I don't know man... Platform seems pretty dead to me. Even after the price drops, I am pretty certain people looking into this platform either a) already got screwed over by buying the boards and cpus already available to the platform, or b) are looking at other solutions.
Which platform are you refering to as dead? Ive got a X299 Pro Carbon AC, and my son has a X299 SLI Plus. Ill be able to upgrade these pc's for years and still keep up. And with the new Cascade lake, I'm pretty happy about that. So far I with the Pro Carbon, I have 64 GB DDR overclocked at 4000mhz, only an i7-7800x for now, 2 M.2 drives at 4300mbs on NVME, 5 1TB WD Blues raided for back up, 2 RX 580 Gaming X 8GB, 2 MSI Optix 32" curved monitors at 165Hz and 1ms, and no where near what this thing can be upgraded to and handle. Ive also only spent about ($1000) on the whole thing not including monitors. If you are looking for a very good long term computer to invest in, X299 and X399 are the way to go.
No mention of the knob by the LED display in the upper right corner of the board? Nothing on MSI's website, either, till I dug into the manual. Something called a Game Boost Knob. Apparently a shortcut to activate overclocking features (also controlled via BIOS) with up to 7 presets.
Our own Dr Ian Cutress actually gave MSI this idea :) - It has been such a common feature on MSI boards for generations, a dial up to 11 in a reference to Spinal Tap!
Yea its a manual game boost knob. you can also do it in the bios and through the MSI command center, to be honest I never use it. No need to really, why get down on the floor take the case panel off to reach it when I can just do it from command center.
