Yes, they have both 700MHz Band 12/n12 and 600MHz Band 71/n71. It looks like they literally just updated the product page in the five minutes since I last posted below.
It has 700MHz, or Band 12/n12...but can this be? It doesn't have support for 600MHz Band 71/n71? That's gotta be a typo. The iPhone 11 has support for Band 71.
It's more about how AT used to be a place for computer hardware, but hasn't had anything about new NV GPUs at all but it's straight on the new iPhone as it is now more about mobiles than PCs.
This is total hogwash. Firstly, Anandtech has been providing extensive coverage on new iDevices since the original iPhone, so no, this isn't "new". Secondly, this doesn't looking like nothing about the new Nvidia GPUs to me: https://www.anandtech.com/show/16057/nvidia-announ...
If you've somehow *honestly* managed to miss the multiple explanations for why the 3080 review hasn't happened: it's because a huge chunk of their reviewer's state has been ON FIRE. Personally I find it hard to view all these doomsaying shitposts as anything other than a deliberate attempt to drive traffic elsewhere.
Unless you have the ability to go back in time and prevent the California fires, the next best thing you could do is STFU and wait. The endless bitching won't change anything.
they havent managed to miss the posts about why the rtx 3000 review had been delayed, they just dont care to actually read, and insteas, keep crying about it
In the livestream Apple claimed that removing the charging brick was for environmental benefit, and that users all had extra chargers laying around already. This is purely marketing BS and motivated by profit margins instead of actually helping the environment, because the vast majority of people who buy iPhone 12 will have to buy a new charger anyway, since the new iPhones ship with a lightning to USB-C cable instead of lightning to USB-A. If Apple really cared about the environment, they'd ship a more durable braided cable instead of a crappy plastic one that breaks every couple months.
They should include everything in the box, it’s an objectively bad user experience to sell essential accessories of a product separately. If anything it’s more of a negative environmental impact cuz now they’d need make additional packaging for the charger…
This is clearly a profit margin motivated move, has nothing at all to do with being better for planet Earth.
I think it's really for both reasons and I'm OK with that but then I have several new chargers in the original Samsung and iPhone boxes in a drawer and I feel it's very wasteful..
I finaly got a new phone with USB-c and hence need either converters or a new charger (at work) because old stuff is all micro-usb. Same thing if I would switch to apple. It's a bad move because its an argument for Android user to not switch to apple.
You can get multi-packs of adaptors from the usual suspects very cheaply to update your cables. I tried out an iPhone recently and for some reason USB-C to Lightning adaptors are much more expensive.
If you had any older iphone, you will have also usb-a --> lightning cable. Otherwise they sold those too, but it's clear profits move, i.e. to keep the price the same. no adapter = cheaper for them no headphones = cheaper for them and what a lot of people miss: smaller package, actually a lot smaller = less logistics (transport) expenses and thus cheaper for them
So basically the phones are more expensive in reality no matter how you put it. Maybe for some it will be better with what they did instead of having a higher price tag, but the fact stays - more expensive iphones this year.
Also in all honesty the charger+headphones realistically only save $10-15, if that. So it's not that they save money by not including them in the box, they make more money by selling them on the side since they wouldn't retail for just $15.
>the charger+headphones realistically only save $10-15, if that No, more like half that. Adding to how flimsy their cables are, when mine snapped at the Lightning end I bought a 3rd party braided cable instead.
The EU has been pressuring Apple for years to stop selling charging bricks with every device. And they can ship 70 percent more phones in the same area as phones with the bricks. People do have them already (I must have 15 or 20 around the house) and they're certainly not going to include the $39 MagSafe chargers in the box for free. So you can claim it's just PR, but the environmental impact is significant, the Pro model prices did not go up, and the 12 only went up $100 and has way better technology (don't even mention inflation). What I see is a bunch of whiny entitled people who think they deserve to get things for less simply because they'r cheapskates.
And let's not forget even bigger price increases on 5G phones from the competition. You think Qualcomm is a charity? (They are jerks, not a charity.)
They've been pushing for companies not to include new chargers for some time now. That's part of the point of the common charger, as that on its own wouldn't make much difference to e-waste. AFAIK there's no actual legislation to force companies not to include the charger, but it's a long-standing agenda.
The EU plan for a common charger is part of a driver to reduce electronic waste. It shouldn't need spelling out that shipping chargers with new phones goes against this.
the EU wants *everyone* to stop pumping out new bespoke chargers with every new device. Again, that's the *entire point* of them pushing a single charging standard.
They provide an overview for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for several phone manufacturers, including Apple, to move to a common charger with the vision of eventually selling phones without chargers. The EC argues in the first press release that "Consumers will not need to buy a new charger together with every mobile phone" and "Consumers will be able to purchase mobile phones without a charger, thus logically reducing their cost. They will also be able to purchase much more cost-effective stand-alone chargers than it is currently the case". The second press release states "In the future...The number of chargers will be reduced", and "people will no longer have to throw away chargers when buying new phones".
Now, this MoU is old (it lists micro-USB as the recommended standard, lol), so it is possible that the EC removed the goal of shipping phones without chargers when they moved to the USB-C connector. However, I haven't found any evidence of this. Does anyone have a source that overrides this EC MoU with one that wants phone companies to keep shipping phones with chargers?
15 or 20 around the house? Really? I have two. One super 100w+ for the Surface and travel, the other one for phone charging. I do also have two wall sockets that have usb built in.
In the apple eco system you can over time accumulate a big bunch of USB-A chargers from iPads, phones, AirPods, other usb devices. As long as you have a USB-A to Lightning cable you can use those old chargers. Now Apple is including a USB-C cable, and there are likely not nearly as many of those chargers laying around. So mostly use supply of Lightning to USB-A devices in the short term.
What's the benefit to "the environment"? There's nothing wrong with throwing things away. Modern landfills are incredibly good and well-engineered. I'm not aware of charging bricks being hazardous waste. I think they're mostly plastic and copper, so it should be fine to toss them. Environmentalism is often irrational and built around arbitrary abstractions, symbolism, and virtue signaling.
One of the most clueless comments i have read on here. If you think dumping non biodegradable waste into landfills is an ideal way to go about things, you simply don't have a clue or are deliberately being obtuse.
What could possibly be wrong with burying non-toxic things in the ground? The problem with burying toxic things in the ground is if they affect water systems...
The irony of posting about "arbitrary abstractions, symbolism, and virtue signalling" in a post that contained only anti-environment propaganda. Your post is PURE virtue-signalling (you only disagree on the virtues), while actually taking action not to create more e-waste is the opposite of virtue-signalling.
Constantly manufacturing new things we don't need from limited materials pulled out of the ground in resource and labour-intensive extractive processes (often involving slave labour, or something close to it) is insanity. No amount of pseudo-rationalist waffle will change that fact.
Its not actually BS! My family has 4 iPhones currently. We have 4 chargers, 4 earbuds already. For the new USB-C port just buy a new USB-C cable or use your existing cable from other phones. What the matter with increasing so many cables and chargers at home with each phone purchase?
If you are spending $750+ on a phone then you can probably stretch to $11 for a branded charger. Don't fall for Apple's marketing. Other companies can produce things that don't catch fire.
Hmmm, and the battery capacities are 2227, 2775, 2815 and 3687mAh respectively. The UWA on the Pro Max also seems to be different, only on this model was the UWA suggested to be "expansive".
Thick phone, with big battery, from apple? That will never happen. Most people prefer aesthetics. Even if they could do it as an additional, niche model, it would cause battery life anxiety for customers looking to purchase the thinner, regular model. That anxiety would not be good for the bulk of their sales.
You and a few other imbeciles don't count as "most people". Many things such as cars or houses can be big and beautiful but the iPhone can't. Why? Because to you, everything Apple does is perfect.
wasn't it St. Steve who said an iPhone would never be bigger than the palm of the hand, or some such? wasn't it also St. Steve who insisted colour monitors were silly?
I was a bit bored with this one. Seems like too much sacrifice for cost and other features just for 5G, apparently they chose it as easier to market than ProMotion this year with the given battery budget. But the 12 costing 130 more than the 11, having cut the cost of the box, a carrier subsidy included in the marketing price, and the big camera updates being for the Max...Eh. Imo they chose wrong, if not for marketing to most people then to me.
Even with the usual interest in the chips they're quite obviously avoiding comparison with the A13 directly as it's not a big jump apart from the ML engine.
Maybe the iPhone 13 will be all that, smaller notch, ProMotion, one of these downsampling 64MP sensors, and not to mention 5G that doesn't zonk your battery...
I'm pretty sure the 13 will have 120Hz. There was talk Apple had samples made with and without it but because they could not get 75 million LTPO displays+backplanes manufactured in time they had to drop it this time as they didn't want to delay launch any further. LTPO is pretty cool, it allows the display to scale dynamically between 1Hz and 120Hz, I guess they weren't happy with displays where you can only chose between 60Hz and 120Hz, they want dynamic scaling for best battery life.
Yeah, 5G Radios is something they can stamp out now. But the ProMotion displays only come from Samsung in limited quantity. So I think that was the deciding factor. Besides, would anyone realistically want a 120Hz Display on an iPhone when they still have that fugly notch and crap aspect ratio?
I think the A14 is a decent advancement over the A13, but they used all that efficiency gains to give a minor speed boost, extra AI-ML cores, more stable thermals, and spent the rest of that "efficiency-budget" on the thirsty radios.
The next iPhone hopefully embeds FaceID underneath the display, so ZERO holes/notch. And hopefully they move away from this crap 19:9 aspect ratio to a more useful 21:9 standard (Ultra-Wide, for Cinema and Modern Games). And once that's done, they can throw the 120Hz ProMotion on top of it. I like the new ergonomics. The Apple A15 will probably be a minor speed upgrade from the A13/A14 as well, as all it's efficiency gains would be spent balancing out the extra drain from the Dynamic Display. Otherwise, they will have to bump up the battery capacities to at least 3,000mAh (mini), 3,500mAh (pro), and 4,000mAh (max). The A15 SoC will probably be the point where they start diverging the Mac processors from the mainline.
I second your thoughts on the pro-motion dynamic display being a factor on not releasing it this time. Probably slightly smaller batteries this year, offset somewhat by all models being oled and A14 efficiency improvements. It will be nice to see if the GPU can sustain frame rates better than A13 did.
I disagree with aspect ratio comments though. Thank you for a thoughtful and useful post.
12 is closer to 11 pro (actually objectively better overall phone than 11 pro) than 11, you clearly have no clue what you are talking about. It's a steal for just 100$ more.
My favorite upgrade is the much lighter weight for the 12 vs the 11, and the OLED screen. If you really want to help the environment, make the phone USB-C standard, this is pathetic Apple. The only waste is people having to buy two different standards for their home. Lack of 120hz is sad too. $100 price increase is also sad.
"The iPhone 12 & iPhone 12 mini - Extremely intersting value iPhones" How's inter-Sting is different from Outer-Sting and what any of them have to do with the word "interesting" /s
They are getting tricky with those performance claims. First with the iPad Air they compared it against the A12, which fair enough, it was the last thing in an iPad Air. This year they said "A14 is the fastest chip in any smartphone, in fact, it's up to 50% faster"...Leaving it to on screen text to clarify that this was against some way behind Qualcomm chip, with only a modest gain vs A13 on the CPU and GPU.
First place is first place, but it does seem to confirm those seemingly small performance gain numbers vs A13 if you worked it out.
I think one of the reasons apple didnt brag about effeciency is because they have no battery life improvements. Sources say apple reduced battery life in the new phones so my guess is the A14 is more ( expect a big upgrade to small ICESTORM cores, they have 33%increase in L1 cache) effecient butsince they redced the battery their effeciency claims would not be applicable in real life. I also expect the finer details to be saved for the ARM mac event
No, The A13 was already 50% percent faster in CPU than the snapdragon 865 and 30% faster in GPU compared to the snapdragon 865. So GPU figures are believable, The CPU should be at the very least 70% better. Apple doesnt use any common benchmark tool to measure performance as I know of,so we can't compare yet. But if it interests you here are some geekbench 5 numbers. https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/13122304853... If this is legit, The A14 is 19 percent faster in ST and a whopping 27 percent faster in MT . The MT perf means that the power efficiency cores should be at least 40 percent faster than the ones in the A13 which is a huge improvement, but apple can't brag about it because they have reduced battery sizes and 5g to compensate for that. Whats the use of bragging about the new effeciency cores when they don't mean anything in the real world. But they are really fast(33% improvement in L1D AND L1I caches) and apple will brag in MAC event.
Ah, thank you! I’m on the 11 pro max so I don’t see the need to upgrade at all with 12. But they’ve got to be more clear on battery life. No mention at all in the entire event. 🤷🏻♂️
>The A13 was already 50% percent faster in CPU than the snapdragon 865
That's not true, total CPU performance was similar between the two. The SD 865 had an disadvantage in single core but multicore was the same basically.
> A big surprise was the announcement of the iPhone 11 mini, > In terms of cameras, the iPhone 12 devices seem to offer the same sensor modules as on the 11 series
Purely a guess, but one reason why Apple might not want to max out the performance of its newest phone SoC is that they might prefer to leave some healthy distance between their big phone SoC cores and their upcoming laptop CPU cores. If the laptop CPU cores would be only 10-20 % faster than the iPhone's big cores, it would make the All-Apple designed laptop CPU look less grown up. Plus, the iPhone SoC is still faster than any Android phone SoC out there, so Apple doesn't have to work that hard to stay in front.
Apple is working on a 10%higher clocked version of A14 for laptops as far as we know, combine that with memory bandwith advantage seen in IPADS over IPHONES, id say they are about 13%percent faster in ST performance than vanilla A14, with more cores of course, they should beat zen 3 by 3-5% at less than half the power
How can they be claimed the "beat" Zen 3 when we won't be able to run the same applications / OS on them? A14 is damn good, but it's not actually competing with Zen 3.
They can go all out with SOC for a laptop, no such a big restrictions about power consumption/heat. Be sure it will be a totally custom design with a lot more power than A14 or even the ipad (that is quite thinner than laptop + no fan and less cooling overall).
>Be sure it will be a totally custom design with a lot more power than A14
I don't see why it would be a totally different design. Macs are not very high volume any, it doesn't make sense to do a totally different design for them.
Unless the specs page is wrong or I'm not reading it right, the iPhone 12 Pros don't have night mode on the telephoto. All cameras do have deep fusion and smart hdr 3. The non-Pros are the same but since they don't have a telephoto, those have night mode for all cameras.
On the 11 Pro low light telephoto was quite good. It would work until the night mode would kick in (which is a lot lower light than previous iPhones).
UWA is pure crap in low light... The amount of noise is crazy and then Apple nazi noise reduction turns all those noisy pixels into a batch of oil paint. It has no autofocus, no OIS and smaller aperture. I do not see a reason to miis out on night mode telephoto.
As it is now, Apple just crops in and then upscales (!!!) wide camera night mode for "telephoto" image .
I've been holding my tongue for over a year, but not today. AnandTech is a major website and publisher, but the quality of the writing and editing is alarmingly bad. The expectations for major websites are quite a bit higher than this. Why does AnandTech keep publishing articles full of typos? Why doesn't Andrei have an editor? This is like reading a random, low quality blog.
And what's with all the annoying British spellings? Are most of AnandTech's readers British? That wasn't my impression. The overuse of the strange word "whilst" has become pervasive, and all these ugly Britishisms likely slow down and distract American readers.
Why, are all the considerably broad and extravagant words hurting your grasp of the English language, or is it just not 'Murica! enough? Whilst I agree that the inordinate overuse of "whilst" could be paired down, the Americans butchered the English language with terrible spelling (bring back the U!!) and horrid oversimplification of words. Don't concern yourself too much Andrei, carry on using her majesties English, it is far superior to the drivel spouted by most other websites ;-) /s
There’s nothing wrong with the word ‘whilst’. It’s a common word in British English, I use it all the time. British people shouldn’t have to censor their native language just to placate angry Americans who want a hegemony on world culture.
While I have to point out the irony of a British person scolding someone from the USA for wanting a "hegemony on world culture", as a fellow Brit I'm otherwise inclined to agree 😉
Agreed, it’s disgusting behaviour to try and censor British people from using their own native language. This chap needs to learn to respect other cultures.
1. English spelling was all over the place prior to the printing press. The differences were much more drastic than the minor differences between UK and American English today. It was really the printing press, not the British peoples, that invented English spelling.
2. Sometimes the American English is more "authentic", which is counterintuitive. The example of color vs. colour is one. The American spelling is closer to the French original. It's all arbitrary, of course — but some people are really interested in the notion of authenticity due to who got there first.
Similarly, I have read the claim that Appalachians have an accent that is closer to how the English once sounded than modern British (i.e. the Eton/BBC standard). This is due to the way geographical isolation reduces language change. For the same reason Icelandic is the closest living language to old German.
I agree about the spelling: open an 18th-century writer with spelling intact, and it's often the "or," among others. Same story with the seemingly American em-dash and "Month d, year" date format. Older British books used that system. But I think what grates on people's nerves (including myself, who am South African) was the intolerance of the original poster, who seems to forget there's a whole world beyond the shores of the U.S. And what's more, and funny, is that the rest of us must quietly accept American English and culture invading every corner of our society. Obliterating differences is a loss of information, sadly.
Seriously? British spellings annoy you that much? We Brits have to put up with American spelling and grammar in pretty much every single article on the internet and we manage to cope just fine. Grow up mate. What a pathetic thing to get all uppity about. You can’t censor British people from existence, the world doesn’t revolve around America. We have a right to use our native language on the internet thank you very much.
"And what's with all the annoying British spellings? Are most of AnandTech's readers British? That wasn't my impression. The overuse of the strange word "whilst" has become pervasive, and all these ugly Britishisms likely slow down and distract American readers."
Please feel free to cry harder about it. 😂 As a British reader I spend most of my time online navigating Americanisms without complaint, so it's absolutely wild seeing someone loose their shit so spectacularly at the word "whilst" and a few differently-spelled words.
The price differences between regions are rather large and for example in Finland the new iPhones end up competing with different phones than in US. Here's the pricing in Finland: 829€ for the mini and 929€ for the regular.
In comparison Galaxy S20 FE is 679€, Pixel 5's EU pricing is about 620€ and OnePlus 8 is 499€. The most direct competitor for iPhone 12 is OnePlus 8 Pro, which at 899€ is still 30€ cheaper.
"In today’s presentation, Apple rather than alleviating these worries with more details, actually made me think of the worst-case scenario as they had made no mention of power efficiency."
I don't find it surprising that Apple is playing some of its cards close to its chest. And, I do think the most straightforward way to read the modest performance gains in this generation is indeed that Apple is coming to its senses and starting to treat energy efficiency as a more critical design objective.
As it happens, with new processing units gaining significance and a larger proportion of the silicon real estate in smartphone SoCs, if Apple is failing to reduce the power consumption of classical CPU cores then it will be, indeed, embarking on a course that is probably destined to fail. I doubt that Apple has found itself tripped up by incommensurable design objectives that result in processors that abysmally fail to miss the mark, but we shall see.
I suspect that Apple's inclination to make comparisons with competitive products in the market has a very particular justification. Declaring war on all of its competitors, whatever else it may do, does bring attention on Apple's new products lines (or particular strengths of its existing product lines). It seems to me that is what Apple wants right now.
That is not the reason why apple hasnt said anything about efficiency. Apple has reduced battery sizes by 17% so they knew that even if they bragged about the efficiency numbers they would mean nothing in the real world because of the addition of 5g and smaller capacities. How would it be if they said 40% more efficient chip but because of the mentioned factors, there is no increase in battery ife
They could easily have chosen to boast about the efficiency of A14 enabling new technologies and a slimmer profile - that's exactly how Apple normally spin changes like that. They didn't, though. It's pretty telling.
Not really, I remember that the times that they had bragged about the efficiency of their chips, they always mention battery improvements, even as little as the XS "+30 minutes" more than the X.
Apple doesnt use any common benchmark tool to measure performance as I know of,so we can't compare yet. But if it interests you here are some geekbench 5 numbers. https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/13122304853... Irrespective, the fellow makes a good point. I find Jaianiesh03's explanation of Apple's silence on energy efficiency to be straightforward and sensible. We will know whether it is the right explanation soon enough.
Yes, even with significant improvement in the energy efficiency of CPU cores it is unlikely that we will be seeing notably extended battery life for flagship smartphones in the 2020 - 2021 timeframe. The energy requirements of 5G modems, bigger NPUs and a growing list of special purpose processors being built into premium mobile SoCs will quickly negate any good news on battery life that follows from success in improving the efficiency of CPU cores. And, reducing battery size would make it even harder to deliver any good news on battery life.
"claims to be 4x more shatter resistant than past generation Gorilla Glass" - It'll still shatter if a cat looks at it from across the room.
"$699" is not a 'value' phone. It's there to ensure that the other options cost more. Low, middle and high. Consumer suckers fall for this all the time. Darn marketing. So naughty.
It is also sneaky having a 64GB model, which will be well nigh unusable, rather than starting with 128GB. Put some apps and music on it then record a few videos and it will be full.
Bear in mind the $699/799 pricing for the 12s is only on AT&T/Verizon. You can add thirty bucks to that for other carriers. Also I'm note sure if pricing really is inline with prior gens. Mini-flagships are cool but still somewhat niche. Better to compare the 6.1" 12 (non-Mini) to the 5.8" 11 - in which case there is a $130 price bump!
I was actually considering buying the iphone 12 6.1inch version, then I seen it still has that horrid notch, and now the price for a 128gb version in the UK is 850 pounds, that's shocking!!!Apple are just greedy,I'm going to buy a Poco f2 pro 128gb with a notch less screen for 250 UK pounds and spend the other 600 pounds on a Samsung 65 inch 4k TV from Curry's.
"For me, the iPhone 12 is set to be a big winner, given its similarity to the iPhone 12 Pro. You only lose out a telephoto module and the LiDAR module, and a bit of premium materials, but pay $200 less"
Are you sure? Pro version seems to be significantly heavier than the regular one. Could this be a battery?
A difference between a device that dies before the night comes and survives is IMO worth more than 20% lower price.
The problem I have with Apple doing away with the chargers and only including a single USB-C to Lightning cable is they did a piss-poor job weening its customers off of USB-A. It's had five years to slowly convert the populous to USB-C.
If Apple truly did care about less power adapters floating around out in the universe, then they could have switched to USB-C power chargers two or three iPhone generations ago, and included USB-C to Lightning cables with them. Then, doing something like, by removing the adapters, is a logical evolution and they would be lauded.
But, as it stands now, only a tiny fraction of customers have USB-C chargers, and in order to use the included cable, people will have to buy them in addition to the phones. Apple was one of the few companies that had the weight to affect mass adoption to the USB-C standard, and they screwed it up big time by doing it half-ass like this.
notice how these press release images only shows one phone, showing the front. it's because there are millions of people like me that despise the annoying notch. samsung made the right choice a year ago and went with the tiny hole. that at least is much less distracting. I am surprised these 12 series still has that big notch.
Why need Face ID anymore when the iPad has side mounted Fingerprint scanner ? I know the answer, because Apple invested money into that garbage Face ID technology so they want to make tons of return on that before removing it. The fact that people are used to a dead pixel zone on a fucking display in 2020. Peak of madness.
benchmarks are out today for the 12 series iphones utilizing AnTuTu. and they are not that good. big drops in performance across the board. that and the notches, no thanks.
I have seen some premium quality of kitchen appliances but it is on another website(https://www.100plusmall.com/). I have seen some genuine reviews regarding the product on social media plateform
Aaron L. smith is an author and international speaker who always comes up with new ideas for educators. His new book blank check is a gift for the new generation. You can get more information .At his website https://www.aaronsmithphd.com/
I have bad credit and I wanted to buy a good phone so I was planning to go for contract mobile phones for bad credit (https://megamobiledeals.com/contract-mobile-phones... because I don’t want the company to run a credit check and I will not clear it as well. I got some deals but going for an expensive phone is a mere necessity for me. I just wanted to check if the iPhone 12 series can meet my needs and should I spend the money on it or not. I got the job finally so I will buy this phone now and this review has really helped in clearing my doubts about the phone specs. I know where it lags and where it can be beneficial. Thanks.

If Apple really cared about the environment, they'd ship a more durable braided cable instead of a crappy plastic one that breaks every couple months.s.yu - Tuesday, October 13, 2020 - link

They should include everything in the box, it’s an objectively bad user experience to sell essential accessories of a product separately. You can get multi-packs of adaptors from the usual suspects very cheaply to update your cables. I tried out an iPhone recently and for some reason USB-C to Lightning adaptors are much more expensive.cha0z_ - Thursday, October 15, 2020 - link
If you had any older iphone, you will have also usb-a --> lightning cable. Otherwise they sold those too, but it's clear profits move, i.e. to keep the price the same.no adapter = cheaper for them
no headphones = cheaper for them
and what a lot of people miss: smaller package, actually a lot smaller = less logistics (transport) expenses and thus cheaper for them
So basically the phones are more expensive in reality no matter how you put it. Maybe for some it will be better with what they did instead of having a higher price tag, but the fact stays - more expensive iphones this year.

Sorry for the late response; I just saw this yesterday. Please check out these press releases from the European Commission (EC) back in 2009:https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail...
https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail...

In the apple eco system you can over time accumulate a big bunch of USB-A chargers from iPads, phones, AirPods, other usb devices. As long as you have a USB-A to Lightning cable you can use those old chargers. Now Apple is including a USB-C cable, and there are likely not nearly as many of those chargers laying around. So mostly use supply of Lightning to USB-A devices in the short term.Meteor2 - Thursday, October 15, 2020 - link
To be crystal clear, the EU have asked Apple to change to USB-C, but they have *not* asked anyone not to ship chargers with products. They want a common charging standard so it's easier to re-use old chargers and cables. That is *not* the same as not shipping new ones.

What's the benefit to "the environment"? There's nothing wrong with throwing things away. Modern landfills are incredibly good and well-engineered. Imo they chose wrong, if not for marketing to most people then to me.Even with the usual interest in the chips they're quite obviously avoiding comparison with the A13 directly as it's not a big jump apart from the ML engine.
Maybe the iPhone 13 will be all that, smaller notch, ProMotion, one of these downsampling 64MP sensors, and not to mention 5G that doesn't zonk your battery...
Hyper72 - Tuesday, October 13, 2020 - link
I'm pretty sure the 13 will have 120Hz. There was talk Apple had samples made with and without it but because they could not get 75 million LTPO displays+backplanes manufactured in time they had to drop it this time as they didn't want to delay launch any further.LTPO is pretty cool, it allows the display to scale dynamically between 1Hz and 120Hz, I guess they weren't happy with displays where you can only chose between 60Hz and 120Hz, they want dynamic scaling for best battery life.
Kangal - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Yeah, 5G Radios is something they can stamp out now. But the ProMotion displays only come from Samsung in limited quantity. So I think that was the deciding factor. Besides, would anyone realistically want a 120Hz Display on an iPhone when they still have that fugly notch and crap aspect ratio?I think the A14 is a decent advancement over the A13, but they used all that efficiency gains to give a minor speed boost, extra AI-ML cores, more stable thermals, and spent the rest of that "efficiency-budget" on the thirsty radios.
Featherinmycap - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
I second your thoughts on the pro-motion dynamic display being a factor on not releasing it this time. Probably slightly smaller batteries this year, offset somewhat by all models being oled and A14 efficiency improvements. It will be nice to see if the GPU can sustain frame rates better than A13 did.I disagree with aspect ratio comments though. Thank you for a thoughtful and useful post.

They are getting tricky with those performance claims. First with the iPad Air they compared it against the A12, which fair enough, it was the last thing in an iPad Air. This year they said "A14 is the fastest chip in any smartphone, in fact, it's up to 50% faster"...Leaving it to on screen text to clarify that this was against some way behind Qualcomm chip, with only a modest gain vs A13 on the CPU and GPU.First place is first place, but it does seem to confirm those seemingly small performance gain numbers vs A13 if you worked it out.
Jaianiesh03 - Tuesday, October 13, 2020 - link
I think one of the reasons apple didnt brag about effeciency is because they have no battery life improvements. Sources say apple reduced battery life in the new phones so my guess is the A14 is more ( expect a big upgrade to small ICESTORM cores, they have 33%increase in L1 cache) effecient butsince they redced the battery their effeciency claims would not be applicable in real life. I also expect the finer details to be saved for the ARM mac eventMarcusMo - Tuesday, October 13, 2020 - link

But if it interests you here are some geekbench 5 numbers.https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/13122304853...
If this is legit, The A14 is 19 percent faster in ST and a whopping 27 percent faster in MT . The MT
perf means that the power efficiency cores should be at least 40 percent faster than the ones in the A13 which is a huge improvement, but apple can't brag about it because they have reduced battery sizes and 5g to compensate for that. Whats the use of bragging about the new effeciency cores when they don't mean anything in the real world. But they are really fast(33% improvement in L1D AND L1I caches) and apple will brag in MAC event.

Plus, the iPhone SoC is still faster than any Android phone SoC out there, so Apple doesn't have to work that hard to stay in front.Jaianiesh03 - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link

Agreed, it’s disgusting behaviour to try and censor British people from using their own native language. This chap needs to learn to respect other cultures.Oxford Guy - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Two points, for clarity (for the pedantic):1.
Oxford Guy - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Similarly, I have read the claim that Appalachians have an accent that is closer to how the English once sounded than modern British (i.e. the Eton/BBC standard). This is due to the way geographical isolation reduces language change. For the same reason Icelandic is the closest living language to old German.GeoffreyA - Thursday, October 15, 2020 - link
Obliterating differences is a loss of information, sadly.Cakefish - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
We have a right to use our native language on the internet thank you very much.damianrobertjones - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link

So why exactly are British spellings bad and American ones good? On the basis of readership, it should probably be using Indian or Chinese English.Spunjji - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Indian English uses British spellings, for reasons that should be distressingly clear. Not sure about China, though...Spunjji - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
"And what's with all the annoying British spellings? Are most of AnandTech's readers British? That wasn't my impression. The overuse of the strange word "whilst" has become pervasive, and all these ugly Britishisms likely slow down and distract American readers."Please feel free to cry harder about it. 😂 As a British reader I spend most of my time online navigating Americanisms without complaint, so it's absolutely wild seeing someone loose their shit so spectacularly at the word "whilst" and a few differently-spelled words.

I think they must have read it as €81 when considering it a value phone.Mikad - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link

"In today’s presentation, Apple rather than alleviating these worries with more details, actually made me think of the worst-case scenario as they had made no mention of power efficiency."I don't find it surprising that Apple is playing some of its cards close to its chest.
Jaianiesh03 - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
That is not the reason why apple hasnt said anything about efficiency. Apple has reduced battery sizes by 17% so they knew that even if they bragged about the efficiency numbers they would mean nothing in the real world because of the addition of 5g and smaller capacities. How would it be if they said 40% more efficient chip but because of the mentioned factors, there is no increase in battery ifeSpunjji - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
They could easily have chosen to boast about the efficiency of A14 enabling new technologies and a slimmer profile - that's exactly how Apple normally spin changes like that. They didn't, though. It's pretty telling.dudedud - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Not really, I remember that the times that they had bragged about the efficiency of their chips, they always mention battery improvements, even as little as the XS "+30 minutes" more than the X.Jaianiesh03 - Thursday, October 15, 2020 - link
yeah also the xs had a smaller battery than the x and still outlasted itChrisGX - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Yes, that sounds about right.Jaianiesh03 - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Apple doesnt use any common benchmark tool to measure performance as I know of,so we can't compare yet.

You keep copy/pasting these same claims all over the place... why?ChrisGX - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Irrespective, the fellow makes a good point. I find Jaianiesh03's explanation of Apple's silence on energy efficiency to be straightforward and sensible. We will know whether it is the right explanation soon enough.Jaianiesh03 - Thursday, October 15, 2020 - link
because it was the same answer to the question my frnd. not to pick up a fightChrisGX - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
And, reducing battery size would make it even harder to deliver any good news on battery life.damianrobertjones - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
"claims to be 4x more shatter resistant than past generation Gorilla Glass" - It'll still shatter if a cat looks at it from across the room."$699" is not a 'value' phone. It's there to ensure that the other options cost more. Low, middle and high. Consumer suckers fall for this all the time. Darn marketing. So naughty.

It’s a little sneaky that by pricing iPhone 12 mini the same as iPhone 11, the regular iPhone 12 has effectively received a price bump.Jon Tseng - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
Cheers, int. comments on the SoCBear in mind the $699/799 pricing for the 12s is only on AT&T/Verizon.

I was actually considering buying the iphone 12 6.1inch version, then I seen it still has that horrid notch, and now the price for a 128gb version in the UK is 850 pounds, that's shocking!!!Apple are just greedy,I'm going to buy a Poco f2 pro 128gb with a notch less screen for 250 UK pounds and spend the other 600 pounds on a Samsung 65 inch 4k TV from Curry's.sonny73n - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link

"For me, the iPhone 12 is set to be a big winner, given its similarity to the iPhone 12 Pro. You only lose out a telephoto module and the LiDAR module, and a bit of premium materials, but pay $200 less"Are you sure? Pro version seems to be significantly heavier than the regular one. Could this be a battery?
A difference between a device that dies before the night comes and survives is IMO worth more than 20% lower price.

Stainless steel vs aluminium is going to be a big chunk of that.Farfolomew - Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - link
The problem I have with Apple doing away with the chargers and only including a single USB-C to Lightning cable is they did a piss-poor job weening its customers off of USB-A. It's had five years to slowly convert the populous to USB-C.If Apple truly did care about less power adapters floating around out in the universe, then they could have switched to USB-C power chargers two or three iPhone generations ago, and included USB-C to Lightning cables with them.

Besides signed a settlement in order to use Qualcomm modem for 6 years
