pro, but what entertainment center/console has 12" high shelves? I think I'll wait for the revision hardware in 2021/22. Hopefully they'll make the next high-end model conform to a more standard form factor.

That wide open grille on the top seems designed to ensure maximum damage occurs if liquid is spilled on the machine. It may be intended for vertical mounting but the design of the top grille requires horizontal mounting (or being in some form of protective enclosure).
This is an open invite for a third party to make a protective top that is suspended two or three inches above the XBox to stop liquid ingress.
  • NoodlesK - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

Or it could be designed to ensure hot air escapes the enclosure, not sure why they would want to do that though.

Wow, guess some people got out of the wrong side of the bed / had someone piss in there cereal this morning / or maybe can't read

No where does it say is a review.
The specific words are "First Look" / "Unbox" and FYI this is dictated by MS and same goes for the PS5 from Sony.

All "Reviews" are currently first look / Unboxings as they cannot do a review of the units yet.
  • Dahak - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

their **** wish for an edit button
  • wrkingclass_hero - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

Wow, an "unboxing" with no box whatsoever, just the console alone or the controller alone (but not together!) floating in a sea of white nothingness. Tremendous.
  • morello159 - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

Holy crap the entitlement in these comments.... as if you're owed anything from a tech blog...
  • Jumpedup - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

No optical out, no Kinect support and no hdmi in means it is not a drop in for my One X. I have three Xbox Ones and none of them will be upgraded.
  • Calista - Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - link

A bit embarrassing they are not shipping the controllers with rechargeable batteries in the year 2020. Sony did it in 2006 with the PS3. Yeah, I know rechargeable batteries can be bought afterwards, but MS is asking €25 for them which is more than likely like ten times the cost of manufacturing.
  • lmcd - Thursday, October 29, 2020 - link

I prefer my rechargeable AA batteries personally. The non-standard battery phenomenon only makes sense on devices not expected to last more than 3-4 years. My Xbox One controllers are older than that.
  • StevoLincolnite - Thursday, October 29, 2020 - link

    I prefer AA batteries.
It's not hard to get some NIMH batteries and keep a few fully charged so you can hot swap batteries when they go flat.

Then you don't need super long cables across the room to charge the controller and crap.

Plus batteries are only good for a finite cycle... About 1000~ all told for lithium.
My Xbox 360 would have controllers fully cabled by now if they had lithium cells, I keep my consoles for generations.

How close to being a normal PC is the Xbox Series X?
Are these devices able to have an alternative operating system installed? It would be interesting to read some directions about installation of macOS on such a machine. Or Windows: either one.
