    A buzzword.

Wonder when they'll call it an aipu.

MTK calls it APU. Qualcomm calls it AIE.

Exactly that. They want you to believe it's a Neural Processing Unit, but in reality it's nothing, except marketing.

It's not nothing, it is an optimized designed for specific types of calculations, which makes it faster at those specific things than a general purpose processor. By your idea, a GPU is nothing, as well.

It's far more than nothing. It's competition in the rapidly growing AI-lite pattern matching space. Intel and Google both have chips out at this point (google's chip is in the Pixel phones) and there are quite a few others. ARM's added extensions to support this hoping it will help them retain/gain marketshare as most phones do their AI on the CPU rather than a dedicated chip like the Pixel phones.

So, are we going to get arduino models with this processor and NPU?
  • eastcoast_pete - Tuesday, February 11, 2020 - link

That is a really good question! Does anyone know?

i expect SBCs with those IPs to be released in 3-6 months

In the case of Cortex-M vendors will publicly confirm whether they use the designs in their products because otherwise you can't program the microcontrollers.

Thanks Andrei! With Cortex M getting an all-new and improved version, any rumors on a successor to the A55? That's getting a bit long in tooth, and has fallen behind, for example, Apple's economy cores by a lot.

there is no official info as of yet
