So Kirin 990 is significantly faster than Snapdragon 855?
  • cfenton - Monday, February 24, 2020 - link

Are they using the 5G version of the Kirin 990 for both the wifi and 5G versions? If so, is this a way to salvage chips that have a defect in the modem area? It just seems a bit odd to me that they are using the more expensive version of their SOC and then disabling its main feature for the wifi version.

Who are the markets for premium Android tablets?
  • Retycint - Monday, February 24, 2020 - link

Beats me. Literally everyone I know uses an iPad for notetaking, and in my 2 years of uni I have seen precisely 1 Android tablet being used in class. The iPad and its user experience is just so much better, not to mention a lower barrier of entry (cheapest iPad + Pencil is still cheaper than the base model of this and the Samsung tab S6)

true, but if you want a tablet with slim bezels and are ok with the apps available for this, it's only 2/3-the price of an ipad pro

Why would you compare devices with budget screens, like the iPad pro, to something with a proper display?

The market for Android tablets? People who want contrast on their devices.

US bubble. There's the 7.4 billion of rest of us...

How many of those 7.4B are looking to buy a $600+ tablet?

Outside USA, esp. Asia. Huawei has been mainly targeting China for it's premium tablets. They would also sell some in Europe, if they were widely available.

I'm in the market for a new 8" (Android) tablet to replace my Samsung Tab S2 because the battery is in its last days. Also, the sound quality is very poor. I like the 8" size for travel. Unfortunately, both Samsung and Huawei seem to be dropping the 8" size. If the Samsung's battery completely dies, I may have to repossess my old Nexus 7 from my daughter (who has gone all Apple).

I wish OnePlus would have a go at a tablet. I don't understand why Android tablet makers can't get them right. A 4:3 or 3:2 aspect ratio 90hz or 120hz Samsung AMOLED screen + ufs 3.0 storage + Snapdragon 865 + Oxygen OS would be so amazing. Pretty much all Android tablets force you to make a compromise right now. Apple is out of the question for me. Cheap Chinese manufacturers like Chuwi, Teclast, and Cube have terrible track record with OS updates, calibration, and power management. Xiaomi is decent but uses old and lackluster parts. Samsung comes the closest to making a good tablet, but the 16:10 aspect ratio sucks and so does their heavy, bloated Android implementation.

Help us OnePlus. You're our only hope.

Android tablet markets have been shrinking for many years now. Which is why a lot of manufacturers have stopped producing them. Those with deeper pockets like Samsung and Huawei are only semi-actively pursuing this market, i.e. don't refresh yearly, or using older hardware. Most people that buy Android tablets use them primarily to have a bigger screen to watch videos, or for kids to play games. Thus, most will not be willing to pay a lot for one. Which is why Xiaomi with their mid range specs, and budget price tends to be the best choice for most people. If we look at say the latest Samsung S6 tab, I don't think sales is rosy.
