I just want to say how much I appreciate the title of this article. Great work.
  • deil - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

I will also endorse. Pure perfection. Try doing it with 1185g7, even intel did not try.
  • AMDSuperFan - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

This does not look like a good product for AMD fans. I am very concerned. Where are the products that can compete against someone? $560 and it doesn't even have a battery?
  • DiHydro - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

This is not a consumer product. it is for industrial applications were longevity and support are more important than initial price.
  • PeterEvans - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Did you have the idea that industrial applications should cost more for longevity? I actuality it is the exact opposite.
  • Spunjji - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

Re: the only factual part of your post, it's only about $100 more than the near-useless Atom-based "June Canyon" NUC, $40 more than the Coffee Lake DeskMini and nearly $200 less than the Comet Lake "Frost Canyon" NUC - and if you need any GPU power there's no contest between them. But sure, please continue to make disingenuous shitposts in order to feed the thrashing mess of worms inside your brain.

Thanks! We've reviewed a lot of NUCs over the years, including AMD ones. So it's an interesting challenge to try to come up with unique titles.

It's a pity the tech is 2 yrs old (Zen 14nm).
    What about:
    4700G
    4900HS
    4800U
AMD moving slowly to update all product categories but OEM'S are moving even slower. Who or what are holding them back? Does Intel incentives & previous market dominance delay OEM's releasing AMD products or does AMD have some blame?
  • 5080 - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

They do offer this unit with a 4800U, see my comment below.
  • DiHydro - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

This is an industrial mini-PC. Usually used for visual inspection systems, or running GUI controls for machines. They wouldn't need a whole lot of processing power, and would prefer a fully vetted and reliable system (shame about the GPU drivers). That being said, the Ryzen 4000 series is much more attractive for home and office use in the NUC space.

If users having some issue or facing some kind of trouble in RushCard Activation then users can Activate RushCard with us. And if users want to activate their Rush Card with us users didn’t have to do more hard things RushCard Activation. Users can activate their Rush Card with us in the minimum time possible.

The fact that AMD can/could still make these cheaply at GloFo without having any effect on their ability to produce Zen 2 parts probably plays a large part. The processors are doubtless available in higher volumes than Renoir.
  • 5080 - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Don't forget, they also offer a 4x4 with the new Ryzen 4000U mobile APU's. You can choose from a R3-4300U, R5-4500U or the top of the line R7- 4800U. Standard configuration includes two LAN ports a 2.5GB Ethernet and 1GB, USB 3.2, M.2 2280 and SO-DIMM 3200.

  • casteve - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

I agree, It's the 4000U series that should provide a compelling solution for these mini-PCs. I look forward to reviews of the Asrock boxes as well as Asus and others.

I with this thing would have a bit more metal on cooler/metal shroud on the fan. It's so close to being virtually silent and it's sad that even this chip was slightly throttled.
    I guess its modding time.
  • PixyMisa - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Yes, I thought I remembered seeinh a news item about that recently. Hope they can sent AnandTech one to review soon.
  • PyroHoltz - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Good find, big disappointed that they didn't review these new offerings.
  • PyroHoltz - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Off topic, where's the Anand Ampere review?
  • shabby - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Ian said Ryan is delayed due to the wildfires on the west coast.
  • PyroHoltz - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Thanks, I hadn't read that. The fires are pretty bad here in CA, hope everyone's okay.
  • nagi603 - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

I wish those were intel NICs instead of Realtek, but you can't win all.
  • webdoctors - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

    Love the title, haha.

I like the TDP specs of this as I built a low power home nas machine for storing surveillance videos and home automation scripts. But the pricing on this is TERRIBLE. I built a tiny SFF machine for ~$130! It was like $60 for the mobo+CPU, $50 case+PS, $20 RAM etc.

What niche is this thing trying to fulfill?
  • eastcoast_pete - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Thanks for the review, although I would have really liked to see a review of that unit with the 4800u Renoir chip. The long-term support of this unit is, of course, interesting if one deploys them in actual "industrial" settings. However, I strongly assume that most readers here would use a small format PC like this as HTPC at home, and would gladly trade the superior performance of an 8 core Renoir for the "long-term support". So, any chance of seeing that review here?
  • GreenReaper - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Why doesn't it use the 10GbE provided by the CPU, even at 1Gbps? Is it a question of power usage? Cost of transceivers? Reliability?
  • eastcoast_pete - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

10 GbE requires additional hardware (e.g. from Aquantia, or others); the situation is similar for many Intel-based systems. A number of current CPUs are capable of supporting 10 GbE, but all need the additional hardware. In contrast, 2.5 GbE can be implemented w/o adding much to the BOM, so more systems now ship with 2.5 GbE instead of just 1 GbE.
  • GreenReaper - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Also, AMD is playing silly buggers with links to its specifications; the one in the article on the model number just leads to a menu page for me. This link has a V1000-series product brief:

No USB-C ports on something that's supposed to last up to ten years?
  • PyroHoltz - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Good point. Maybe asrock knows something that we don't and usb-c is going to be replaced in the next 5?
  • Lord of the Bored - Wednesday, September 30, 2020 - link

I doubt the target market is going to be plugging any USB-C... whatevers. I think the only things that actually ship with a USB-C connectors are laptop "docks" and USB-grownup-connector adapters.

There's literally no benefit to USB-C in this segment.
  • PeterEvans - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Well I guess this is one way to get rid of the three year old laptop parts. Just put them together into a shoebox and call it "innovative". I am surprised it doesn't come with Windows XP.
  • eastcoast_pete - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Forgot to ask: how noisy is it, and how whiny is the fan?
  • nicolaim - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

    Article says it's noisy.
  • jabber - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

I bought masses of their quad core Atom/Nvidia GPU based ION boxes 10 years ago for folks and most of them are still working with later SSD/RAM upgrades. This looks like a decent replacement.
  • ivanovitch_k - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

lol at the included CD, larger than the unit itself :D !

When will mfg. do away with those factory-to-trash cederoms... ?
  • philtroy - Thursday, August 12, 2021 - link

    Hi

I am trying to find m.2 drives that will fit this and am having difficulty. I am wondering whether B + M M.2 drives will fit in M sockets (which is what I understand the 4X4 BOX-V1000M has). Interestingly, when I tried to find the drive discussed in the article, it appears also to be a B + M drive. (I am looking at the Transcend 256GB, M.2 2242 SSD, SATA3 B+M Key, TLC (TS256GMTS430S) which I found on amazon.ca for around CAD $70.00)

Also, any suggestions for ram. Obviously there ar a lot of choices. I wish to have 16gb, so presumably 2x8GB is what I am looking for. Does the brand matter or do I just look for one with four to 5 stars.

    Thanks . . .

    PhilTroy
  • philtroy - Thursday, August 12, 2021 - link

P.S. I am also wondering whether I can buy one 16GB memory device rather than two 8 gb devices, in case I decide to upgrade later.

    THANKS AGAIN!
