Is the DRAM cache really 512 MB in all capacities? If that's the case it is very weird. Isn't it customary to employ 1 GB of DRAM for each 1 TB of NAND?
Looks awesome, just need the full Anandtech review to see whether it will decisively beat down a 970 Evo. At the very least, that massive heatsink will ensure you'd never have to think about thermal throttling.
I have Gigabyte's Phison E12 drive on the testbed now. It has a similarly large heatsink, though it may not be quite as effective since GB threw in RGB LEDs while Patriot's heatsink looks like it's more serious about cooling ability.
Flash your drive to 12.2 firmware ... it reduces temps. You can find the link the firmware tool on HardOCP forums. Do a search for Phison E12 controller.
You surely meant 11W of peak power: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13955/the-silicon-p... Considering the small space of the packages, yep, that definitely needs a heatsink, just as every CPU or SoC with such a power draw needs some kind of heatsink at the very least.
That 10.73W is merely what the drive claims its peak power consumption to be. In practice, the most I've measured from a consumer M.2 drive is about 6W.
For what it's worth, my Quarch power meter internally samples at 4µs intervals but is usually configured to average in batches of 32k samples to reduce the volume of data. But even with ~1/8th second averaging, that's still quite a bit quicker than the seconds or minutes it takes NVMe SSDs to reach thermal throttling temperatures when subjected to unrealistic torture tests. Any power spikes in excess of the <6W sustained that I've measured were far too short-lived to have relevance to cooling needs.
(And an M.2 drive that actually does exceed 10W is pretty likely to run into problematic voltage drop in the real world, since it's being fed at 3.3V nominal, and 3+A is a lot to push over a handful of pins on an M.2 connector. This is generally much more likely to cause trouble than overheating.)
This drive is over-priced, no seriously, it is. The Inland Premium 1TB NVMe is the same exact drive from the same exact Taiwanese Factory using the Phison E12 controller. And it's only $134.99. Microcenter has them in stock. I've bought several already. It does not need a heatsink. The recent 12.2 firmware actually reduced temps down into high 50's C from the initial 70's C some of these drives were seeing. There are several of the OEM drives coming to market now under different names. This drive is within 1% of the Samsung 970 Pro and Samsung 970 EVO Plus. There is also a huge thread on Phison E12 controller SSD's on HardOCP Forums.
HardOCP is difficult to read at times due to a small, but vocally political group of people there. When I just want to read about and discuss technology, its a bit discouraging to have to scroll through lots of American politics BS.
First of all, don't thread crap. If you have a personal agenda and vendetta with someone you really need to keep that private. It does not belong here. Secondly, I've been on those forums for 21 years. They do not allow political discussions let alone off top discussions. So I am not sure why you would come on here, again, off topic and lie. You're doing all of us, this community a disservice. The very thing you're attempting to complain about, you, yourself are engaging in.
I don't know what's going on, I haven't followed HardForums, but other people have complained about the hostility over there. It may not be widespread or intended even, but it seems not everybody is comfortable with that atmosphere.
Here are the facts: he was just trying to offer some technical information about the SSD, it was you who randomly started attacking the forums where this was discussed. There was no reason to bring that up.
I found the Patriot VPN100 1TB on NewEgg for $150. I couldn't find the Inland Premium 1TB NVME on NewEgg, but I found it for a few different prices on Amazon, ranging from $128.99 to $200.
I am definitely looking forward to a full review of this drive and possibly some of the other cheaper drives that use the Phison PS5012-E12 controller.
Did Patriot just buy ad space looking like a product announcement article on AnandTech? This entire text reads like it was written by the Patriot marketing department. I have gotten used to some copy and paste from the press releases, but this is on a different level entirely, or so it seems to me.
im not sure if adding the sentence "Currently the drives write endurance is unclear." would just bloat the article or not. a quick search of all the articles about this drive and the whole first page doesnt really have any additional info.
@ billy how come we are increasingly seeing incomplete specifications from THIS site. A query for TCG-opal/SED, & no mention of endurance whatsoever. I have been following anandtech since 2000, and it is disappointing that it simply publishes the press release. a suggestion: if you do simply publish a press release add a small disclaimer, that no editorial additions were done.

Thank God we finally get a heatsink to help dissipate that horrendous 4-5W of peak power!UpSpin - Sunday, March 31, 2019 - link

Prices for 2TB SSDs aren't so absurd any more - and this one is fast. Hope to see more like this.TomKansasCity - Saturday, March 30, 2019 - link

Inland Premium 1TB (https://www.microcenter.com/product/600422/1tb-3d-...3.1/1.9 GBps Read/Write
Patriot Viper VPN100 (https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/20c502_1b35fbb645d9...
3.45/3.0 GBps Read/Write
That could justify the price difference...
What's your opinion in the specs?
