  This is not the first of those, I am guessing xenoforo 1.5 went out of support?

  I couldn't find a planned EOL date for 1.5; but it was last updated in September (concurrent with a 2.0 update).
  
  2.0 is a year old, so what I assume you're seeing is that it's been around long enough that more administrators are feeling comfortable with upgrading to a newer major version.

  Lots of forums I am on have also recently jumped, Xenforo 2 is pretty much stable and seems to reduce load times substantially compared to the 1.5 and vbulletin.

  Editing posts dates back to BBSs in the 1980s.

  The comment system is completely independent of the forums (down to being a separate login), so no direct impact.
