HDMI is useful due to the lack of ports. Connect this to 2 screens via the two TB3 ports and charge using the other USB port and you have no USB ports left. So if the HDMI was 2.x you would at least have one free USB port.

HDMI might be the new "VGA port" for laptops going forward for connectivity in conference rooms. No need for 2.1 in those cases.
