Yes, totally agree on this one! The newly launched Macbook Air is 999$. Why would anyone choose this, if you want to buy an Apple product with a keyboard?
It is called iPad Pro but is it used for anything where people can term that it is "slow"? Won't people go with a MBP or iMac Pro or higher if they are doing anything that resource intensive? I just mentioned MBA as the keyboard will mostly be better than this? When the initial Surface keyboard attachments came out they had their limitations.
This product obviously appeals to someone looking to use it primarily as a tablet rather than as an ultrabook. As a tablet, this is best in class. As an ultrabook, not so much. It depends on what class of product you're looking for. These two classes of products are not interchangeable for me.
Agree! The big iPad pro is a great tablet for those with a lot of disposable income, who can either afford to also buy a notebookq or have no interest in one. Unfortunately, Microsoft has sort-of bungled their new Surface Pro, or it would beat the iPad Pro hands-down as a true 2-in-1. Fortunately for Apple, it's not as capable a tablet as the big iPad Pro.
Best in class..ok..considering tablets have just peaked in what you can do. Unless you got some very specific thing you need it for a samsung low end tablet will handle it.
Not everyone needs the keyboard. Macbook Air has lower display resolution, even the highest model which has a 1680x1050 display can't compare with the 2388x1688 panel in 11" iPad Pro nor the 2732x2048 panel in 12.9" iPad Pro.
AFAIK MacBook Air never had 1680x1050 resolution: since October 2018 it has 2560x1600 and before that it had 1440x900 for 13" model. So pixel density is quite close in recent models - 264 for iPad Pro and 227 for MacBook Air.
A pro tablet that can only have one users or one login at a time. The best tablet is a iPAd Air. Offers 95% of the featuires for a fraction of the price.
How about users who want that 5% (i would say it is much more than 5%, Touch ID alone is probably 5% and the 120Hz and USB-C is now a must for me), and don’t mind paying more, I use my iPad a lot and I definitely don’t mind, a few hundred over the span of 3-4 years of heavy usage is definitely okay for me. Why don’t you appreciate apple at least give you the choices. If you like the iPad Air more than the pro, BUY IT INSTEAD OF THE PRO! No one is forcing you to buy iPad Pro right?
Someone who wants a good tablet? There are lots of people who like to draw, take notes and do other graphical work. There are some great apps out there, which is more than can be said except for Windows (x86) tablets, but companies have sadly given up there.

"the technical definition of a LiDAR is a module that uses an illuminator (Most of the time, a laser, hence the name) and a scanning beam." Only a laymans definition of LIDAR would limit it to scanning-beam. Time-of-flight (phase based or absolute) is no less LIDAR than monopulse or SAR are RADAR. Detection And Ranging are occurring, so it's LIDAR.
"As far as the price of the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is concerned, the unit is going to cost $299 for the 11-inch model, $349 for the 12.9-inch model"
Never, ever, EVER, complain about the Surface Pro keyboards again... when the above exists!
Apple will probably be lauded for this innovation too. They are doing nothing ground breaking here or exciting. Just admiring that an only touch screen device above 10” isn’t all that compelling
OTOH 2-in-1 devices' cheaping out on the digitizer may not be immediately apparent, but SP and iPP are two of the three devices I came across in this weight class that provide near-flawless inking, certainly not the XPS 13 2-in-1 which doesn't try to sell you a separate keyboard.
after $999 monitor stand, this does not sound that awful. This is easy ways for Apple to get its fans to dispose their money. They will be selling fewer phones over next quarter or so bcos of COVID-19. I dont own any Apple products except their stock at this point and I hope millions of Apple fans buy this over priced keyboard :-)
These feels more like a stop gap interim update than a true generation product refresh. Let's hope for a true SoC update this fall with an A13x or A14x level chip.
I agree, first time ever we've seen an SoC rehash on the iPP series, but the lower price is a plus, and it's not another port short compared to the 2018. The added weight may suggest that the bendgate of the 2018 iPP has been addressed too.
wow, the top of the line 13" table w/ keyboard will retail for $1998 together.. yeah.. that's pricey... i mean it's priced 100% above what it should be ($999 would seem reasonable for the combo).
Well A12Z seems interesting. There was never a chip by Apple that was meant to be just an itterative polish on the same archichitecture. (Save for som die shrunk A5, but those were exactly thy same but smaller I think). They just keep churning more or less updated uArch every single year since 2012. Unlike other companies
A12Y would be a ear breaker but Z is still much worse than X. Why not keep the same name ? Does this means we will se multiple lineups ? iPhone iPad iBook ? Or is this just a one time apperance.
Is it 7nm+ ? Is it LPDDR5 ? Is it 6GB RAM base ? Just really interested in how this repackaged chip without any major overhauls performs, and if there are some efficiency gains like with a hypothetical A13X.
It shows that Apple only makes some of their SoC go with an X. Big generations like A7,A11,A13 probably took so much effort an X variant was not even thought about in the first place. But they could not just release it with an A12X right ?
A12X is in the last (2018) gen iPad Pro already. Without knowing and tech details, it sounds like the A12Z has the same CPU cores, but additional (or more advanced) GPU cores. And yes all of this year's have 6 GB of RAM.
It seems like apple built an 8 GPU core A12X but with 1 core disabled possibly due to 7nm still not mature enough to build such a large chip on, so when it get mature they enable it and call it the A12Z. So my guess will be those are the exact same die.
It pains me to see Apple continually release tablets with great aspect ratio, high refresh rate, quality build, blazing fast storage, and super high end SoCs while us Android users are left assed out. The best we can do is a Samsung tablet like the galaxy tab s5e I am typing this on or the galaxy tab s6. We are stuck with bloated Android implementations, bad aspect ratios, low refresh rate screens, and mid grade internals. It is infinitely frustrating. I wish OnePlus would step up to the plate and give us an Android tablet worth getting excited over.
No one really purchases Android tablets these days. I hardly see anything based on Android except for the occasional Kindle Fire. With a market so small for the hardware, no vendor is willing to go out on a limb and produce anything that goes up the price/performance stack.
He's smoking some good dope if his entry level price for a laptop is $1100. Then again, Anton is probably not familiar with USD versus his native currency so that might be semi-excusable. That comment slipping past an editorial review before puiblication though, that is less excusable.
Ok this is pretty disappointing. 2 years later, and we didn't even get an A13X. Same CPU, same high prices, and the keyboard price in particular is outrageous.
Apple update is just that! You did see they final went up to 6GB on the RAM from the 4GB. That what counts for speed and future proofing if the iPads. That is worth the $799 in it self compare to the 2018 iPad Pros. I still going to wait for the 5.4” iPhone 12. Hopefully, it be a “Pro”.
Apple's product, whether core or accessories, have always been pricey. Frankly speaking, a 300 bucks keyboard is still better in value than buying an Apple pencil which is ridiculously priced. Despite the hefty price tags, the accessories actually still sells very well among the affluent and frequent business traveler.
I feel Apple has gotten sloppy here. While the A12X has plenty of processing power to go around even now, The fact that this A12Z (whatever Z means) is going to be 2 generations behind the iPhone SOC does not make it an attractive product for people to upgrade. I also feel that the upgraded cameras on the iPad Pro is not going to be useful for most people. Its quite dumb to use it often since it is not a light device as compared to our mobile phones or even a proper bridge camera.
As a tablet Ipad has no competition(for some weird reason Android ecosystem is not even trying). But it would be a lousy laptop as it does not even support full multi tasking plus being limited to only install apps from appstore sounds like a horror.
I might pick up preview gen 11 pro if its available for sub $500. I think that is a matter of time as refurbished ones are already 549.
I got a iPad Pro from work. It is probably the most overpriced and useless Apple product I have ever had, and I have an Apple watch in my drawer! It is not a Pro device, the software is glitchy, with different apps having a different response to keyboard and touch. And this moring I tried to activate my free AppleTV subscription and had to add PayPal as my payment methid and it opened PayPal in German. Then it hung for a few minutes. Took me 3 attempts to do it.
I'm sad to see the state of comments approaching WCCF levels. (I don't have anything against that site otherwise. Especially Hassan writes very nice CPU articles.)
There will always be people who cannot imagine a tablet ever being called a pro device, let alone used for work. If you prefer a laptop that's fine. So do I. But there will also be people who prefer tablets either due to the ease of use of the OS, the touch-focused interface (think drawing and graphic design) or the smaller form factor (notice for example how the depth with keyboard is much shallower than laptops, meaning it is easier to use on trains and airplane tray tables). Apple is now moving iPad and laptops closer in every iteration. For me personally, I am starting to consider buying my first ever iPad. I'm glad to see Apple upped the RAM to 6 GiB across the board. It will also be very interesting to see how new apps become available that can use the LiDAR data. While ToF has been available in some Android devices, with Apple it has the potential to pick up necessary momentum to attract more developers and users.
This comment leads me to idea that it was smart move from Apple even number of bad comments here over uselessness and high price. Developers can start adopting new technology now before ..... If you follow news and rumors you would know that in 6-9 months time frame there will come new generation of iPad Pro probably with Mini LED displays, 5G and of course newer processor, A14 or A13 based and who knows what else besides same camera technology. Maybe more capable LiDAR. It will be powerful device. Apple for sure do not want to sell it for "low" price. So now you got updated machine with more bangs for same bucks. Question is what will happen to prices. Whether current Pro will stay where it is and new will be 200 or so more or whether current model be say 100 USD discounted.
I love me mechanical keyboard, my corsair mouse and my 30something screen in the office. But I can run my business entirely from my iPad Pro 10.5 and I have done so for weeks in the past. Also, I can write my books on it in scrivener, give presentations and so on. These are pro use cases and for me, having highly responsive and very fast and stable software is worth a lot of money. I have a macbook pro as well but nothing beats the speed of a capable iOS device like this. I have ordered this new iPad and I am pretty sure it will be worth the money. Again.
Apple got off on the 2018 iPad Pro's. The chips, fluidity of screen with refresh. I will admit the 2020 iPad is a bit of disappointment however their CPU's are still cutting edge and will be compared to droid. When Apple finally realizes the future for them making money is in pattern analysis from images they will smoke the competition.
