Customers probably didn't know that ECC unbuffered SODIMMs exist...

sodimms are significantly more expensive. Newegg prices for DDR4 ECC start at $100 for 8gb and $200 for 16gb in Sodimmm's. Full size equivalents are $60/100.

And more importantly, these are for customers who are doing heavily compute limited work and don't need to max out all the channels for bandwidth, never mind stick multiple dimms on each channel for peak capacity.

According to Supermicro website - these are typically 8 dimm systems and normal systems have 12 dimm - I would think that a lot of this less space on motherboard also .. But systems have the same Chip C621 so 4 channel memory must be supported.

To me this shows flexibility in Intel Scalable Xeon systems.

Even the first dual channel Athlons had mainboards with just 1 SDR/DDR channel. So yes, you're right. But that's not exactly a highlight feature.
