The high efficiency at low loads should help defray electricity costs with running Zen/Zen+/Zen 2 chips.
  • Operandi - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

And doubly effective when running 14nm Intel chips.
  • eek2121 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

This PSU does not work with Intel chips. It does not provide enough power. 😉
  • PeterCollier - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

    Ha! That's a good one.
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Well Cheap Chinese parts tend to work best with other Cheap Chinese parts....
  • South_DL - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

    Truth!
  • Spunjji - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

If you can't say something relevant, bash AMD! 😒
  • rocketman122 - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

Why the hell is it so hard to put the price in the first paragraph. Shet im getting tired of nonsense like this. I come here cause im tired of the younger crowd at th.com but then nonsense like this males me go back. And the fact reviews are not often enough. Once every 5 days to a week. Problems getting sponsored products to review?
  • Ryan Smith - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

Due to a lack of units in the US, there's currently no useful pricing available.

"At the time of this review, the PSU is readily available only in Asian markets. This is obviously because global shipping has been greatly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, but it makes it very difficult for us to reach a solid conclusion without knowing the retail price of the product"
  • StrangerGuy - Thursday, May 14, 2020 - link

Nah its because Asia is now the more critical market even before Covid. China never had the US drought of MSI B450 Mortar/Tomahawk boards during the Zen 2 launch period and AMD is more popular there than the US.
  • six_tymes - Sunday, May 17, 2020 - link

true, anything to help when running power hungry heat maker amd chips.
  • Icehawk - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Does it come with a set of brass goggles?
  • Spunjji - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Now this is a comment I can get behind 😎
  • 1_rick - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

They didn't even stick any[1] gears on it! How can they call it steampunk?

[1] I'm not counting the crude drawing on the fan.
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

I mean a little brass at least...
  • anirudhs - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Does Steampunk plan to offer SFX\SFX-L power supplies?
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Did you read the review? If you did you wouldn't care about anything else from this company.
  • lmcd - Monday, May 18, 2020 - link

They're a sane fan profile away from a solid power supply. Given that ITX loads tend to be even lower and less likely to use 3.3V and 5V lines, it's possible a market entrant with supply chain advantages could choose to undercut the 500W SFX-L power supply market.
  • ozzuneoj86 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Lets write Steampunk on the side of a product and not actually have any even remotely Steampunk themed cosmetic features.

Seriously... I know gears, brass and shades of brown aren't exactly new and innovative ideas, but I think it's actually worse to just use the name of a cliche "theme" without having any of it's features.
  • anirudhs - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Maybe a Bioshock special edition? :-P
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Hello Kitty - Steampunk Edition. Kitty was always OG - now she's Retro OG
  • Koenig168 - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

Put Hello Kitty on a PSU and it will sell like hot cakes!
  • drexnx - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

about the only PC parts you could style as steampunk would be heatsinks, fans, and water cooling components
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

oh all the parts that adults tend to put in their windowless PCs
  • PeterCollier - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

The name is actually a reference to the program Steam, which is a video game distribution platform created by Valve.

The name is just an extension of the machinery metaphor, not a reference to a subculture.
  • Operandi - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Oh..... is that what 'Steam' is? Huh, sounds pretty sweet, I might have to check that out.

Anyway..... if thats what its named after that actually makes it more stupid then being named after the uber nerd subculture.
  • Operandi - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Looks like an ok enough budget option. Though I don't know why I would go with this over a just as good Corsair.

The name isn't going to be doing them any favors in terms of marketing. I don't understand how it can be this hard for these Chinese based companies to get a grasp of how to market to the demographics they are targeting.
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Yeah ... need to market towards virgins and incels - so some Lolicon character with gigantic, big, huge, massive...... eyes.
  • PeterCollier - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

This is the truest comment I've ever read
  • mode_13h - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Hmm... Steam, punks, and PSUs don't exactly go well together.

And even if we take on the whole Steampunk aesthetic, it conjures images of big, heavy power supplies that might be the size of an entire PC case... for a small one.

So, maybe they need to do some more work on their branding, before they're quite ready to take over the global PC components market.
  • Flunk - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Writing SteamPunk on the side of something doesn't make something steampunk.
  • lilkwarrior - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Not interesting to me until a 1600W version comes out
  • lilkwarrior - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Also one that is digital to modularly remove OCP like the Corsair 1600W via Corsair Link; if it doesn't have that, it's pretty meh in the grand scheme of things.
  • lmcd - Monday, May 18, 2020 - link

nah the corsair 1600w is too heavy and slows down my maserati
  • atl - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

What is the steampunk in this CPU?
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

well it Clearly says Steam Punk on it - so it must be some new style of Steam Punk...
  • Deicidium369 - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

This is about as Steampunk as Hello Kitty. Not Seasonic, not going into my builds.
  • CrystalCowboy - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Seasonic is very hard to find at present. Lots of people building out their home computing, and disrupted supply chains.
  • Axiomatic - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Where do you put the water in? To make the steam, right?
  • South_DL - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

    Good point!
  • South_DL - Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - link

Not enough Japanese Caps, design not coming from a well known designer, nor innovative either, so, no thank! Go back with your communist party investment back to mainland China and play games with their money, not ours...
  • PeterCollier - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

What's the hype behind Japanese caps? Were they always good? Because in the 80s and 90s, there was a "ghost" or a Japanese capacitor plague that affected everything, including cars.
  • The_Assimilator - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

Pssst! It's no longer the 80s or 90s. Hasn't been for a few decades, in fact.
  • PeterCollier - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

That's why I asked "were they always [considered] good"? Or are the only people who think they're good the people who were born in the last few years?
  • CrystalCowboy - Thursday, May 14, 2020 - link

Wikipedia says the "Capacitor plague" lasted roughly 1999-2007. The brands most affected were Taiwanese. A botched formula stolen through industrial espionage was blamed. Following the plague, board and part manufacturers started paying more attention to cap quality.

Please do a review of some picoPSU units! Pick some cheap 200w ones from Amazon or eBay, and test them next to the gold standard, a HDPLEX picoPSU unit!
  • Samus - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

Overall this is a really impressive showing for something built from the ground up, and using Chinese capacitors.

My concern with those ripple measurements is, over time, component tolerances will deteriorate and ripple will increase. It's already halfway to the bare minimum spec on the 5v rail, possibly implying this thing will only be reliable for a few years. It's almost definitely undersized or lower quality caps causing the ripple, unless the filtering stages are inherently poorly designed.
  • wilsonkf - Wednesday, May 13, 2020 - link

This brand is well-known for mediocre quality and cutting corners in Mainland China, though priced very aggressively.
