When I was a kid, all computers were white (or close to it). lol

This is what happens when there are not enough companies making a wide variety of parts to choose from on the upper end. OEMs like ASUS end up being forced to sell on the color of paint applied to the parts and container as the primary "innovation."

I'm sure standards limit "innovation" as well. Round PCBs for everyone.

What kind of innovation do you want to see?
  • dullard - Tuesday, January 14, 2020 - link

How about the normal innovation for a system: the best combination of (a) the best cooling possible for all components, (b) lowest possible price, (c) easiest access, (d) most features, (e) greatest expandability, (f) smallest size, (g) lowest noise, (h) most rugged, etc. Now, these desires are sometimes mutually exclusive, so there can be a lot of different optimums for different user needs.

What I don't want is any more power sucking and heat generating lights (even if LEDs don't use too much power), that look like a rainbow unicorn farted over my walls, distracting me from my screen.

How about perfect cube systems, which have the most surface to volume ratio for dissipating heat?
  • dullard - Tuesday, January 14, 2020 - link

If we are talking about shapes with equal lengths on each edge, then even a tetrahedron beats a cube: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-area-to-volu...

But, if you don't need equal length sides, a long thin brick has a significantly higher surface area to volume ratio than a cube of equal volume.

Too many lines, hard to clean, especially if it is in white.

Yeah, won't be long before it turns to "dirty ice".
