So it starts around $750, vs the Zenfone 6 at $500.
Also no 3.5mm, really makes this feel like an also ran.

There's tons of Samsung/Apple clones, we didn't need another.
Makes me sad, taking away features and vastly increasing prices.

Please Asus, bring back the Zenfone 6 as a "7 lite".

Even if you can't adjust it at it's original price, just make it widely available.
There's so few decent phones in the $500 range, at least in USA.

I missed out on the Zenfone 6, it wasn't available until months after I upgraded.
I ended up going with an S10e that I got on sale for under $500 new.
Even then I later tried to trade my phone for the 6, but it was very hard to find.

Decided to wait and hope there would be another version. Unfortunately you're already trying to copy everybody else, with high prices and missing features. If the Zenfone 6 wasn't a big hit, it's not because it was to cheap. It looks like you didn't get it to reviewers (so few people knew about it) and made it very hard to find.

Make it widely available with the original pricing. Let people know about it, send some to reviewers etc. If people hear about it, or can find it in store to compare with other phones, I think it'll be obvious how good it is for the price. As far as I could find, it was the only $500 retail phone with a high end SOC, a good battery, a headphone jack, and without a bunch of garbage cutting into the screen.

No way I could have afforded retail on my s10e, but if I had paid $750 for it I would have returned it. Even if I had to take a 20% hit on restocking fees, I think the Zenfone 6 was just a much better option and I still would have saved $100. Again, the only reason I don't have a 6 is because I didn't pay full retail for my phone, and the 6 wasn't available for months after I got it.

For me, and I think many others, price is a massive deciding factor. After that, we want a good quality reliable phone, with good battery life, and as much performance as possible. A decent quality, reasonably calibrated screen is also important. The headphone jack is also a major feature, especially for the budget conscious. There's no reason to replace good quality headphones with the hassle and expense of wireless junk. Forcing us to use dongles and adapters is also not a valid option.

This new Zenfone 7 is now completely out of the realm of normal people. Can it really compete with the expensive name brands? I think the people rich enough to afford $750 are vain enough to not even consider this. Why not just pay a tiny bit more for a Samsung or Apple? Heck Apple of all companies even has a phone for half this price. At the high end it's very obvious that people don't care about quality or features at all...just the social image they think it will get them.

The Zenfone 7 just doesn't make any sense, not at $750.
  • asfletch - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Your rant is spot on. I wanted a 6 for months but not only is it still unavailable in my country, when it was available it was more expensive than an S10+!
  • asfletch - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Available from overseas I mean. My kingdom for an edit button.
  • sonny73n - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

You idiots keep ranting about overpriced phones from Apple, Samsung, Asus... Do you know that you have other options to choose from? e. g. The Xiaomi Poco F2 Pro is $405 on Amazon right now.
  • iphonebestgamephone - Friday, August 28, 2020 - link

That doesnt work with all is bands, tard
  • AdrianBc - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

I agree with you. I have bought the cheaper Zenfone 6 in 2019 I am very happy with it. Therefore I have looked with interest at Zenfone 7. I would like to have some of the improvements, e.g. Cortex-A77, high display refresh rate and better cameras, but unfortunately they are not worth the more than 25% price increase and also the large increase in weight and size.
  • hansmuff - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

Agree and please, I can't call a manufacturer serious if they omit wireless charging in 2020 on a "PRO" model.

The first sentence in every phone review should tell whether there is a headphone jack, so as to not waste the readers' time.
  • alufan - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

honestly cannot understand this animosity for no 3.5 plug they are a royal pain in the ass with wires and such or you can just use a usb c adapter bluetooth is so much better and my headphones a have a life of 36 hours use
  • pjcamp - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Yeah. Having a giant dongle hanging out the bottom of your phone is so much better. You only think you need to charge it. And it will obviously never ever get caught on anything or accidentally be dropped on the dongle and wreck your charging port.
  • iphonebestgamephone - Friday, August 28, 2020 - link

Uh no you put the dongle attached on the headphones, wtf.
  • RSAUser - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Then I have to carry a dongle around, and I can't charge and listen to music/video at the same time.
Bluetooth = have to remember to charge again. Calls drop to hands-free, which is garbage.
  • itsjustaprankbro - Friday, August 28, 2020 - link

it's a great option to have 3,5mm. traveling? you can charge AND use headphones. want to play some great tunes at a party? use 3,5mm. using an old vehicle, van, car? use 3,5mm. it's just such a versatile audio output option, there is no reason for it NOT to exist.

like you can say one can survive without it. but HONESTLY, my Note 10+ feels like a HUGE downgrade from my Note 9. It lost SO MUCH and gained SO LITTLE. I have a tiny bit more screen. that's it. and a more unreliable fingerprint sensor. yay. I lost IR blaster, SPO sensor, 3,5mm jack, notification LED, everything.
  • Spunjji - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

Agreed. I've used phones with and without that port, and not having it is just tedious.
  • frodesky - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

  • Andrei Frumusanu - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

  • Drazick - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Does it still have built in Call Recorder?
    Is it still vanilla Android?

I hope this time its availability will be better than ZenFone 6.
    Asus has great phones.
  • itsjustaprankbro - Friday, August 28, 2020 - link

ASUS always had call recording in built. Though I always worry they might drop it in a future release. Not like they update their phones much at all - ASUS has a horrible track record with updates sadly.

I dropped my purchase decision for the 7 because they switched from IPS. I hate how I buy a PREMIUM flagship device with a PREMIUM CHIP, stereo speaker, big battery BUT I am not supposed to use it. Because if I do, I get image retention or burn in. YAY.

Guess the only bonus of AMOLED is that if you buy a used phone and there is no burn in, you know it haven't been used much. But otherwise, it sucks big time.
  • frbeckenbauer - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Oh come on, everything sounded so nice and then they drop the 3.5mm jack.
  • Tams80 - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

The battery life management and warnings, and LED notification light are good practices (even inspired by today's standards).

But then they went and dropped the 3.5mm socket. Nah, I'm interested anymore.
  • damianrobertjones - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

    "Nah, I'm interested anymore."

-Brain implodes at the complexity of your last statement.
  • SirCanealot - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

I was going to say, the battery management features look great, but I'm in the same position about the 3.5mm jack :/
I usually charge my phone to around 85-95% and try to only charge it fully when I need to. Phones I've done this with in the past have not really had any battery degradation after 2 years. Especially on this S10+ with a sealed battery, I'm taking care of it...
  • Quantumz0d - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Yep, complete BS move from ASUS. They are claiming it's the 5G !

What a garbage show, V60 has it with 5G mmWave and has a full ESS DAC, Xperia MK2 has it with 5G mmWave. They want to save a couple of cents and sell accessory bullshit like OnePlus, Google, Samsung and ofc Apple who started it all. Greedy bunch.
  • Alistair - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

6 months later, and still no quality $500 Snapdragon 865 phone in the market. Android is such a let down this year, not sure what happened, but 855 phones were everywhere in comparison.
  • BedfordTim - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Its the Qualcomm 5G problem. Manufacturers have to fit in a lot of expensive and large stuff to tick the box. This means expensive monstrous phones.
  • Alistair - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

The Note 20 (MKBHD calls it the NOPE 20) is another example of it. Everything is overpriced or underpowered. Wait for next March, this entire year is a write off for Android, but I expect the next iPhone to be the only good phone this year.
  • itsjustaprankbro - Friday, August 28, 2020 - link

I mean, the Note 10 was also junk. The Note 10 Lite / S10 Lite also had huge flaws. These devices are all MEH/10 in my book. Note 20 is just no different.

Price? Well, 5G ruined pretty much the entire market for no reason.
  • damianrobertjones - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

  • Spunjji - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

Do you know how much more they charge for the 865 than they did for the 855? Qualcomm are rent-seeking, and Apple and Samsung already proved out the case for absurdly expensive phones.

  • s.yu - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

Like what Huawei's continuously demonstrated for the past half decade?
They're also just calling it "innovative", which isn't exactly claiming originality or even strongly hinting at it, unlike Huawei who claimed to have invented the notch. If you call out every company who used the word "innovative" on something they didn't invent outright you'd be chasing after almost every company.

Naïve idea: Seeing as it's already motorised, wouldn't it be interesting to see some form of gimbal stabilisation integrated into the camera compartment? Admittedly it wouldn't work if the cameras are flush, but it seems like they're halfway to v-axis stabilisation if they developed the software for it.
  • Quantumz0d - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

This phone would have been my next phone and replace my V30, the LG V30 is a solid phone I charge it to 75-80% only from 30-40% everyday, so the battery life and capacity degradation is limited, they had Qnovo tech. It's a fantastic phone with all the ESS DAC 3.5mm, pro camera and Audio etc. But as the time passes by every single damn phone will have the battery problem, I will get it replaced by LG.

This phone is a good choice vs V60 / Xperia 1 Mk2. But damn they axed that 3.5mm jack off, now this phone is not interesting to me anymore, they are improving that camera module, old one had rattle and heated up. This one gets 200Hz touch controller, 90Hz OLED panel with more optics, the Micro SD Is a super good welcome on a flagship processor phone. It's also having LED indicator which is super neat. This phone will get BL Unlock too.

But alas ! 3.5mm jack is gone. No one can make a good phone which ticks all boxes - good battery, SD slot, 3.5mm jack, good optics. Shame on ASUS for dropping 3.5mm jack.
  • Quantumz0d - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

Damn the pricing is off the chart, the phone costs $750+tax base & $950+tax for Pro model. Without a 3.5mm jack and no Qi, no IP no 1440P screen. Now this is bullshit. They want us to pay top dollar for reduced components on a phone with 2-3 years of max life ? Bullshit.
  • Makaveli - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

I would have preferred they ditched the LED indicator for a headphone jack.
  • asfletch - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

I humbly disagree. I find AODs to be a poor replacement for the notification light. I still don't understand how people now know if they missed a notification while their phone was in another room...the AOD only lasts for a few secs, or if not it sucks precious battery life. I just don't get it.
For SD865 phones I think I'm down to Xperia 1 ii, this ZF7 and Poco F2 Pro now. Except really only the Sony and Poco because I want a headphone jack. Sigh.
  • s.yu - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

I'd have preferred that they ditched 5G :)
  • itsjustaprankbro - Friday, August 28, 2020 - link

THIS. So much this. But you just can't do it, thanks to Snapdildo.
  • BAFLGV20 - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

This phone looks like it's going to upset a lot of people. I be ASUS is kicking themselves in the teeth for not including a headphone jack. You do all this switching components around to givenan full display. Regardless of what's in the phone a headphone jack still could've been implemented. Heck put it on the bottom side of the damn flip camera and flip the camera to use the port for all i care, as long as there's a headphone jack. The phone still has a nice design with the almost symmetric bezel's. But, If there is no headphone jack couldn't you make the bezel's symmetrical. Looks like I'll be sticking with my modded LG V50 with it's snaggle toofh and SD855+/725MHz Adreno 640 (1TFlop) GPU with a Vapor Chamber. It's all anyone really needs right now. Even the LG V40 with the SD845 and Adreno 630 is all anyone needs. I refer to LG because of the feature set you get and the ultra low price the phone drops after just one year. After 2years I drops 2 3rds. My kind of deal. At least it has a 3.5mm headphone jack with a qDAC and a 3K adjustable screen with color and sharpness options. What good is a pair a Sennheiser 800HD's ($800 set of cans) If you can't plug them into a direct port. ASUS i like the phone, a lot, but, i don't live the dongle life or use Bluetheregoesmyqualitypooftooth, as I am an audiophile first and gamer/video consumtionist 2nd. Still do like the phone, just for the battery saving features.
  • s.yu - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

There's rumor that next year's Samsung Note may have the jack again, though I'm not counting on it, I'll wait and see if that turns out to be true because I also want the S-Pen. If it turns out a dud, I'll go buy a second-handed ROGP3 and use it with a 3.5-C dongle, because I need a magnetic charging adapter taking up one of the C ports at all times, so a spare C port is enough for me.
  • pjcamp - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

I bought a Zenfone 6 and loved it . . . right up to the point Asus said "Sure we enabled VoLTE in India, but you jerks in the US have to buy a new phone. No VoLTE for you!"
  • itsjustaprankbro - Friday, August 28, 2020 - link

I only have issues with VoLTE on my Mate 20 and my Note 10+. Hate that feature/thing. Honestly, you are better off without it, trust me.
  • Midwayman - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

So what exact does the flip camera get me? Just better quality selfies? An ultrawide and normal wide lens for would be useful for single person vs group I guess.
  • sonny73n - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - link

The flip camera gives you no stupid notch or punch holes in the display. Asus stole this design from Huawei and claim it’s their innovative design. Soon or later Apple and the US’ lapdogs bunch will release phones with motorized pop up camera and claim it’s theirs as well.

It's not new, and it's not even optical zoom, unlike this:

Finally, and OEM concerned about battery health! My opinion of Asus just went up 1000%.

The rest of the phone looks great too, assuming its moderately priced. Ip68, front speakers, 16:9 and 3.5mm would be nice, but you gotta cut costs somewhere.

Have you been under a rock all this time? Or maybe you’re an Asus’ shill. You sound like ass licking to me. Go on gsmarena and you’ll find plenty of phones with big batteries.

The best battery is the one that is user replaceable.
  • s.yu - Thursday, August 27, 2020 - link

It's called battery health, which most people would have consensus in it meaning slowing battery degradation, yet you come over and rant about the size of batteries and swapping batteries, are you just born like this or has trolling for Huawei made you dim?

Thanks Andrei! Overall, an interesting phone, the dropped 3.5 mm connector is a major downside, though. I find the overall concept of these flip-camera design phones interesting, but almost wish there would be an option (downgrade) to a manually operated flip mechanism, maybe with magnetic locks at key positions (in, half up, all the way over). I know that not being motorized would reduce the "cool gadget" factor, but I rather use my thumb and save myself the eventual headache when the electric motor goes on strike, which it will. Also, maybe Asus could use some of the saved space and money and bring the 3.5 mm headphone connector back.

Cars have wireless charging these days, and I'll be damned if I had to have some cable dangling about instead of just plopping the phone into the center console to charge. Or not use my charging pads at home.
