On paper better camera? Since when does 'on paper' matter with cameras? It is mostly software these days, not sensor quality that results in a better image. I would bet this does NOT have a better camera than the Pixel 3a.
On paper = "the specs look good but we haven't had the opportunity to test it yet"
Sensor quality always matters. Software can be fixed with an update or by just getting a different/better camera app. But hardware is baked in and can't be improved after its made.
Agreed. You get a 5000 mAh battery, a wide angle camera, stereo speakers, expandable storage, 2GB more RAM and a Snapdragon 855. Unless you are really into Moto Mods there is no reason why this phone should cost $500.
I didn't bother to check this, but I'm guessing the Moto is thinner and has more brand power.
I'm a little confused about the whole "stereo speakers" thing... If you're having 2 speakers anyway, why not just have them both in "earpiece style", facing the front? Then you can play Stadia, emulators, YouTube videos, etc. In stereo, no headphones..
Because that makes it harder for the front to be a single pane of glass with 99.9% active display area. Form trumps function, so speakers don't go on the front. As soon as they figure out how to take the earpiece speaker off the front(sidetalkin' returns!), it is gone too.
I'd argue that phones that cost more than $500 are quickly becoming anomalies. People are getting sick of paying what they'd pay for a notebook every 2-3 years.
Although for the price different I would have gone for a better SoC, it's not that high a percentage of the BoM.
Are you seriously saying it's a bad thing that their top-end phone is priced sensibly? With current flagship prices, good performers in this price category are going to sell like hotcakes, even if they don't have an ultra-high-end flagship to lean on for brand recognition.
The part that involves Snapdragon 675 is no so bad considering it still uses a couple of modified A76 cores as the flagship Snapdragon 8xx SoCs. Frankly, Qualcomm has done well in dupping people into thinking that 600s is a mid-range brand. In reality, when they had no good midrange SoC, they used those crappy A53 cores in the 600 series which were barely better than 400 series, and now SoC like 670 or 675 is basically an excuse to sell you a very good CPU but with a steep discount.
Moto/Lenovo has long been a go-to brand for budget priced phones thanks to their popular G-series. X was going in that direction too. The price of 500 is a bit too optimistic though considering Pixel 3A is a 400 dollar phone and still has a great camera.
Why not? You can get Snapdragon 845 for less. Galaxy S9 for 500 EUR or less, not to mention Mi 9 128gb for 450 EUR, etc. Pocophone even further lowers the price with its F1 and F2 / Pro (Redmi fagship).
"CPU's pretty irrelevant in my consideration of a phone and my use of a phone."
I guess that means that phones aren't used much as phones??? Toward the end of "Usual Suspects" Verbal says (more or less), "The Devil's best trick was to convince people he didn't exist." Back in the olde days, your Grandpa had his Kodak Brownie. Not as costly, and also wasn't used to call home.
The only worthwhile feature on the 3a xl is the camera, everything else is average at best. This phone should be 399 no more, look how cheap the zenfone 6 is.
Does the CPU matter much if your don't play games? I recently bought a Redmi Note7 with SD660 for €210, and that is already more than I needed. And camera is crazy good too, as GCam on this phone can be sideloaded without any modification to the phone- and it does wonders on isocell 48MP.
I know it's crazy, but apparently some people don't have or don't want to use Bluetooth headphones. I say consumers don't even know what they want. Take away their choice in the name of progress!
Eh? Why not. Proper phone setup has all your music and entertainment support, and there aren't better listening devices out there at any price than IEMs. Most of the cases where you will be listening, you'll also want sound isolation, which nothings else does as well as IEMs.
Why not? Why deny yourself the best possible sound quality, even when using a phone? Moreover, BT is plagued with a million of basic usability and reliability issues.
Using LDAC enabled BT headphones can actually give you better quality than plugging headphones direct into the phone (assuming it has a socket that lets you do that). Using something like a FiiO BTR3 or a Radsone ES100 can give you top quality sound via wired headphones with a phone with no socket.
Sometimes, and then you still have the terrible latency and yet another battery to concern yourself with. External DACs are great and all, but a real pain in the arse to carry around. There are a significant number of people who have decent headphones/IEMs, but don't want to lug around an external DAC.
Obviously you've never heard of high end headphones. Look up Campfire Andromeda for instance. Or folks using CIEMs. Some people like sound quality, and no hassle of having to charge yet another device. It's not like you don't have your phone isn't already portable.
It seems like you're not heavy headphones user if you think that BT wireless cans are an equivalent replacement. There is tons of many negatives about BT hardware and its implementation that easily negate the fact you no longer need a wire.
It is a beautiful phone, I would go as far as to say stunning. Better single thread performance than the Z3 and pushing the mods another generation. I dont think people who used prior generations for gaming purposes would be happy with this though, since it has half the memory bandwidth and I bet the Adreno 540 would still beat the 612 even with the same bandwidth. For non gamers though gorgeous phone!
Motorola is much better than they were 2-3 years ago. Quarterly security updates. 1 major OS update on midrange G series, 2 Major OS updates on Z series
I have a Moto G5+ 4GB/64GB as my secondary phone. Having experienced their "much better", I'm not impressed, even though that phone's hardware itself is decent, and priced much better.
Timelines for getting a new OS are lousy. If you're lucky, security updates are every two months, if not they're every quarter. In comparison, with a Pixel 3A/3AXL, you'll get those security updates monthly, and the OS updates nearly at release, for as long as their guarantee goes.
A Pixel 3A is $400, specs are fairly similar, and there's no real trade-offs. I think the Z4, other than the headphone jack, really isn't worth the $100 price premium. The last time I really loved Moto was when Google owned them; selling them is still one of Google's greatest missteps, IMHO.
I should also add that in comparison, I have a Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE Windows Phone. It only went to Windows 10 1709 for ARM, and support will end later this year, but in the meantime (and since Windows 10 release) -It has gotten a cumulative update every single month.
That is honestly a better track record than I've had with Motorola pre-Google and post-Google ownership.
Yeah, I'm with LoneWolf on this one. Moto might be better at updates then most OEMs, but that's damning with faint praise. When my Nexus 5X bootlooped a second time I replaced it with a Moto G6. The Moto still doesn't have Pie (Pie launched August 6, 2018, it's been ten months), and the quarterly security updates make me nervous in this age of zero-day exploits.
It'll be getting replaced with a Pixel 3a soon. Day one security updates for three years and three version upgrades. That's just basic software support IMHO.
Lol I wasnt praising Motorola I just said they were much better than they were 2-3 years ago. I also have a secondary unlocked Moto G5 + 4/64 that I bought at launch. The first 9 months i didnt recieve any updates period. The second year was much better with quarterly security updates and the promised update to Oreo. I wasnt impressed either but it was still "much better" 😂
Same as. Not because I dislike BT, I just dislike having my choices taken away. And sometimes I want to rock my Sennheisers which aren't BT. So a jack is the best solution (for me).
Any word on who's making the AMOLED panel? It seems like there are large quality swings with AMOLED. Some are great, and others have problems with off-axis viewing and color reproduction (though this later problem could also be caused by poor calibration).
And the endless march towards mediocrity continues for the Moto line. "48MP camera" is all that needs to be said on how much Lenovo has lost the plot. Cameras have always been Motorola's greatest weakness, and turning the sensor up to ridiculous-megapixels is not the solution nor will anyone fall for it (it's not 2014 anymore).
"means that the company is aware that this is indeed a better solution for user experience than having no headphone jack. I think in general Motorola here needs to be applauded for the decision. The move points out that the industry’s removal of headphone jacks has indeed been stupid, and there’s real consumer need and demand for it, otherwise they wouldn’t have brought it back."
Get real, most people have moved on from the headphone jack and none miss it. You prob the same silly person who complain about notch as well, yet no one who actually uses a phone with one daily even cared. Just like headphone jack.
Care to post any statistics with your comment? And why does having the choice of a 3.5mm jack seem to offend you so much? :O I use my 3.5mm jack basically every day :(
I use the 1/8" jack regularly for plugging my pocket computer into my home stereo as well as my car stereo. I only started using bluetooth headphones because I'm a bad judge of cable length and pulled my pocket computer off the table more than once.
In fact, I had two ironclad requirements for the device I bought a few months ago to replace one with a broken screen: It must have a headphone jack, and it must not have holes in the screen. So you might be right that people who use phones with notches and no headphone jacks don't care. Because people that DO care buy systems that don't have those form-over-function design compromises.
None miss it? You need to interact outside of the millennial crowd. I had nothing but trouble with BT earbuds. Their negatives easily outweigh lack of wire.
Now look at all the devices that are now coming back with the 3.5mm connector.
Huawei Mediapad M6 Pixel 3A/XL Samsung Galaxy A50, and now the Moto X series.
People shopping for a budget-priced phone are looking for a real solid hard performance and features to price ratio, and erasing a headphone jack will not increase the value of the phone, no matter what Apple, OnePlus, or Google is going to tell you.
And when you look at the price performance of BT cans to a good wired headphones, the BT devices lose big time. My 40 Koss PortaPro cans or 60 dollar Sennheiser PX100 have better sound quality than devices that cost twice more, never run out of battery charge, never suffer from weaking battery, and I never need to go up to the second floor to unsync the headphones from a laptop in order to have it now plugged into a smartphone. Compare to the flimsy construction of wireless cans. Even those costing well over 100 bucks feature cheap flimsy construction, and you'll be lucky if they last a year of heavy use.
Was there any mention of possible future Z4 phones like a Z4 Force? They didn't do a Force model for the Z3 series so the Z2 Force is currently the most recent shatterproof one available.
What kind of expression is "newer IP?" It is more refined regardless of "intellectual property." Claims around IP have a giant distorting effect on the mobile market, and it is strange to see a "technical" blog using the phrase.
Although I do like their idea of attaching stuff to the phone, it would be better if they just made a "Pro" version with extended battery, dual stereo speakers and wireless charging. Should be waterproof. And no notch.
The specs are comparable, but I have to tell you that Samsung A50 for under $300 is a grey-market import of the Latin American version which questionable warranty or support in the USA. When it's launched in US, the MSRP will be 350.
In 2019 we found some really cool and unexpected gadgets and web features announcements just like this one, now it's pretty clear that many tech companies looking forward for what people need. Yahoo recently launch a great feature called live chat where people can find out easy help for their email trouble, in order to know more about live chat.

They didn't do a Force model for the Z3 series so the Z2 Force is currently the most recent shatterproof one available.rocketman122 - Friday, May 31, 2019 - link

What kind of expression is "newer IP?" It is more refined regardless of "intellectual property." Claims around IP have a giant distorting effect on the mobile market, and it is strange to see a "technical" blog using the phrase.yacoub35 - Sunday, June 2, 2019 - link
Looks like a good phone for $299.flyingpants265 - Sunday, June 2, 2019 - link
Flagship with a notch... From Motorola.. Ok, no..Although I do like their idea of attaching stuff to the phone, it would be better if they just made a "Pro" version with extended battery, dual stereo speakers and wireless charging. Should be waterproof. And no notch.

Is it only me or the specs are VERY similar to Samsung A50 that costs less than $300?UtilityMax - Monday, June 24, 2019 - link
The specs are comparable, but I have to tell you that Samsung A50 for under $300 is a grey-market import of the Latin American version which questionable warranty or support in the USA. When it's launched in US, the MSRP will be 350.geeksinfo - Monday, June 3, 2019 - link
