My complaint is with the looks...If only it looked normal, especially that vent in the back, if blocking it wouldn't overheat the device (and if a case would be available to cover the entire back except cameras) it would be very tempting.
I'll second this. Phones have pursued the thinness fad a bit too much and sacrificed far to much over the years.
This is also probably the only phone device where a USB Type-A port would make sense. Still it would have been nice to see a second USB-C
I would still wonder about battery life of this device under load as it targeted at high power usage scenarios (vs. the more burst scenarios at peak performance). Though with that larger battery, it'd require some mismanaged firmware/software for it be really bad.
since you have to buy a case with most of these thin and delicate phones, i never even look at their physical dimensions. If they made them sturdier than there'd be no need for a case, but the thinner they get the more delicate they are.
Glas is the thing that is breakable on the phones and unless you make an ugly blob of plastic or something similar, you will always need a case to protect the front glas display from breaking.
Front screen can be covered with tempered glass screen protector. That's why I hate curved display phone, it's so hard to protect the screen without being bulky. With tempered glass screen protector, you can put slim case without fear from breaking.
I’m not convinced this is necessarily true. There is no reason the touch/hold state machine needs to wait to produce an output. It is true if the interface only produces “tap” and “hold” events and doesn’t provide access to anything else. Sometimes applications don’t care if it’s a tap or a hold and just want the info as it comes (twitch games).
unlike iOS, Android keeps each "sleeping app" fully in RAM. Meaning each app needs all it's ram. The more RAM you have, the less times Android needs to dump/clear older running apps.
iOS does a bit differently, in that once RAM space gets too full, it begins unloading unnecessary stuff from RAM, while keeping the core of the APP alive. It'll start unloading stuff like textures in a game, but will remember your place in said game. It resumes faster than launching the app again.
So in that regard, more RAM in Android means less apps are unloaded, means quicker multi-tasking.
Except the reality of having an Android device with tons of RAM is that background apps get unloaded anyway and you perpetually have half of your RAM unutilized. I went from a 6GB device to an 8GB one and neither ever uses more than about 4.5GB.
Except you can't use it as normal notification bar. With dual sim card, bluetooth, connection speed, alarm, VoLTE, plus bunch of other notification app, you can easily fill up the notification bar.
Well, bloatware and adware collectors arent really a majority. I see what you describe on my fathers phone all the time, because he installs so much crap, its unbelievable.
Not saying this is the case but, operating at lower temperatures lowers power consumption, the chip runs more efficiently. Again, not saying this is why, but it's the first thing that popped into my head.
The first thing that popped into my head was "plastic has low thermal conductivity". Certainly an interesting choice for a performance oriented device. I don't want to say this thing is incompetently designed because all I've seen is their marketing material, but it doesn't give a good feeling at a glance. https://www.anandtech.com/show/7984/discussion-on-...
They claim less throttling then the competition, not saying you are wrong, but it would seem... odd to offer a cooling accessory while touting its resistance to throttling.
look at that, apparently ASUS truly is dropping the ball the last while huh?
LOL
.........
Beyond that, this is a proper high end phone spec IMO most importantly is not yet another AAA release using just enough battery life to check a few texts etc (6,000Mah is not massive, but, compared to 95% of the "high end" that seem to use battery size meant for those 5% models (under 4k at this point is stupid, battery are the last thing they should be saving a few pennies on)
also, no reason AT ALL for all makers to not at least have some offerings that have 3.5mm earjack (not the combined ones that are charger AND .. hate those)
I think reviewers should make it a big deal So other manufacturers should also care about the things together phone has included I'm really happy about how asus is progressing in phone market
Thanks Andrei! Question: In addition to more RAM, has ASUS given any information on the speed of the memory bus? I suspect that the graphics performance of these high-end Adrenos (and other high-end mobile graphics units) is starting to be limited by memory speed. Any comments are appreciated!
I'm mainly interested in the docking capabilities. The phone itself is nice, but the PC replacement abilities that can be gained from an effective docking station for access to common computer interface devices and a larger monitor are the sorts of things that I want to see more widely available.
Wow! Imagine how many micro transactions per second this thing can pull. But seriously gaming on adroid phones isnt a thing as about 99% of the games are toxic money grabs.
I do a lot more gaming on my phone than I do on a PC or console. There are certainly a fair number of micro transaction-supported games out there and a much larger number of ad-supported games as well, but knowing that, I generally stick to titles that are paid for once and have no in-game purchases or advertising. After all, without paying for a gaming PC, I can redistribute a comparably huge amount of entertainment budget at phone games, still come out ahead in the money department, and my games can easily come along with me as I go places.
Oh sure! I have the Stellaren series, Space Traders Elite, Space Trader (the palm os port), Random Adventure Roguelike, Kittens Game, and NEO Scavenger installed on my phone at the moment. I have a couple of emulators for the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance.
I go the same route, I've had a pretty big collection but haven't had much time to play recently... Republique, Sky Force Reloaded(completely playable w/o IAP) Banner Saga, Zen Bound, XCOM, Death Road to Canada, etc.
I'd still be much more interested in using a device like this for mobile VR than real gaming: I don't game a lot anyway and if I do I have a place to sit down and much more GPU power than you can fit into a handset today.
But it's typical: Just as a prematurely hyped feature gets into range in terms of actual hardware capabilities, it's abandoned because prematurity resulted in massive disappointments.
So let's hope the docks are really good and functional and support convincing desktop modes with proper DPI management and that the combinations isn't the price of two ultrabooks.
Asus, in case you need reminding: I really only want to pay once for mobile and desktop functionalities; that's called real progress.
Of course rooting and custom ROMs are a must for a very personal computer.
It's not great, I'll admit, I've used it for years on my Oculus DK2 which has a Samsung Note 3 display inside. But if you're sucked into the VR or game, it doesn't really matter all that much any more. If you're using it as a desktop replacement, it won't be so much fun. I have a 3k IPS (LeEco Le Max 2) panel for that and it's visually not too bad and with the LeVR headset/holder device it's quite comfortable. Great for watching 3D movies lying on the sofa or bed (or transcontinental airplane).
I'm managing 'OK' with 1080p on a 17.3" screen, but yes I'd like more... I wouldn't say it was 'terrible', I'd save that for 720p or something like that....
I hope this year's version actually connects to the LTE network here in the USA. My wife and I had last year's Asus ROG phone, and it was great at every thing but being an actual phone. Would not connect on T-Mobiles 4g LTE network. Worked with T-Mobile tech support both in store and over the phone, they said it was a firmware issue with the phone. Called Asus tech support they said it was a known issue and they had no plans to fix it. So we returned the phones.
It's a bit immature, but they've toned it down here. If you're losing your partner because of the name of smartphone, then perhaps they weren't meant for you.
Agreed. The girlfriend was clearly looking for someone with a small amount of maturity and had come to the realization that she would not find it in someone that owned a squinty-eyed Republic of Gamers branded phone.
Specs look nice but as expensive as it will be, it needs a removable battery. I had a Zenfone for a little over year and the battery started bulging and pushed off the back, glued on cover. If it wasn't able to do that, it would have probably exploded. I know companies do it to force you to eventually upgrade, but it's a lot of electronic waste we don't need to be doing as it can be reused for other purposes when something better comes along. Hopefully companies eventually look to reintroduce removable batteries on higher end devices because after that close call, I'm sticking with the phones with removable batteries. Imagine how much both Samsung and Apple would have been able to save on their battery debacles if they had removable batteries.
That ship has sailed. I'm sure removable batteries will come back. Probably through companies being forced to by greater powers; I'd put my bets on it being lead by the EU.
I am in China, and by your comments it has launched here. Whilst I'm struggling to get any time off just now, I was hope to head out shopping this weekend.
As long as its not priced like a 'fold', I'll take it.
I've been waiting patiently since the sale of my HTC M7 for dual front facing speakers again. (makes for an excellent speakerphone in rental cars)
And the only phone I've broken a screen on, is my S8+, so no curved screen is wonderful.
I won't be gaming on this (oddly I deleted my phone games just yesterday for being sh1te), but I want that dual 4G sim capability and that massive battery.
That massive MP camera won't hurt either, neither will 30W charging.
I'll report back this weekend (hopefully).
And if Samsung weren't so unreasonable (cost wise) with the screen repair, I might not have changed. And that should be my first & last curved screen phone too.
Yeah, RAM is overkill but 128GB storage isn't enough. It'll be worse when I start storing 48MP DNGs. The premium over the base tier is crazy, I don't think buying a mid-tier Note 10 would cost that much since Samsung's street prices fluctuate and usually only takes 3 months to drop 20-30% for some SK or HK version.
Would be great to see a review on the GPS performance and call quality performance as well. I do believe that in Asia they come with dual sim capability as well. Does the include the new GP features as well for more accuracy? Is the GOS more accurate here and is wifi and cell reception strong or weak? These are important in a smartphone to be tested.
