I whitelist AT on my home computers. This site runs partly on ad revenue so although I hate the amount of advertising, it seems unfair to voice a negative opinion about content while also depriving the site of an income stream.
Not sure why imaheadcase thinks that's weirdness, but to each their own, I guess.
I am always shocked (unpleasantly) when I wander to Anand on a no-blocker browser. "WTF? this site is intolerable!" I pay for Ars Technica's "Ars Pro", and I'd pay for the same here if it were available. But I'm not putting up with all those ads.
We're not working on any such thing at this second, but like the rest of the ex-Purch properties, AnandTech will eventually get migrated over to Future's CMS.
Ok, cool. I'm glad to see your new corporate overlord is willing to spend on infrastructure beyond the ad selling platform. I hope it's customizable enough that you're able to keep the site's look and feel reasonably similar to the current version; just with a lot less technical debt.
Having written similar migrations in the past, I know they're loads of work to do well. I don't envy Future's IT staff in the least over this part of assimilating Purch.
Approximately similar here. I whitelist many sites I visit regularly and try it with AT every few months, but quickly switch back. It's just too annoying. If I could get rid of the videos and animations I'd put up with the rest, instead of cutting AT completely off "my" ad revenue.
When anand left it turned into a completely different site. Reviews slowed down, more commercial content that normal users aren't interested in, phone reviews, a press release mill.
"How about stopping with the press releases for products literally nobody cares about?"
It's good feedback to have. The only reason this was posted in the first place is because it's a bit of an off-beat product that we thought you guys might be interested in reading about. But if that's not the case, that's good to know.
This type of minor content is fine. There aren't big releases or new products being tested every day, and it's either stuff like this or start posting every little detail that leaks out as a news item like Tom's. We'd all prefer more in-depth investigations and investigative reporting, but anandtech clearly doesn't have that kind of budget.
I actually find it moderately interesting. I had a Toshiba laptop for quite a few years and it served me quite well even though it was a pretty budget device. This is actually a pretty decent looking laptop and pretty well spec'd - but it seems a bit pricey.
It really looks like an April Fools post. I mean really no one that I could think of, anywhere, in any country, would spend that kind of money for this.
It's interesting to see what other markets demand. Toshiba\Dynabook in Japan and Acer in France (and all of Europe for that matter) have always had fascinating market leadership with products that totally fail elsewhere.
Did we forget that standard Blu Rays are only 1080p? A UHD display would be pointless for displaying 1080p content.
As much as I like seeing a ODD in a laptop since I use them regularly, I can count the number of times I needed an ODD for my laptop specifically in the past 10 years on one hand. Combined with the fact that tray-loading ODDs on laptops always felt sort of cheap to me means I wouldn't see myself purchasing one of thesr any time soon. I could see the appeal as a light duty DTR for someone who uses a lot of Blu Rays, but that's such a niche market. It's nice to have the option though.
Because a 4k screen increases costs and also sucks battery life. If you're already spinning a DVD drive it's going to affect battery life, and then driving a 4k display would drop it even more.
I have an external optical drive that I've used for my Surface and my desktop as well as other people's computers. It's not something that I'd want built into any of my computers at this point, but I guess some people have the need.
That price... typical Japanese overpricing. The saddest part is there are people who will buy it.
At least the high prices are often somewhat worthwhile. Some of the Japanese laptops have ports up the wazoo and then you go and lift them up... and it's like they're made out of nothing.
I started reading the article and I thought "this seems like a nice, balanced laptop, not too mobile, but at home, for kids, it looks like an all-terrain, pity for the underpowered GPU". I had a chance to use a Dell Latitude 7400 with the i7 8565U, and I was quite impressed. I'm an "AMD fanboy", but the CPU is solid. Then I saw the price: for the love of God, who in the right mind would fork 2Kusd for this laptop, when even the latitude 7400 (which is a business laptop, comes with a larger SSD, has a fingerprint scanner) costs not even 1500?

Stopped giving Anandtech advert revenue when their adverts were distributing viruses/malware a few years back. And the fact that it's "Promotions" are US only anyway, so I have even less care to support the site.

"I'd pay for the same here if it were available."It's something I want to do. But it doesn't look like it'll be possible before we switch CMSes.

No kidding. I wouldn't spend much time on the Internet if it weren't for ad blockers. I pay for sites that I like, but it's never been an option here.imaheadcase - Friday, November 8, 2019 - link

But WHY!?WinterCharm - Friday, November 8, 2019 - link
Let me elaborate:Why bother with a Blu Ray drive on a computer where you're not even going to bother putting a HiDPI 4K display on it?
I could see the appeal if they went with a 4K OLED panel on this laptop, but this is... just sad. 1080p display, and it's almost 2020... lol.
