    "and two 10 GbE ports"
I wonder if these would do well on a small but capable (for home or small busines) NAS.

How much extra hardware does it need to implement 10Gb Ethernet?

You'll probably won't find any board with such an APU/CPU with 2 10Gbe or even a single 10 Gbe port. The design most of those vendors sell is based on Realtek and some i210 Intel 1Gb chips.

I really wish there was a board with such CPU's, but without 4 DP's, with ASpeed IPMI chip/port, and dual 10 Gbe ports.
  • romrunning - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

Methinks that is a typo - it's probably dual 1Gb ports.

The specification is clear. The goal here is perhaps to compete with the equivalent Xeon-D platform.
  • HStewart - Friday, February 28, 2020 - link

I serious doubt that - I think it more on Pentium level chips - even the Y series processor now have 4 cores - like the Amber Lake Y processor.

and you know this just by reading intels ark page ?? come on hstewart, we know your love for intel will always blind you.

Given the 10G support this is targeting Intel's domination of the NAS and Embedded firewall/network appliance. That would be the Celeron N series and possibly the C series. Not really enough cores to target the C series effectively (which goes up to 16 cores) except on the low end so it's probably targeted at the N series.

    Badass.
  • Tams80 - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

Nope, 10Gb. And as the article states that these are to last until 2030, you'd bloody well hope they'd include 10Gb ports.

What a conditioning tech industry done on us - we cannot believe anything remotely decent these days, like support for 10GbE standard, IEEE 802.3ae-2002 - yes, from the freaking 2002!
  • ksec - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

Sounds like a perfect fit for NAS. Synology and Qnap, are all having trouble getting enough CPUs from Intel. Hopefully this will be an opportunity for AMD.
  • James5mith - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

If the CPU cores are capable enough, sounds like a perfect SMB/SOHO style pfsense machine.

If it can run pfsense and inspect/route at 10GbE wire rate, then it's got a bright future ahead of it.
  • pugster - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

I personally would like to see them replace the crappy old Atom based Nas.

    Are these zen2 on 7nm ?
    Or just a cut down zen1 on 12/14nm ?
  • Shaggi72 - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

    zen 14nm
  • Operandi - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

What chip are these based on? Given the specs and power draw I'm going to guess Renoir?
  • Shaggi72 - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

    Dali
  • Operandi - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

Didn't even know that existed, thanks.

Also, this type of information should be in the original article.
  • Santoval - Thursday, February 27, 2020 - link

At first i thought Shaggi was jesting so I looked it up and no, Dali actually exists. It's also the very first time I hear of it.
  • neblogai - Friday, February 28, 2020 - link

It is a variation of Raven2/Banded Kestrel die. Same 14nm, but maybe a different revision of it.
  • Kaggy - Friday, February 28, 2020 - link

Would be nice if they made a product similar to Intel Compute Stick
  • HStewart - Friday, February 28, 2020 - link

I am not sure the packaging is smaller enough for handling of that kind of form factor, if you look at the Kontron images in the link in article, the size of the chip appears to be the same size of computer stick. Plus you need additional components like Ram and other circuitry
  • thomasg - Saturday, February 29, 2020 - link

It's of course not nearly as large as the Intel Compute Stick.

AMD appears to use their FP5 package, with is 25 x 35 mm

The Atom Compute Sticks use a 17 x 17 mm package.
    Intels "Core m5" Compute Sticks use a 16.5 x 20 mm package.

So the Ryzen Embedded uses up to 3 times the space.
The reason for this is all the extra contacts needed for features Intel doesn't have.

The following comparison is against the m5 as used in the Compute Stick, not the Atom, which has significantly fewer features:

ECC support requires 16 additional contacts
8 PCIe lanes instead of 4 is another 8 extra contacts
2 (3) displays instead of 1 (no extra contacts, but larger display engine)
More USB ports (Intel doesn't mention the actual number)
2 x SATA interface (Intel has none), 8 extra contacts
Many more interfaces: GPIOs, UARTs, ...

AMD offers only 1 package (FP5), so the lower end Embedded Ryzens use fewer contacts and could in theory be made smaller, probably in a similar sized package than the Core m5.
  • thomasg - Saturday, February 29, 2020 - link

To make it clear: The Compute Stick is about 5 times as large as the Ryzen FP5 package (38*114 mm vs. 25*35 mm).
  • myself248 - Friday, February 28, 2020 - link

Any chance these might someday be available in a Socket AM4 package? I'd love to build low-power desktops around these, as long as I had the option to upgrade the chip later as my needs change.
  • mode_13h - Saturday, February 29, 2020 - link

If you want an AM4 socketed version, just use a Ryzen 3 2200G and underclock it. It's basically the same thing.

You'll need the Pro version, if you want ECC memory. You can find those (used) on ebay, since AMD only sells them to OEMs.
  • mode_13h - Saturday, February 29, 2020 - link

Also, many boards' BIOS will let you disable cores.
  • mode_13h - Saturday, February 29, 2020 - link

Weird. There's apparently an unannounced Ryzen 3 Pro 2100GE with 2/4 cores/threads and Vega 3 graphics.

Let this be the basis for a gen 11 microserver that will pick things up where gen8 left (gen 10 is still making donuts during the race).
  • Namisecond - Saturday, April 4, 2020 - link

I think HP is going to kill off their ProLiant Microserver line.
  • mode_13h - Saturday, February 29, 2020 - link

BTW, I'm a little disappointed their embedded line is still on 14 nm, but maybe the can't or don't want to sign up for 10 year availability on 12 nm.

I didn't expect 7 nm, as they're still in the process of launching their mainstream APUs for it, and embedded always seems to trail mainstream (probably for the sake of cost reductions and the benefit of a few respins).

Would these work for tablets and cheap laptops?
  • mode_13h - Monday, March 2, 2020 - link

Walmart has a $270 laptop based on the equivalent Dali APUs.
  • oRAirwolf - Sunday, March 1, 2020 - link

I'm still waiting to see any motherboard with AMD 10gbe Ethernet. There have been plenty of other AMD CPUs in the server space that offer this feature, but the motherboards always end up shipping with Intel or aquantia 10gbe chipsets.
  • Qasar - Monday, March 2, 2020 - link

i dont think amd has their own networking chip, they use intel, realtech or others...
  • mode_13h - Monday, March 2, 2020 - link

Do AMD chipsets even *have* integrated Ethernet MACs?
  • svan1971 - Tuesday, March 3, 2020 - link

    Synology are you getting this?
