Frame TV's a locked down pay to play ecosystem or can you use your own files?

Are the 8K TV's confirmed to have HDMI 2.1 input for actual 8K content? Or are they all upscaled 4k?
  • DigitalFreak - Wednesday, February 13, 2019 - link

I haven't found anything specifically saying HDMI 2.1, but the manual does list 7680 x 4320, 60hz, 10-bit, YCbCr 4:2:0 as an input option.

Not to mention VRR in the form of FreeSync support. I'll have to check the manual to see if they also support 4K120.

Yes, they have HDMI 2.1. However, it seems they can claim HDMI 2.1 w/o supporting everything that the 2.1 standard allows.

All the mfgs are hedging their bets as cables/8k media standards aren't quite there yet. While there are some 8K videos on YT and the like, there is no guarantee from the mfgs that their 8K TV will play them.

Related to the original question - yes, the 8K TVs could play 8K (7680×4320) content if they support the 8K video type/encoding of the source.

4K content can/will be upscaled to 8K. Samsung promotes their Q900's "AI" for upscaling support.

Only because it's cool to put an "AI" label on anything. This one might as well "learn" to do nearest-neighbor all the time for all we know. One thing's for sure, there no AI in any acceptable definition of it.

And related to the resolution and inputs, first 4K TVs actually only accepted 4K from sources like Netflix or USB, not HDMI. Based on the "draft" implementation of 8K this could be the case again.

8K30 YCbCr 4:2:0 by HDMI 2.0, 8K60 only by USB.

That 43" Q60 might be my next monitor if it has a 120hz panel and HDMI 2.1

Didn't Sony have quantum dots in their TriLuminos television since at least 2013 or 14? I remember my last 1080p TV being triluminos and now its the hottest hot in 2019. CoolAid much?
  • Lord of the Bored - Thursday, February 14, 2019 - link

    What is CoolAid?
  • cpkennit83 - Monday, February 18, 2019 - link

No. Trilumons has nothing to do with qdots. Samsung, hisense and TCL have been the major pushers of qled technology. Triluminos is only enhanced gamut through the use of dedicated leds for each color channel.

I chose which model to buy and then I found a site with a good price and quality.
QLED is one of the coolest model of the TV! I am really happy)
