Now that is a decent looking phone!
Hope you get a unit for review. Considering it's not SD 865, hopefully it'll be priced in the mid or mid-upper range.

Oh and an in-screen fingerprint and not on the side button!
  • imaheadcase - Tuesday, April 21, 2020 - link

Still both bad choices vs back.
  • Teckk - Tuesday, April 21, 2020 - link

Agree, but the phone does not visibly have that, so, no point.
  • PeachNCream - Tuesday, April 21, 2020 - link

No thanks. You'd have to cover part of the screen with tape. It's already enough of a pain to put stickers over all those stupid cameras and the place where they're sticking the current print sensor. The last thing f-ing Google needs is yet another way to cybeestalk people via Android.

You'd have to put those stickers on any phone these days, even iPhone.

Apple is less interested in hocking its users as products when compared to Google, but they make up for it by bending you over the counter at the store as you purchase your hardware at the "look at me, I have a fruity logo on my device" MSRP. Honestly, I'm not sure which company's rusty rebar I want jammed up my chute. Alphabet's lurking in the corner wanking it as it gathers every little scrap of data it can about me or Apple's horror movie butchering of my bank account. It's either that or live in an off-grid wooden shack where you cook moonshine for a bunch of your bearded hillbilly friends and poop into a barrel.

The new SE is pretty reasonable, especially when you factor in the longer term software support. But Apple absolutely robs you blind when you go high end, and buy into the rest of their ecosystem.

Going Google-less Android is possible, and not even too difficult or finicky thanks to LineageOS. But it is kinda a niche thing, and Android is worse about letting individual apps run wild in the background.

For at least 2 generations the real privacy invasion sensor has been naked (lensless) and under the center of the glass so you can't tell that it's a camera, and won't block it because that would make the phone unusable.

The colours are good, and I like the 'drop' cameras, but other than that it couldn't look any more generic.

Looks nice on paper, lets see how lg will screw it up with component choices and price.

Does LG have any phone with vanilla android without their skin on it?
  • PeachNCream - Tuesday, April 21, 2020 - link

Low end LG devices are pretty much stock Android. Some of them still have removable batteries (which oddly does not seem to adversely impact capacity or device thickness, but hey, we have to make up some kind of excuse to ensure your phone is disposable so you have to buy another one in two years.

Lol yeah, the thinness craze is senseless.
  • RollingCamel - Tuesday, April 28, 2020 - link

My Note 9 is way too thin to hold comfortably without the case. Maybe, that is the point so the cases wouldn't be too thick. My wife's P30 Pro feels fantastic in hand because it is thicker with large radius sides.

Yes, they released one, think it was 7X or something like that. Turned out to be about 50% more than the competition spec wise while pretty much only launching in Canada.

I really wanted this phone to wrapped in velvet. Would have been perfect for those relaxing evenings with my pipe and velvet smoking jacket while I kick back and kill some time on TikTok and Snapchat.

Guys, please proof-read your articles. I love your stuff, but the typos really make it a bit less pleasant to read. Thanks!

Regarding the phone though - really interested to see what LG has to show. They have everything in their hands to be one of the leaders in the smartphone industry, but they can't seem to find that special something. Really hope this rebranding sets them on the right path.

If it was smaller and had a flat screen, maybe I'd take a look at it.
  • Zagor Te Nay - Monday, May 4, 2020 - link

Good looks - especially rear camera which is less obtrusive than most other phones.

But, as LG G7 ThinQ user, I cannot get over poor software updates. Model I have (covers NZ, Australia, Hong Kong and China) hasn't got a single security update since July last year, when Android 9 was released on this phone. LG is promising Android 10 within next few months (Android 11 might be available by then but OK)... however, really, not a single security update in a year. How poor is that.

While I still like my phone from hardware side - still works fine, very reliable and stable, pretty much 0 issues within last 2 years - I'm finding it harder and harder to support LG for their support approach.
