Two completely different products. For this money you can buy a lot of things and the bottom line on whether any of those things are worth the money is a complicated combination of objective and subjective. There's certainly no definitive answer.
yeah, Purch owned TomsHardware, AnandTech, TechRadar and MobileNations (windowscentral, crackberry, androidcentral, etc..) Now each of those sites displays Future as the publisher. They are the iHeartMedia (formelly Clear Channel) of the web....
I get the dream of a foldable fabric that displays a piano keyboard and then you play it in a venturi tube on the Enterprise and Picard gets laid.
But this makes me throw up in the mouth a little. Too big to be a nice phone, too small to be a nice iPad. 18 of these and you could have had a Tesla Model 3 instead.
> 18 of these and you could have had a Tesla Model 3 instead
I guess that's supposed to say something about the phone but in reality it doesn't. It just says what YOU value most in life. A cool car. Others would say "I'll put myself through college", or "down payment on my house". But on this scale the Tesla is closer to a thick gold chain. How many of these phones do you think you'd need for that?
I think I'd rather spend <$30 on a refurb from TracFone and then toss the remaining $2,044 into a mutual fund or retirement account where it can compound for decades. Assuming you also go with the cheapest pre-paid service TracFone offers which boils down to $80 a year (vs $50 for a mainstream carrier's service - an underestimate, I admit) and you upgrade your phone once every other year, then you would be investing $1,542 annually. Do that starting at age 25 until you retire at age 65 and get a sub-par 5% interest rate back on your investments and you'll have $193,000 more money to your name just by not being dumb with your phone service. Use that same logic on GPUs and CPUs and then rake in a little buying cheaper games, cut your cable/satellite/streaming TV services and you can retire with a million more than you would have had otherwise. Then again, I can't make interest off everyone else's poorly thought out buying impulses by holding stock so please, by all means, keep spending like there isn't a tomorrow to think about. I'll ride on your proverbial backs.
Well, it is sold out in China quickly. Even people as rich as billionair Wang SiChong, son of the boss of Wanda Group, is asking for help to get hands on these things via his Weibo. Don't think it will be available in other market any time soon. I wasn't quick enough to order one myself, so I get a Mate 30 Pro 5G for ~$1100 USD, and I'm happy with that.

Yeah, and there are people who scream that an 18-core HEDT CPU that costs less than half of this joke is a "ripoff".close - Wednesday, October 23, 2019 - link

Did Purch sell this website? I just noticed the Future logo at the bottom and that the video that blocks 3/4 of the screen on my phone is gone.Tams80 - Wednesday, October 23, 2019 - link
It would appear it's just Future eventually getting around to removing remnants of Purch branding and consolidating.https://www.anandtech.com/show/13092/future-plc-to...

The folding part of the screen that is also facing outwards spells bad news.Azethoth - Wednesday, October 23, 2019 - link

I get the feeling that the majority of these Gen1 foldable phones are bought by YouTubers and paid for by their viewers.PeachNCream - Thursday, October 24, 2019 - link
